No one knows you like your mother (except maybe your grandma)

Cynthia Ellingsen's forte lies in describing close connections between women. In this book she portrays three generations of a family with warmth, realism, and a lot of laughs.

Chloe is a young woman in grad school with no time for men, except for her "best friend" living next door. Her mother, Kristine, throws herself into running a travel bookstore, to compensate for the fact that her husband is always on the road for work. And June, my favorite, is the commanding matriarch who hold the three generations together with boundless energy and a twinkle in her eye. She is battling her widower neighbor over the garden fence, resorting to rhodendendron-eating rabbits and full camoflage in her all-out war. She makes you want to join the family, or at least be invited to their parties.

Cynthia also describes the men in this trio's lives with compassion and a bit of spice. I especially appreciated seeing the details of the character's working lives and how they balance their ambitions with their relationships.

The prose flows easily (I read the 480 pages in just two days!) The shifts in perspective between the three characters give you insight into all three generations perspective. While June was my favorite character, I identified most with Kristine and Kevin's struggle to recommit to their marriage after 25 years, showing the heart of why "marriage matters".

The scenes in Italy were a mini vacation, and the cake tasting a feast for the senses, until it turns into an eating contest between Chloe and June for who will control the bachelorette party planning. Believe me, the better planner wins...that party is one of the funniest scenes in the book.

I recommend it for a great beach read, mother's day present or bridesmaid gift. A sure sign of a good book, I am missing the characters already. Although it seems to be categorized as Romantic Fiction, I think the complexity of the relationships place it more in a contemporary fiction category.

Favorite quote, when Kristine returns to Venice: "The air was think and humid, tinged with salt and something else sharp but subtle. The inside of an empty crab leg, the vague hint of brine, the wet rust of metal...It sparked something in her, A tiny piece of history, a moment."

Stages and Decisions about Romance!

June, Kristine and Chloe are three generations of a feisty family who know what they want, at least up to this point. Each of their lives is about to be overturned, forcing new decisions that are more carefully arrived at and threatening to totally divide them or unite them more deeply than ever before! What a journey!
June is a great gardener, that is until her neighbor Charley puts up a glaring gazebo that starts a huge fight between the two neighbors. Add to that all June's female friends think Charlie is "hot." How will their growing animosity develop or at least how could a neighborly compromise emerge? Where will it go?
Kristine and Kevin have been married a long time and now Kristine is wondering if the best of their life together has passed forever. Kevin travels constantly and is exhausted and depleted when home. After winning a trip with one of her employees, she realizes that her marriage is on the rocks. Will Kristine call it quits and what should she do or not do? This part of the story undergoes several surprising twists and turns that make the reader flip those pages furiously to see what happens next.
Chloe is just too busy to think about romance. She's working on an art therapy degree and is just about to blow it when a run-in with a very rude professor turns into something else. Is this really it? Or not? Is she destined to remain single or is the love of her life closer than she can see?
Various stages of romance and lack of same swing back and forth in the always fascinating pages of this funny, frustrating and tender story. Cynthia Ellingsen knows what lurks within the hearts and minds of every woman and the men who all too often don't have a clue. Marriage Matters: A Novel leaves the reader questioning, reading, laughing and loving it all - nicely done, Cynthia Ellingsen!

A light read with depth and romance

Chloe, Kristine, and June are all planning weddings. Well, all planning a wedding for three, they are grandma, mom, and granddaughter and are all getting married in one sensational ceremony.
Chloe and Ben have been best friends for almost their whole lives. When Chloe gets engaged to Geoff with a G she is terrified to tell Ben, her best friend.

Married for 25 years, Kristine and Kevin are renewing their vows. Since Kevin's job has him traveling more than he is home, their marriage is struggling. A trip that she goes on with an employee to Rome makes her wonder if her marriage is worth saving.

June is a meddling grandma and mom. She takes charge of planning this family wedding after her neighbor Charlie proposes. The rest of the family is struggling to keep her under control.

As I started reading Marriage Matters, I knew I would love this romantic comedy. I found myself putting faces to the characters and making them real people and making them my friends. I also loved that it was writing in a place I am very familiar with, Chicago. Living right outside the city I could relate to the weather, the closeness of neighbors, the cabbies, and the location.

As the wedding plans were made I could see exactly where each character was heading and was really looking forward to seeing how they got there. I was surprised that such a light read could have so much depth in the relationship and romance. I highly recommend this novel.

In the world of 100 Bullets, moral ambiguity comes packed in an attach‚ case with a gun, one hundred untraceable bullets and positive identification of the person responsible for ruining your life. Gimmicky, perhaps, but not necessarily a bad premise for the high melodrama of noir. However, in this instance it quickly runs out of gas, undercut by clich‚d characterizations and absurd plot contrivances. Dizzy Cordova is a young, recently paroled ex-gangbanger whose husband and baby have been killed in a drive-by. Lee Dolan is a drunken bartender whose family and career fell apart after he was framed for peddling child porn. Both are offered a chance at revenge by a pair of mysterious agents whose motivations are as obscure as their origins. Riffing off ghetto stereotypes and corny street slang instead of a convincing plot, Azzarello's story lines offer up half-processed notions of greed and betrayal, with a little violence and tawdriness thrown in for good measure. To be fair, this volume collects just the first five issues of an ongoing and complex narrative series. But the book's real pleasures can be found in the drawings of artist Eduardo Risso, whose shadow-filled, stylized renderings of urban anomie manage to convey unexpected nuances of emotion. Risso's drawings, coupled with the subtle, muted palette of colorist Grant Goleash, give the work an engaging visual moodiness that the clunky narrative is unable to match.

The next amazing piece in a grand mystery

First off read the first 100 Bullets trade. It's a great read if your a comic fan or a fan of crime literature. This second trade continues the excellent storytelling of the first trade. It answers some questions, and brings up many more. It appears the creators are setting up a huge,grand mystery. When 100 Bullets is finished I feel it will be as large an epic as Preacher was. The trade ends with a story featuring the return of Dizzy Cordova from the first storyline. And it ends with a killer last panel that will make you want even more. I eagerly await the next trade paperback. Like I said 100 Bullets is for fans of great stories(comics or otherwise)

A Fistful of Bad Dreams

100 BULLETS: SPLIT SECOND CHANCE is the second graphic novel from the award-winning monthly 100 BULLETS comic book put out by DC Comics' Vertigo line. Again, series writer Brian Azzarello keeps the mix violent and unpredictable, fusing the cold shadows of the street with the hot fury of betrayal. The book opens up with a two-part story, "Short Con, Long Odds", about Chucky and Pony, two childhood friends who grow up to be gamblers. Then Agent Graves, the unknown man of mystery who always kicks the stories into high gear, shows up carrying a briefcase loaded with a semi-automatic pistol and 100 rounds of untraceable ammunition. He tells Chucky that Pony set him up for a seven-year fall in prison that he should have taken--at the same time that Pony is stealing Chucky's woman. The biggest risk either of Chucky and Pony ever took was being friends with each other, and that's about to change. "Day, Hour, Minute...Man" offers up a quick peek into the mysterious agency that Mr. Graves works for, and shows Mr. Graves coldly dealing out vengeance of his own. "The Right Ear, Left In The Cold" tells the story of Cole Burns, an ice cream man who sells ice cream and stolen cigarettes out of his truck, and who is much more than he appears to be. Mr. Graves gives him a briefcase and the 100 rounds of ammunition, then tells him that Goldy Petrovic is the man responsible for the burning death of Cole's grandmother in the nursing home. Besides wanting vengeance, Cole also has to deal with another ice cream man trying to take his beat. But most of all, Cole Burns is a man on a mission to find himself. "Heartbreak Sunnyside Up" is another stand-alone tale that is brutal and violent, and all too real. Lilly Roach is a waitress in a diner, and a woman who has lost her teenage daughter to the streets. Then, one day, Agent Graves shows up with the story of what really happened to Lilly's daughter--and a briefcase containing a pistol and 100 rounds of untraceable ammunition. Even the back story in this particular episode resonates with truth and pain directly from the real world. The book wraps with a three-chapter arc, "Parlez Kung Vous", that takes the reader back to Dizzy Cordova, the heroine introduced in the first graphic novel. She's in Paris on assignment, hooking up with a man named Mr. Branch. She has a lot in common with Mr. Branch. He was a reporter, very different from the barrio life Dizzy knew, but he was also offered the briefcase and 100 bullets--only Mr. Branch didn't use them and his life is now in jeopardy. The mystery surrounding the Trust, the Minutemen, and Agent Graves is cleared up a little, but only enough to reveal that more twists and turns are ahead.
Besides writing 100 BULLETS, Brian Azzarello has also worked on the HELLBLAZER series, BATMAN/DEATHBLOW, the JONNY DOUBLE mini-series for DC COMICS, and STARTLING STORIES: BANNER, CAGE, and SPIDER-MAN for Marvel Comics. Eduard Risso, the co-creator of 100 BULLETS, has also drawn for BATMAN, the horror anthology FLINCH, the JONNY DOUBLE mini-series, and comic books in his native France.
100 BULLETS: SPLIT SECOND CHANCE continues the same throbbing beat of violence and sharp emotion summoned up in the previous graphic novel. Each volume, so far there are four, stands on its own merits, but there is something to gain by reading them in order. As always, Azzarello's characters are sharply drawn and come across as real people with real problems. Primarily those problems are always about betrayal and the need for vengeance. Azzarello moves easily about the urban landscape of the real world, and his stories echo with current events. His dialogue puts a fine point on what could simply be just a collection of out-for-revenge stories. The characters are torn between the need for vengeance, the loss they're going to suffer when they act on that need or choose not to, and they're torn over the fact that once they follow up on that path to vengeance that their lives are going to be forever changed. Risso's artwork displays those worlds, those streets, and those emotions with knowing ease, while at the same time conveying the heaviness of life to someone living in the shadows. The fact that the vengance stories are only pearls on a string, and that the string is actually part of a much greater story Azzarello is telling is awesome. Readers can start to see the beginning bones of that story in these tales, and the imagination will reach to fill in the other gaps.
This graphic novel is definitely recommended to fans of Azzarello and Risso's work. Also, any fans of noir and action movies will find a lot here to whet those appetites in the brilliant dialogue and panels that accompany these hard-edged stories. Comics fans that regularly read Ed Brubaker, Greg Rucka, and Chuck Dixon will find a new favorite author in Brian Azzarello.

Series really begins to take off here

When I first dipped into the world of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso's "100 Bullets", I have to confess that I wasn't immediately taken. I had picked up the first volume a year ago based on the strong word of mouth and was pretty underwhelmed by what seemed to be little more than an assortment of slang-ridden short stories centering on revenge. I didn't dislike it, I just felt like maybe the hype was a bit too much.

With "Split Second Chance," though, I'm starting to see where all the critical raves are coming from.

The cover blurb on this drew me back in with the promise that things were going to start to be tied together into a larger narrative. And in fact, that's what happens. We re-enter the world introduced on the first volume, a world in which wronged people are given an opportunity to seek vengeance with an untraceable gun that allows them to operate above the law. But unlike the first volume, here we begin to see that these acts of vengeance are tied together, with hints of something much bigger than the seemingly one-off stories of the first volume. Secret organizations, shady characters, and some looming conspiracy. Azzarello doesn't lay all his cards out on the table, but offers just enough hints so that you want to find out more. Top notch work. I'll probably be catching up with this series now.

El libro muestra un desarrollo histórico de la ciencia excelente. Perfecto para comprender la naturaleza y desarrollo de la cienca a través del tiempo. Presenta las complejidades de la producción científica y su relación con el desarrollo ulterior de la ciencia. Sin embargo, a pesar de ser lectura obligada para cualquiera que desea conocer más acerca de la ciencia, recomiendo la versión en inglés. Esta versión en particular contiene numerosos errores de concordancia y no permite seguir una secuencia lógica en la lectura. Mas que exponer la ideas del autor, el traductor tiende a confundirlas.

About the Author
Hans Holzer, whose investigations into the paranormal took him to haunted houses and other sites all over the world, wrote more than 140 books on ghosts, the afterlife, witchcraft, extraterrestrial beings, and other phenomena associated with the realm he called “the other side.” Among his famous subjects was the Long Island house that inspired The Amityville Horror book and film adaptations. Holzer studied at the University of Vienna, Austria, and at Columbia University, New York, earning a master’s degree in comparative religion. He taught parapsychology at the New York Institute of Technology. Holzer died in 2009.

Hans Holzer is one of the best writers of ghost stories that I've ever read. However, the only complaint that I have is many of his books contain the same stories with a few new ones thrown in. For the price, this is a must have for Holzer fans.

About the Author
SIMON COLLINSON is Professor of International Business and Innovation at Henley Business School, Reading University (UK) and Guangbiao Chair Professor, Zhejiang University (China). He sits on the governing councils of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the British Academy of Management (BAM) and has held the roles of Deputy Dean and Associate Dean (MBAs) at Warwick Business School. Simon has over 20 years of executive teaching and consulting experience with a wide range of multinational companies in the areas of strategy, innovation and international business. His research has recently featured in The
Times, The Sunday Times, BBC Radio 4, the New Statesman and the US News and World Report.

MELVIN JAY is a Founder and CEO of the Simplicity Partnership. He has over 25 years of commercial and consulting experience. He spent the first 15 years of his working life battling complexity in blue-chip companies like Danone and Novartis. As a consultant he now works at the Simplicity Partnership, tackling the most difficult complexity problems with some of the world's biggest companies, across different sectors, including retailing, professional services, pharmaceuticals, financial services, technology and consumer goods.

An excellent book on a topic of growing importance in organizations today. The authors do an excellent job to explain the difference between good complexity and bad complexity, and use relevant case studies of recognized companies to explain the difference, and the tipping point where complexity stops adding value to a company's proposition.

Solid work. I highly recommend it!
