Great Guide to Higher Education Without Debt

Anyone from a high school senior to a career changer would benefit from reading this book. It is a definative guide on how to get financial aid and choose a course of study that leads directly to a well paying job. Of particular interest are certificate programs that can be completed in under a year and vitually guarantee employment in fields such as court reporting with salaries starting at $60,000.

The author is a community college president who knows first-hand that these institutions are an affordable alternative to getting a four year degreee and amassing more than $24,000 in debt.

Many community college graduates are now earning higher starting salaries than liberal arts majors at four year schools.

This book has the answers to the problem of college affordability and is a must for anyone considering a degree in higher education.

There's no question that the cost of college is well beyond the means of many American
families. The fact is, however, a college education continues to be the most reliable
means of establishing a career and improving one's employability and earnings
potential. It's no longer discretionary. What makes The Community College Career
Track such a worthwhile read is that it helps families bridge the gap between the need
for a college education and the need to fund it without relying on debt. This book helps
demonstrate that there is a better way, and that the community college is the key to
making high education affordable and career-relevant.

Before I read this book, I didn't know much about community colleges. What a revelation! It seems like the four-year, residential, liberal arts college experience is at odds with the realities of today's job market. Wouldn't it be great if every young person read this book before following the herd and incurring thousands of dollars in debt in the process?

Our go-to family hiking guide

We love this book! It's our go-to book when we are looking for a weekend family hike. It's easy to navigate, has detailed descriptions of the hikes, and easy to read maps. We have discovered a few places to hike that are super close to our house, that we didn't even know about. The hikes are all perfect distances for our toddler and easy to get to locations. Laure's Best Hikes with Children Facebook page is also a great resource with current listings of outdoor events in the Bay Area. I highly recommend this family hiking book. A resource you'll come back to again and again.

Great resource, very detailed and accurate

This is the book that got me hiking with my daughter at age 3 - way younger than I thought she would be able to navigate the rugged terrain of the Bay Area. It is thoroughly researched, accurate, and insightful. If you find a single hike in this book that you didn't previously know about, it is worth far more than the asking price.

It Takes Patience Above All

Years ago my wife and I would take her then four year old granddaughter hiking. I'm glad we did. That little girl was better for it. Kids need to be exposed to nature up close. But hiking with a four year old is really challenging. "Look! I see an acorn! Look, there's another." Of course, the whole trail was littered with acorns and we collected as many as we could carry. One half mile and an hour plus later, we were back at the car, and I was somewhat grateful I never had kids of my own. Parenting takes patience, and never more so than when you try to introduce children to the out of doors.

The Bay Area, with its profusion of state, regional, county, and national parks has more places to take kids than most urban areas. Laure Latham's new book explores these areas with kids in mind. An extended introduction tells you how to introduce kids to nature, and what to expect from various age groups. In all, she describes 100 hikes appropriate for toddler to teens. Like many guide books to the Bay area, this one divides the region by county lines. A wide variety of hikes are included from paved level routes suitable for strollers to more challenging explorations of wooded areas. Each hike includes a decent sketch map and detailed route description.

In all, I think this is a decent book and worth a read, especially for parents who want to make sure their little prodigies don't suffer from the increasingly common nature deficit disorder. But honestly, I admire anyone who is so dedicated to their kids that they are willing to take them along on their own break times. Especially toddlers. You need patience to hike with little ones. And eventually you will be rewarded for it. This book gives you a glimpse of those rewards to come.

Dana Fear can imagine one hundred other places in the world she'd rather spend the rest of her senior year, but imagining won't change the fate that has come ot her. For Dana Fear is forced to spend the rest of her senior year at Shadyside High, with her cousin Jamie. The Fear name doesn't have a very good reputation in Shadyside, what with all of the evil history told about them, so Dana receives a very strange welcome. People either want to get to know her in an attempt to learn more about the Fear's, or they steer clear of her, treating her like a witch. But then she's invited to join the Night People. Dana realizes now that Shadyside isn't so bad when you're getting a buzz with some of your closest friends at a bar called Nights. That is, until the evil strikes again. Soon, the Night People are being picked off one by one. Dana tries to tell everyone that she's innocent, but all fingers are pointing at her. After all, she is a Fear...

Sequels are rarely better than their predecessors, but in Stine's case, MIDNIGHT GAMES outshines MOONLIGHT SECRETS - if that's even possible. MIDNIGHT GAMES, narrated by Dana Fear, introduces a new character who raises suspicion in every scene she appears in. Her high-fashion good looks, and I-could-care-less personality will make her appealing to readers; while the characters from the last book in the trilogy, MOONLIGHT SECRETS, will make readers feel at home with some old friendly faces. Overall, this is a fabulous sequel to MOONLIGHT SECRETS, that screams of more death, blood, and...evil.

It was a decent book good suspense. It started off as a little slow and got faster then went to slow and boring and confusing. It picked up and got to be faster and easier to understand.

I'm going to show you a little bit of the book to get you a little taste of it.

There were these friends and they heard about this mansion and the family that had lived in the mansion. The family knew all about magic and witchcraft. The wife named Angelica Fear was knew all about witchcraft and had a blue jewel that gave her immortality. So she used it and came back in a body that wasn't hers... It was Jamie's...

One day Dana Fear came into the town for the summer to spend with her family and Dana is related to the Fears and Bad things started happening and they all blamed Dana ....so read the rest of the book to find out what happens......it'll blow your mind.

A year has passed since the events in "Moonlight Secrets." The night people are still recovering from the death of one of their own. Jamie's cousin, Dana Fear, arrives in Shadyhigh. Dana is going to finish high school there. And yes, Dana is a descendant of the Fear family.

Dana starts hanging out with the night people - a group of teenagers who hang out at 3a.m.. She befriends Nate, who is still getting over Candy's death in "Moonlight Secrets." Strange events start to occur, and the body count rises. Is Angelic Fear back from the dead?

"Midnight Games" is a fun, fast-paced sequel. There are more screams and scares than the previous installment. It was clever to bring in Dana Fear, as she is connected to Simon and Angelic Fear. I can't wait to read the final book.

In her thirties, Perillo was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis—a difficult thing to hear for anyone but especially poignant for an outdoors type as much in love with nature as Perillo, who when younger worked as a ranger in various wilderness settings. Back then, she took her body and good health for granted. The early days of the diagnosis and the attendant uncertainty of not knowing what kind of future awaited her became nearly unbearable. In one essay, she describes her conflict over what to call herself. "Cripple" or "disabled"? Disliking the latter's negative connotations, she preferred clinging to the fantasy "that I could do anything with the right technology." She describes her physical symptoms, muses about Greek and Latin tragedies, and reminisces about former occupations, including a stint teaching remedial English at a college attached to a Benedictine monastery before her limp became pronounced. Whatever the memory, the illness haunts her without actually defining her. Written with the sensibility of the poet that she is, a lovely portrait of resilience, hope, and true grit. Sawyers, June

A book worth your attention

It used to be one could recommend only three books that dealt with the complexities of multiple sclerosis in a manner both truthful and stylish: Diary of a Disappointed Man by W.N.P. Barbellion, Baroque 'n' Roll by Brigid Brophy and Lost Property by Ben Sonnenberg. Now I've Heard the Vultures Singing must be added to the list. Like Barbellion, Lucia Perillo is a gifted naturalist; like Brophy, a wit; like Sonnenberg, an ironist. More important, Ms Perillo is an accomplished poet. She commands a variety of voices: slangy, sexy, sublime. All of them are on show in this book of prose which is, in equal measure, hilarious and poignant.

I read everything Lucia writes and am never dissapointed. Both her poetry and prose flow beautifully on the page like a spring stream. Her deep insights on life form a back-eddy that will keep your brain swirling in thought for days after. Because of common interests and experiences: Buddhism, birds, east-coast Italian childhood, former park ranger, western-Washington state resident, etc., I delight in reading her take in these similar areas. Perillo always has unique and facinating insights that make me want to slap my forehead and go, "why didn't I think of that."
This book like her others is both tragic and funny. Maybe a little more sad because of the progression of the disease. Her husband Jim, who is mentioned several times in the book is a comic inspiration; not only because of his dedication, but his comic wit removes the chance of too much sentimentality.
I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates good, thought-evoking prose and especially if you have a medical condition where your body is changing and moving toward its final end - well, I guess that's all of us.

Former park ranger and award-winning poet Lucia Perillo presents I've Heard the Vultures Singing: Field Notes on Poetry, Illness, and Nature, a memoir of the ups and downs in her life. When Lucia was in her thirties, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; I've Heard the Vultures Singing recounts the difficulty of coming to terms with losing the ability to walk. She had to give up some of her favorite outdoor activities, such as hiking and skiing, and learn to enjoy the wilderness with lowered expectations, as well as how to apply her poetry to access and experience the wilderness. A thoughtful, reflective, autobiographical narrative about adapting to severe change, highly recommended.
