"Self-awareness is everything."

University librarian Samantha McDonough is surprised to discover a single sheet of paper "buried between the pages of a very old book of eighteenth-century British poetry" that she purchased in a used bookstore. She is in England with her boyfriend, Dr. Stephen Theodore, who is attending a medical conference. Sam, who was born in America, had once been a doctoral student of English literature at Oxford University. Unfortunately, she was forced to abandon her studies in order to care for her ailing mother. Now she holds a fragment of an unsigned letter dated September 3, 1816 that she suspects (drum roll) was written by Jane Austen. Various clues in the letter lead Samantha to believe that Austen may have also written a full-length novel in 1802 that disappeared before it ever saw the light of day.

Syrie James's "The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen" is two books in one. Samantha's story parallels that of Rebecca Stanhope, the beleaguered heroine of Austin's unpublished tale. It turns out that the seventh full-length Austen novel was hidden in a ramshackle Georgian country house in Devonshire owned by a handsome and charismatic venture capitalist named Anthony Whitaker. Sam visits Whitaker and after a thorough search, they find the literary treasure. (To complicate matters, Sam struggles to suppress her growing attraction to Anthony.) Meanwhile, in the Austen novel, "The Stanhopes," the "lively, intelligent, handsome, and accomplished" Rebecca Stanhope lives with her father, William, a rector, in the tiny village of Elm Grove. The Stanhopes suffer a series of reversals that deplete them of their financial resources, destroy Mr. Stanhope's reputation, and force them out of their beloved home.

The author's knowledge and admiration of all things Austen is impressive. We are soon caught up in Samantha's excitement at finding a new work by a writer whom she reveres, and we sympathize with her uncertainty about what to do next. "The Stanhopes" is engaging, with its vividly portrayed characters, appealing heroine, myriad twists and turns, and numerous romantic entanglements. The themes are universal: Take chances; embrace change; learn from your mistakes; enter relationships with your eyes open and for the right reasons; distinguish the true from the false; trust your judgment and be loyal to those whom you cherish.

It should come as no surprise that the iconic Jane Austen is difficult, if not impossible, to imitate. Syrie James is capable and ambitious, but "The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen," although entertaining, fast-paced, and eminently readable, does not approach Austen's originality, wit, satirical bite, and sophistication. Still, this is a worthy and touching homage to a literary genius who is still venerated almost two centuries after her death.

The Stanhopes is terrific

I will not attempt to repeat the underlying story of this novel, as it has been very nicely summarized in other reviews.

The prospective buyer should be aware that about 90% of "The Missing Manuscript of Jane Austen" is, in fact, a novel entitled "The Stanhopes," which is the missing manuscript of the title. It is a story about change, and how change can be beneficial, and is presented in total, from title to finis, a complete novel within the "novel." "The Stanhopes" is nothing short of brilliant, and if I could give it 10 stars on the Amazon scale I would. "The Stanhopes" is why every Austen-phyte (and you know who you are) should immediately buy this book and read it. You won't be sorry. My recommendation, however, is to skip over the other 10% on the first read - it just gets in the way - and is not nearly as good as "Jane's lost novel."

I could pick some nits with "The Stanhopes." For example, the novel lacks the mature Jane's sparkling prose and witty dialogue - though Ms. James has a valid explanation for this - but in the end, I loved the story, and if you're a JAFF fanatic, you will too.

I note that Ms. James is a screenwriter. I could hope she would adapt "The Stanhopes" for the small screen, as I think it would make a terrific mini-series.

Love it!

Finding a missing manuscript by Jane Austen is any fan's dream come true. I often think it's a tragedy that we didn't get to have more books by Austen. Even though she only finished six books, her influence is still alive today. I've also read and enjoyed the writings of Syrie James. So of course with my love for all things Austen and my admiration of James, I couldn't help but find this book appealing in every way.
Samantha McDonough is the protagonist of this story. She travels to England with her boyfriend. He's attending a medical conference. This gives Samantha the perfect opportunity to do some sightseeing. While out shopping, she impulsively buys an old book of poetry. She later finds that it has a letter pressed between its pages. She is in no doubt that the letter was penned by none other than Jane Austen. After reading the letter a mystery starts to unfold before her.
This book is a story within a story. Samantha does find the missing manuscript of Austen. Syrie doesn't leave her audience hanging though, half the book's contents focus on the manuscript. I enjoyed reading this story as much as the other one. Syrie took quite a few characteristics from Austen's life and books and put them into 'Austen's' new story. As for Samantha's story line, I really enjoyed that as well. Who doesn't love a good mystery? I love the characters, the conflicts, and the resolutions. It did not disappoint.
Overall, I really like this book. It was fun to read, and I didn't want to put it down. If only this book were based on a true story, then is would be perfect.

About the Author

Abi Maxwell was born and raised in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire, where she currently lives. She studied fiction writing at the University of Montana, and now works as an assistant librarian at the Gilford Public Library. This is her first book.

Disconnected

This book really failed to capture my interest. If it was any longer than its brief 210 pages, I would not have finished it. It was just dull and the chapters were so disconnected from each other that the book never had a smooth flow or rhythm to it. Perhaps if the chapters were richer in detail they could stand on their own as short stories, but as they were, each one felt more like a muted vignette. Though the setting played perhaps the largest role in the "novel" none of the chapters felt fully rooted in this unique location. Without the year heading each chapter, the time period would be basically indistinguishable. There really was an opportunity here to make at least that part of the story come to life, but unfortunately, 1910 had much in common with the scenes set in 1994.

The premise at the heart of the novel - an adopted woman finding her biological roots - was certainly one that caught my attention, but the mystery never included the reader. The lack of flow between these chapters was further compounded with the oddly shifting perspective. There were chapters here from first-person, third-person and an oddly reflective third-person... It made it impossible to connect with any of the characters. It was a shame because some of the sentences were quite lovely and descriptive, but there weren't enough of them consecutively to compensate for the massive inconsistencies between chapters.

A dazzling debut; an unusual novel told through stories

"Lake People" by Abi Maxwell is a positively stunning debut, an exquisite novel in the tradition of Marilynne Robinson's "Housekeeping" and Elizabeth Strout's "Olive Kitteridge." I read it once slowly and then immediately turned around and read it again even more slowly. Why? Because the author's well-crafted, precise, and distilled prose was a thorough delight, a quiet pleasure...something easily savored twice.

"Lake People" is an unusual novel told in stories; together the stories form a complete and interconnected whole. Overall, the book is about the life of Alice Thornton, one inhabitant of a small town in the Lake District of New Hampshire.

The book begins where it ends, in 1982, when Alice is 24. In the first chapter, Alice recounts the story of how she was discovered in 1958 as an orphan in a basket in a canoe tied to the boathouse of a prominent town resident. We learn about her great-great-grandmother, Eleonora, whose story forms part of the common heritage and mythology of the town.

In the next chapter, we move back to 1910. Alice's biological grandmother, Sophie, tells a story about her Aunt Signe (one of Eleonora's daughters). That chapter is called "My Heavenly Days" and it is one of many outstanding and satisfying self-contained stories in this unusual novel.

The story "Hush," finds us in 1958. This is a third-person narrative recounting the details concerning the discovery of Alice as an orphan. We learn about Alice's father, mother, uncle, grandmother, and grandfather. We also learn about Mike Shaw and his girlfriend June, inhabitants of the rental above the boathouse where Alice was discovered. This chapter is not so much a self-contained short story as it is part of the architecture of the ongoing tale of Alice's life.

The next story is called "Free." It is one of my favorite complete stories within the novel, and it is told as a third-person narrative. In it we learn about an important event in the life of Alice's adoptive parents, Clara and Paul Thornton.

This is followed by a chapter called "Crossing." In this story, Alice narrates, in the first person, two related tales about her friend Devnet. In the first story, Alice is 12 and Devnet 13. Their friendship ends over how Devnet reacts during an incident that tests their integrity. The second tale is occurs when Alice is 36 and Devnet is 37. They meet again, this time by chance, and similar moral issues arise.

The next tale is called "Lake People." Alice is 16. This story is told as a third-person narrative and recounts a significant event in Alice's life. We learn more about Mike Shaw and his wife, June. We also learn more about Alice's father. Together with "Crossing," the previous story, this chapter teaches us more about the wealthy inhabitants of the Lake District, the folk who own mansion vacation homes in the area.

In "Hill Country," Alice is 21. This short story is told as a third-person narrative and recounts Alice's brief marriage to Josh, a man who she loves deeply but who is incapable of loving her back. We also get to know one of Alice's cousins, a poor and uneducated woman name Martha who is related to her biological mother. It is another outstanding, self-contained short story, an incredible emotional tour-de-force.

The last five stories all take place in 1982, when Alice is 24. The first chapter, called "The Village," is a third-person narrative recounting Alice's visit to find and meet her adoptive mother, who abandoned Alice as an infant. At the end of the piece, her mother gives Alice a deed to an island property in the Lake District once owned by her great-great-grandmother, Eleonora. This is another amazing and deeply felt self-contained short story.

The next chapter is called "The Island." In it we learn about Alice's adventures discovering and living in her new island home. It is a touching story about opening yourself to love after your heart's been broken, and then having your heart broken once more, because of a significant misunderstanding. This is a heart-wrenching short story that, although self-contained, we are happy to have played out to a better conclusion in the final chapter.

The next tale is called "Polite." In it, Alice's biological grandmother, Sophie, writes directly to Alice in a first-person narrative. She tells Alice what she feels about other family members and family events. It is an apology of sorts, but it is also very revealing about Sophie's character and life. This chapter is part of the novel's architecture and ties pieces from the other stories together.

"The Old Factory," is, perhaps, the best short story in the novel. Discover it for yourself. It is brimming with life and amazing in every way.

The final chapter is called "Return;" it is not a self-contained short story but a first-person narrative told by Alice that tacks a lovely and fitting conclusion onto the story arc composed of all the other stories in the book.

This is an unusual novel where each chapter tells a complete and satisfying story; together they give you an unforgettable portrait of a life, a people, and a place. Maxwell finds the extraordinary in the ordinary and imbues it with such a life force that the reader feels transported in time and place. If you enjoy complex, character-driven novels rich with emotion and an almost-being-there sense of place, this could be one of the books you've been searching for. I recommend it highly.

Decent Story Almost Drowned By Confusing Style

At the heart of LAKE PEOPLE is a decent family story set around a New Hampshire lake. The time frame ranges from 1910 to seventy some years later. Five generations of a family that originated in Sweden are included though the youngest family member Alice an adopted child who finally discovers her roots is the main focus. Author Abi Maxwell appears to be so determined to show off her writing skills that she chooses a confusing style for her novel when a more straight forward approach would have provided a much more accessible, pleasant read. The book can be deciphered in to sense by a patient reader and the story is really quite interesting when finally unraveled. However I am not sure how many readers will make the needed extra effort since though the book is adequately rendered it is not a really important book that is definitely worthy of the extra thought and time required. This is a short book that unfortunately seems like a much longer one.

Revolutionize your presentation

This book has revolutionized the way I will make presentations! Now I know clearly why everyone yawns and looks at their watches frequently during a typical presentation. We don't want a lecture with boring powerpoint slides! We want to be coached and mentored through a process in which we can fully participate. highly practical and useful

I have started reading last night and I am impressed how James Caplin manages to walk (write) his talk. I immediately found great and higly useful distinctions about what is a presentation and what not. Thanks to some down to earth usable tools written in a simple and attractive language preparing for my next presentation feels lighter and more doable already.

Excellent, fresh take on communication

Like most, I am constantly presenting ideas at work, whether formally or informally. The GOER methodology gives you tools that force you to rethink your old bad habits. The book is very engagingly written and gives loads of concrete examples.

I tried the methodology with a recent presentation and saw a big improvement, although I wasn't 100% satisfied. The only caveat is that my presentations are typically remote and the emphasis here is mostly on live presentations. Still, I'll be hanging onto this book and referring to it over and over at work.

Very Good Collection of Essays summarizing Research in Higher Education areas

I liked this volume very much. The article that really stood out for me (because of my research interests) was the one on use of anonymous student evaluations. I found that one article was almost worth the price of the book. It was balanced and informative. It is well-documented and very readable. I thought it stopped short of discussing the inherent unreliability of such anonymous evaluations and could have done a better job of explaining the various ways in which faculty can sometimes "game" the system and the ways in which factors such as class size and the shape of the classroom, factors outside any faculty member's control, influence student evaluations. As I write this, I tried to find my copy and discovered that it is out on loan to a junior faculty member who is facing having to use student evaluations for her tenure decision. [Usually I do not loan my books - but I saw the need was there.]

Who was Dan Leno? In 1901 everyone in Britain knew who he was. They had seen him live on the music hall stage, listened to his jokes on the new gramophone and watched his funny antics in some of the earliest moving pictures. Even King Edward VII was a fan and the popular press dubbed Dan Leno “The King’s Jester”. But his path to fame was a hard one: he journeyed from being a child performer in the London and Liverpool slums to a chaotic career in hard-bitten northern variety theatres. Dan became the nation's favourite comedian, but as one of the first mass media stars he suffered from this continual exposure and died at the early age of forty three.

Drawing on many previously unused sources, this is first, authoritative, biography of Dan Leno. Only Charlie Chaplin, often compared to Dan in style and appearance, was to occupy a similar position in the hearts of the British public. In telling the full story of Dan’s life and career on the stage and screen, Barry Anthony brings to life the everyday life of Victorian Britain, as well as Dan’s unique brand of humour and its resonance with later comedians such as Spike Milligan and the Monty Python team.

Barry Anthony is a historian with a particular interest in the Victorian and Edwardian period. He has written extensively about popular culture and entertainment, co-authoring, with Richard Brown, a groundbreaking study of the early British cinema, 'A Victorian Film Enterprise'.

A fine tribute to a great artist

A few years ago - having been interested in Dan Leno's reputation as "the funniest man on Earth" - I bought a CD of archive recordings of his work. I didn't expect them to be side-splittingly funny after a century and I was surprised to find myself laughing out loud at some of his quirky lines ("We've been out of work twelve months. They knocked the house down where we used to stand at the corner."), and marvelling at his inventiveness. In one monologue about 'The Robin' he leaves several seconds of silence, a daring use of a new aural medium.

This new book places Leno firmly in context as an important figure in British humour. Prior to him music hall was filled with larger than life 'lions comiques' such as George "Champagne Charlie" Leybourne or traditional figures like Harlequin and Pantaloon. Dan Leno created humour from real-life figures we see in our daily lives: downtrodden husbands, waiters, shop workers, gossiping housewives, even scheming politicians. He paved the way for stars such as Buster Keaton, Will Hay and Laurel and Hardy. Some of his rambling monologues sound remarkably like Frankie Howerd's material ("No. I'm wrong. Wait. No. That's right, yes. And there was a postman in it as well somewhere.") The sub-title of this book calls Dan Leno a "Victorian Comic Genius" and fulfils the promise by showing us how original and ground-breaking he really was. If his humour seems commonplace now, it is because it has become the accepted template for today's comedy.

Unfortunately Dan Leno died far too soon at the age of 43. Apart from his recordings there are only about 30 seconds of moving picture footage. These only give a tantalising glimpse of his humour, and no idea at all of how he could work to a live audience. If he had been given another 20 years of life we would have better films and recordings, another 30 and we might have had talking films (albeit of an old man).

He may seem a distant figure from a forgotten era, but this book shows why Dan Leno's memory should be preserved. The human race will always need laughter and we should be grateful to those who provide it. This book is highly recommended.
