I thought the book was a wonderful book. It kind of helps novice riders get a feel for real big time shows, and I thought Bonnie Bryant made it sound like a real horse show you could just picture it in your mind.

The Saddle Club are on their way to New York To watch the National Horse Show in Madison Square Gardens. Max's former student, Dorithy DeSoto, will be competing in the Open Jumper class and Stevie, Carole, and Lisa can't waite! Especaly when they learn that Skye Ransom, the famous movie star, is going to be shooting his new movie, City Cowbow, in New York! They plan to spend their time relaxing and riding on the bridle paths in Central Park. I don't know if relaxing is the right word to use when Lisa, Stevie, and Carole learn Skye's big secret; HE CAN'T RIDE! The Saddle Club is determined to get Skye over his fear of horses. But can they teach him to ride before it's too late?

Excellent horsey fiction

I'm an adult and I'm pretty picky about my horse fiction. Horse Show is fairly accurate in its horsey detail with The Saddle Club visiting New York City, and has a well-written storyline that was a pleasure to read, even if this is the first Saddle Club book you have ever read. It's perfect for readers 9 & up.

Realmente estoy disfrutando la lectura de este libro. En especial porque soy una persona muy curiosa, y siempre he sentido mucha curiosidad por saber qué rayos es la física cuántica. Yo estudio artes, y lo más probable es que nunca me vaya a dedicar a la física. Por eso recomiendo este libro para gente igualmente curiosa que no necesariamente quiere dedicar su vida al tema, pues está escrito de una forma bastante comprensible y aclara muchas de las dudas que mortales como yo puedan tener acerca de algo tan complicado como lo es la mecánica cuántica. Tal vez a un experto en el tema le resulte aburrido o poco novedoso, pero para mí está excelente.

Wonderfully crafted mystery

I know whenever I read a book written by Lorraine Bartlett, she is going to take me on a fabulous journey that transcend time and place and draws me into the goings on in Victoria Square, right alongside Katie. I loved the way this drama flows from one chapter to the next as the mystery kept me guessing with some surprising twists I didn't see coming until it happened and I do love that in a mystery. The more I learn about Katie, the more I like her and the relationships she has with her vendors and friends. Boasting a diverse cast of characters, a warm comfortable atmosphere and enjoyable dialogue, this is by far, the best book in this wonderfully crafted series and I look forward to the next adventures with Katie and her friends.

3.5 stars - Unhappy main character drains the fun from this cozy series

Widow Katie Bonner's dream of running a Bed and Breakfast is shattered when she learns her late husband used all their savings to purchase a struggling craft mall. Katie is now the reluctant manager of Artisan's Alley and also the president of Victoria Square's merchant association. Both roles require Katie to deal with quirky characters and strong personalities, but she still finds time for a little romance with pizzeria owner Andy Rust as well as help the local police force solve a few murders.

"One Hot Murder" is the third installment in the Victoria Square mystery series, but it is not the strongest entry in this series. Katie is still getting over the betrayal by her husband and what that has done to her finances, but she complains about it from the beginning to the end. Even one of the book's characters comments they've heard this story over and over. I don't blame her for being upset, but she is becoming bitter, draining the fun from the series. I love the parts of the book which focus on Katie's management of the mall. This unique set-up with all the various characters is the strong point of the series, but unfortunately takes a back-seat to Katie's complaints. I like the sub-plot of Detective Davenport's retirement and it helps make the book more interesting.

Katie seems very happy with her new boyfriend Andy, but I don't care for them as a couple. She has more chemistry with her gay best friend Seth than with Andy. However, while Seth is a fun, kind, dependable guy, Andy is a workaholic who rarely has time to spend with Katie and won't even fix the a/c in the small apartment she rents from him. I see affection and friendship between Katie and Andy, but no romance or passion.

The mystery itself has many twists and turns and kept my interest throughout the book. The ending was a bit confusing and rushed, but the book is fast-paced and a quick, cozy read. I hope Katie can find more happiness in her life so future books can focus on the mystery and not Katie's unhappiness and yearning over a Bed and Breakfast she can't afford to buy.

Lorraine Bartlett is turning up the heat on Victoria Square!

Third in the Victoria Square Mystery Series, this book does not disappoint, in fact if anything, it surpasses with a mysterious fire and death in Artisans Alley. As Katie's mind races between one suspect and another, one victim and another, the reader is hard put to try and outguess the protagonist. With her keen sense of intuition, she needs to talk her ideas out with someone. What a time for Detective Davenport to retire! So many loose threads, but who is holding the winning one, the one with the right answers? Why did two men disappear at the same time, with one body left behind at Artisans Alley? Katie has two many suspects and too many victims. But Detective Davenport does not go lightly into the sunset but is actively hoping to solve this last case before his official retirement date and time. Who died in the Wood U fire?

Another thorn in Katie's side, she has once again seen her dreams of owning the Webster Mansion to a new buyer. Turning to Seth, her lawyer friend, she finds no answers but more questions, but on meeting the new owners, she finds that they have a lot of ideas similar to her own, and even better, she really likes them. But can she part with all her stored treasures she bought in anticipation of turning the house into the English Ivy Inn?

In this sizzling early summer heat, tempers flare, strange things are happening at the Alley, and the air conditioner is ill-equipped for both the extreme temperatures and the size of the building. Going home at the end of the day to her room over the pizza parlor is no better. Emotions run high, and dealing with Ida's frustrating personality has driven her to remove her from the Alley. A decision that will come back to haunt her.

Once more Lorraine Bartlett has given us a very hot mystery to keep us guessing. A large part of the charm of the Victoria Square Mystery Series is the camaraderie shared by so many mainstays in the series, and that charm continues. Well-written as always, introducing new characters and perhaps a new direction, this book will certainly keep our brain cells cooking! With Katie's mind going in so many directions, there are twists and turns galore. Recipes included.

About the Author
Bel Kaufman (1911–2014) was a bestselling writer, dedicated teacher, and lecturer best known for her novel Up the Down Staircase (1965), a classic portrayal of life in the New York public school system. Kaufman was born in Berlin, the daughter of Russian parents and granddaughter of celebrated Yiddish writer Sholom Aleichem. Her family moved to Odessa when she was three, and Russian is her native language. The family also lived in Moscow before immigrating to New York City when Kaufman was twelve. There, she graduated magna cum laude from Hunter College and with high honors from Columbia University. Kaufman then worked as a high school teacher in the city for three decades. The success of Up the Down Staircase launched her second career as a sought-after speaker for events around the country. Kaufman is also the author of Love, Etc. (1979), a powerful, haunting, and poignant novel rendering life as fiction.

Ups and downs

Schoolteachers make up a pretty small percentage of the population, but "Up the Down Staircase" gives us a little glimpse of exactly what it is like to be one. Especially an idealistic-to-a-fault one who has to deal with a... well, shall we say, interesting group of students. (That is to say, more than a little insane)
Miss Barrett arrives at Calvin Coolidge High, to teach English to a motley band of students. Among them are: Hormone-addled Linda; resentful, angry Joe Ferone; woman-hating Rusty (who repeatedly tells Barrett that he would like her if she weren't "a female"); Edward Williams Esq., who thinks that everything is racially-prejudiced; soppily romantic Alice, and a slew of others. Miss Barrett realizes over time that the kids are screaming out not just for education, but for love and understanding. But will her idealism break through to them?
This isn't really a novel as people generally think of it -- it's composed of skits, letters, notes, and occasionally stretches of dialogue between the teachers and students. Sounds awful? It isn't. Instead it's cute and quirky, and if you get past the odd format it will become immensely enjoyable and coherent. The dialogue is funny, especially since quite a few of the students don't spell-check. ("Fuk"?) There are also suggestion box excerpts ("You think it's fair when a teacher takes off 5 points on a test just because I misspelled his name wrong?"; "We're behind you 85%!") and book reports ("We study myths to learn what it was like to live in the golden age with all the killings"; "We read it because it's a classicle"). One chapter is even devoted to the extremely imaginative lies that the students think up to explain what happened to their homework ("Some one stole it") with a bit of honesty as well ("I didn't know we were supposed to do it").
There are more serious moments, such as one young woman dying after a botched abortion, and a lovelorn girl jumping out of a window because her crush read one of her love letters. And Barrett's disillusionment near the end is as saddening as the response of the students is uplifting. It's also rather pleasant to read that a teacher with genuinely good intentions and hopes can make a positive difference, even though it lacks in realism. The peculiar narrative drags a bit during the first fourth, but picks up after that with more about the students and less chitchat between teachers.
"Up the Down Staircase" is touching and funny, a novel in the barest sense but immensely enjoyable. It's a little weird and drags at times, but it's still fun. And if you're a teacher, you'll probably be weeping at the traumatic memories it brings back.

Kids are still the same

I first read this book back in the 1960s before I entered the teaching profession. I have read it several times since. Having just retired from teaching after 34 years, I can say that kids are still basically the same as described in this book. They may have laptop computers now, but their personalities are the same. We still have the teacher pleasers, the lovesick girls, the politicians, the misfits, the loners, and all the rest. My mind has gone back to this book many times as I encountered situations similar to those that faced Miss Barrett. As a matter of fact, as English Department chairman, I often quoted her boss, Mr. Bester: Let it be a challenge to you. I recommend this book to all who would venture into the exciting and wonderful world of the school teacher.

The Best Antinovel I've Ever Read

Don't be put off by my title. An antinovel is merely a book that rejects the traditional elements of a novel. In "Up the Down Staircase", the story is told through letters, memos, notes left in suggestion boxes, and scribblings in notebooks. Some people may consider the letters the clumsiest part of the novel, as they are too detailed and precise to have been written directly from the protagonist's memory (as they are supposed to have been). That is not the point, however, as this clumsiness is something you only notice after you've finished reading (hopefully), assuming that you're really into the story.
Like all other books about teachers-who-touch-the-lives-of-students, this novel is touching, poignant and funny--and properly depressing at the right times. It is also full of the strangest characters, teachers and students alike. Yet real life teachers will recognize their own students in the fictional ones and real life students will agree that the weird teachers in the novel are pretty realistic.
What makes "Up the Down Staircase" different from others of its kind (e.g. "The Blackboard Jungle") is that even though it is "messagey", it was not written by someone who had an axe to grind. Yes, Bel Kaufman exposes the terrible working conditions and lack of respect public school teachers get, as well as the poor education students are subjected to--but Kaufman is no Dickens! (Thank goodness!) The crusade to help teachers and students is put in the background, where it belongs; and the story of Miss Barrett, her students, and the other colorful people of Calvin Coolidge, remains in the foreground.

I have been a long time fan of Jeremy Robinson's novels. I read and loved 'Antarktos Rising' and 'Beneath' back when they were first published. Yet his new novel, 'Island 731', showcases just how far his writing has come since then.

'Island 731' starts with a bang and doesn't lay off the throttle for the remainder of the book. This book is a nonstop blend of action, suspense, horror and real-life science. I was constantly checking Google to see if what he was describing was actually based on fact - and over and over, I was shocked to find it was (for example, the number '731' refers to an actual Japanese operation in WWII - look it up!).

Mark Hawkins, a former tracker in Yellowstone, becomes shipwrecked on an uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean. As he and the crew begin to explore the island, they uncover hideous experiments left over from a Japanese Research Base from WWII. Yet all is not as it seems on this island and the twist at the end is spectacular.

Jeremy Robinson has invented a tropical paradise in 'Island 731' - yet a paradise with a sinister past. Robinson has conceived some fantastic creatures, described with perfect detail, that will give you goose bumps, again and again. One scene late in the novel, when the BFSs are introduced, is one of the most suspenseful scenes I've read in a long time.

A great new character has also been introduced in 'Island 731'. The ending was set up in a way that almost guarantees a sequel. Who knows?! Maybe Mark Hawkins can team up with Jack Sigler in the future!

Island 731 is an absolute, must read book. I am calling it now and it is one of the best books of 2013!

The crew of the research ship, Magellan is out in the Great Pacific. They are researching the Garbage Patch. While there they come across a huge sea turtle. The turtle is dead. They bring it onto the ship. There they discover that the turtle has a deformity. Only it seems that the deformity was human induced. Before they can fully understand the extent of this discovery, the ship and the crew are washed overboard due to a storm.

They awake to discover to one of the crew members is missing. A search party forms to find the missing crew member. The group gets more then they bargained for when they come upon the inhabitants of the island.

I can officially say that I am a fan of Mr. Robinson! This book by far exceeded my expectations. This is saying something huge too. I knew what to expect from Mr. Robinson having read SecondWorld. Which by the way I also loved. Only this book just became my new favorite of Mr. Robinson.

It was creepy in a sci-fi sort of way but also there was lots of drama to keep me intrigued. Also, all of the characters were great, even the bad guys. I could definitely see this book being made into a movie on the big screen. I could not stop reading this book. The further I got into the book, the more intense it got. I got the imagines of the experiments in my mind. Lets just say that I am glad I never have to worry about meeting any of the experiments. I can not wait to read Mr. Robinson's next book. Island 731 is an absolute, must read book. I am calling it now and it is one of the best books of 2013!

Robinson nails it again!

I started reading Jeremy Robinson with books like Antarktos Rising and Kronos. I thought they were pretty interesting, but then came the Chess Team novels and they were great. With the Chess Team novellas Robinson completely redefined what a novella is supposed to be. And SecondWorld and Project Nemesis were even better. All this to let you know that I started in Island 731 with pretty high expectations... But even I wasn't prepared for this!! Island 731 is all you could hope for if you like excitement, monsters and science gone haywire. The story reminded me a bit of the Deadworld novels by Harry Harrison that I read as a teenager. Or more recently, of Warren Fahy's Fragment. But Island 731 is in a class of its own. The characters are great, the action just never stops, the humor is a blast and reading the book is like watching an extremely well-made B-monster movie. This book just grabs you by the throat and never lets go! Clearly, Robinson is getting better with every new novel he turns out and I can't want to get my hands on the next one.

A side note for book lovers: although I love to touch and hold physical books, I'm slowly switching to reading ebooks, if only because I'm running out of space... But Jeremy Robinson's books are made with a great love for books and that shows! The covers are gorgeous, the paper is of very fine quality and that only enhances the whole reading experience. Which is why for a lot of authors I've switched from hardcovers to paperbacks to ebooks. But with Robinson, I found myself switching to hardcovers because I just wanted to hold and own the physical book and didn't want to wait for a paperback.

So, if you've never read Jeremy Robinson, do yourself a favor and give one of his books a try. Island 731 would be a very fine introduction indeed!!
