Excellent product

I am a person that traditionally really dislikes phrasebooks, but this book is an excellent example of how a phrasebook should be written. Most phrasebooks just recite words or sentences, and the learner has no idea what each part of the sentence means. While a typical phrasebook may teach someone how to recite something verbatim, the learner will have no idea how the language works grammatically and thus cannot communicate effectively. This book is excellent because it provides a very good grammatical foundation for the phrases. It also has helpful, but not too complex, explanations for the phrases in the book. Moreover, there is a small English-Malay/Malay-English dictionary in the back.

Unfortunately, I was not in Malaysia long, and since I was only in KL, getting by in English was not too difficult. However, I found this book while I was there and tried to get as much out of it as I could in a couple days. I recommend buying this and studying it for a month or so before going to Malaysia. That way, you'll get the most you can out of it. Give it a shot.

More Indonesian than Malay

To be fair, I'm commenting on an earlier edition of the same title, by Oey and Hutton. As a Malay speaker, I wanted to brush up my speaking before an interview and was shocked to find that this phrasebook passes off Indonesian as Malay. Keep away if it's Malay you're interested in. A far better investment would be Lonely Planet Malay Phrasebook or the Teach Yourself Malay book.

Since most phrase books are pretty much the same it all comes down to price and the situations you will find yourself in if you are tourist you will find in this book. The important part of any book is not just being able to ask a question but being able to understand the response which this book helps you.

Too simple for the real world

This book does not provide any information that could not be found in a college level textbook. The assumptions and examples provided in the book are over simplified. If you are anything higher than a junior accountant I would suggest you purchase something else. Calling this book a "Controller's Guide" is just plain wrong.

A MUST HAVE...PRACTICAL, EASY TO USE; INSIGHTFUL!

After over 10 years in the field serving as a Controller, Business Manager, and Consultant, finally a practitioner's book that hits the target. Given the vast topic, Bragg nails the critical issues...gets you in & out of each topic quickly and provides an array of useful tools for analysis, presentation, and discussion. The KISS principle at work! Other books may cover more detail, present more elaborate formulas and in general overwhelm the reader. Bragg doesn't. You'll find his summaries quite helpful: Commonly Used Ratios; Symptoms & Solutions; and Exhibit 6.11 Recommended Analyses by Type of Acquisition, for example. Full of practical, hands-on topic reviews, examples, and analytical thinking. Numerous Exhibits showing practical layouts for presenting information...have saved me time & eliminated the need to reinvent the wheel. A must have for my reference tools...and could have eliminated several books in my MBA. Do what's in this book & do it well and you'll build a solid reputation for you and your team. I liked this book so much that I added Bragg's books "Sales & Operations For Your Small Business" and "Accounting & Finance For Your Small Business" to my tools, too...and have been equally pleased.

Este es un libro clásico sobre el periodo de la Revolución Mexicana caracterizado por la lucha de facciones desatada luego de 1913. La perspectiva de este autor, protagonista intelectual y político del régimen de la Revolución, es muy próxima a las preocupaciones de índole social del Carrancismo, por ello quizá la valoración del zapatismo y sobre todo el villismo no resulte del todo equilibrada. Cabe destacar que es muy estimable el compendio de documentos del proceso revolucionario que el autor distribuye al final de cada uno de los capítulos.

A Step Above the Norm

Let me start by saying that I don't believe in self help books or the usual corporate mind set lessons. As a result, I surprised myself as to how useful this book was. I was given the book as a gift (as I said I don't normally read this sort of thing), and started reading this with a cynical view of the content. This was quickly dispelled, however, by the simple and direct nature of the observations and the everyday examples of how winners applied these approaches. In particular, the opening section on taking responsibility for your own actions and reverting your thinking that you "are the cause rather than the effect" is very powerful. It certainly changed my outlook as I started up a new business of my own. Very impressed and much more than you'd expect.

Leadership Wisdom

This is a good introductory book into the principles and practice of leadership. It teaches about the leadership skills that are critical in today's highly dynamic operating environment where change is the only constant. In this case, it is essential to have leaders (rather than managers) who can provide the vision for the organization, show the direction and motivate people towards the realization of the vision.

The author clearly explains the critical attributes of a leader which include team building, good communication skills, decision making ability, and the ability to motivate and coach others for the effective accomplishment of goals.

The book is a good investment for those who in leadership positions, particularly those who are at the beginning of their careers in this field without much experience or previous training. The author gives useful tips which are excellent guide readers. The checklist at the end of each chapter is a useful tool to reinforce what the reader would have studied in the text.

Insightful!

If this book were an entrée, it would mostly consist of meat and potatoes. Author Marlene Caroselli accompanies her valuable handbook on the basics of leadership with insightful quotations and anecdotes. "Basic" is the operative word here. The book makes no pretense, for example, of delving into the theoretical side of leadership development. Nor does it prepare managers for specific business tasks that they're more likely to encounter as leaders, such as budgeting and strategic planning. Rather, this book is specifically tailored for current managers who have leadership ambitions, and for newly minted leaders who need a little expertise to seize control of their new roles. We recommend it as a solid menu option with lots of good advice for that eager-to-lead audience. The book is thoroughly crafted to achieve its purpose, though more experienced readers may find themselves asking, "Where's the gravy?"

A Real Must for Effective Managers Today

Dr. Marlene Caroselli has done it again! Each chapter is full of excellent tips for today's manager. My favorite, though, concerned the leader as communicator..the line that said when Cicero spoke, men marveled, but when Caesar spoke, men marched. Getting "your men to march" to be successful in achieving your management goals is imperative to a good manager...it gave me some serious and thoughtful ideas to get my "staff to march." A real must for a successful manager...Thank you Dr. Caroselli!

Another dimension, if you will...

Since learning how to fold fortune-tellers in second grade, I've fallen in love with origami. Until this book, I mostly made cranes and boxes, and avoided books because they all seemed to have variations of the same 10 or 15 shapes.

This book was, however, intriguing at first sight. The hummingbird on the cover looked almost impossibly complex to me, and even the comparatively simple butterfly is more impressive than your average paper crane.

Enough background: what about the actual content?

If you're looking for a quick-and-easy origami book, you're going to encounter a few difficulties:

-As with many step-by-step origami books, there's a complex notation that is sometimes vague. For example, the first hummingbird I made from this book took two hours from start to finish - a combination of misreading the instructions and miscreasing very small folds.

-Many of these shapes simply don't work with standard "printer paper", which tends to miscrease or tear, especially with the more repetitive folds.

-There is a large section of this book devoted to making (e.g., mixing, pressing, and drying) origami paper, which some might find unnecessary.

However:

If you're ready to challenge yourself, and perhaps drive yourself crazy rereading instructions (well-written but never-the-less complex) in pursuit of some really astounding origami, this is THE book you want. From wet-folding (wetting the paper for softer/ sturdier folds) to making very, very small toes on a frog's leg to sharpening a hummingbird's beak to a needle point, the attention to detail is unsurpassed. I haven't tried the origami papermaking myself, although I have made paper in the past, and the instructions in the book seem to be a good quality.

A one-sentence summary: Although frustrating at first, this book has allowed me to appreciate origami on a new level, and the finished pieces make WONDERFUL gifts.

A great origami guide for serious folders with excellent tips on producing paper

I ordered this book expecting a collection of fairly advanced diagrams. I was particularly interested in the Cattleya orchid model and the frog, two of my favorite subjects to fold. I was very pleasantly surprised with the book for a number of reasons. The quality of the printing and binding is superb. The diagrams are easy to follow and very thorough. The information on how to produce your own paper to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing results for any model is very nice.
I do have a few very minor issues with the book. The first is that the models designed to be folded with duo colored paper do not have two-tone diagrams. Even though you may be folding with duo paper, it makes folding easier to have a diagram with a two-color scheme. The second issue is more of a personal one. To really achieve the best results from any of these models they need to be wet folded from handmade paper. Standard origami paper or paper foil simply will not produce the results you are looking for. That being said, I am very happy I purchased this book and would recommend it to any origami enthusiast.

A 'must-have' in your origami book collection!

I bought this book this past week, not really sure whether the "advanced" in the title of the book would put me off folding any of the projects within it. I tried the "Koi" as a first model from this book, and even tried my hands at wet folding! The result was great!!

The author has taken pains to explain the steps in detail and has even jotted down points for tweaking the end result and coming up with your own perfect little model.

This book has easily become one of my favorites and I enjoy folding the designs in it. It even has a section on making your paper. Tips on the sizes, colors as well as type of paper to use for folding each of the projects are clearly mentioned. The expected size of the final model is also given, which makes it a lot easier to choose.

The book contains instructions (in the form of diagrams) to fold the following models - north American cardinal, origamido butterfly, koi, sea turtle, squirrel, toco toucan, frog, ruby0throated hummingbird, goldfish, horseshoe crab, cattleya orchid, happy good-luck bat, big brown bat, praying mantis and the panther mask.

My favorite out of these is the cattleya orchid which is a dead ringer for an original, and with the right kind of paper and wet folding, you can do wonders with it!

This book is one for experienced folders and beginners should first try their hands at folding other models / easier stuff before attempting models from this book. The designs in this book range from intermediate to complex.

If you love origami and are keen on having an origami book collection or for that matter want to try your hands at some amazing life like deisgns, this book is a definite 'must-buy'. The designs in this, when combined with the right kind of paper can produce the most captivating models which will leave you satisfied after all the effort you have put it.

too much effort to satisfy present conception of

Well written, pile of smartly selected worlds, but without real meaning. (besides that it explains to the reader how to lead a disastrous life in a trendy way.)
I didn't mind reading it once; I don't think though, I will ever have the urge to pull it down from my bookshelf to read it again. Maybe the author is too young yet, but I can image that she would be able to develop too a much more elevated level.
Best parts of the book was the explanations of Chinese way of writing/thinking, and the unfortunate climate of Leeds.

This is an intense book that, from the first line, draws the reader in a whirl of despair and hope, anger and love.
The words are hard and nasty, sharp like the scissors that Camelia uses to attack the clothes, but they also bring with them a yearning for love, to be given and to be received. A desperate cry that is lost in the days and months without number and without a name. Camelia desperately tries to come out of the emotional hole where a tragedy has thrown her and her mother. She finds an unexpected solace in the study of the Chinese characters and in getting to know the guy who helps her in this discovery. The new life and prospects that fold out for Camelia are, however, as fleeting as the summer of Leeds. A story to be read in one shot, it repels and attracts at the same time for its hardness and its truth. The reality is described through vivid and poignant metaphors that effectively convey Camelia’s mood although, sometimes, they are a bit redundant.

This book is like a cold shower. At first you don't like it and yearn to get out but if you are patient you start to see it isn't that awful or may even have some refreshing qualities.
