Touching, tragic examination of an ostensibly modest life

Perhaps more than any other English-speaking author, Graham Swift is able to capture the poignancy, the thwarted emotions, and the poetry which can lie behind seemingly mundane lives. Although not as well-known as "Waterland" or "Last Orders" (which cover much the same emotional landscape), "The Sweet-shop Owner" seems to be their equal in quality. The novel covers one day in the life of an aging, lower-middle-class man, moving back and forth from the minutia of his business routine to the painful memories of his failures as a husband and a father. Swift's prose really is a joy to read -- at its best he can create a "Madame Bovary" sort of mood -- and he can create vividly believable supporting characters, like the drab shop assistant who has centered all of her hopes on marriage with her boss or the self-indulgent teenager who nevertheless finds herself awkwardly responding to the title character's decency.

Keeping the "old firm" in business.

An exceptional first novel from an important novelist, thus 5 stars. Here, Graham Swift looks at boundaries: The narrow geographical boundaries of the small London suburb in which the story is set ("We never moved out of these narrow bounds. Born here, schooled here, worked here,") and the narrow emotional boundaries of his characters' relationships (The paragraph continues, "And even when I met her I stood here on the common and thought: enough, now everything is in its place, and I in mine.") The theme of narrow boundaries is deftly rendered in the relationship of the sweet-shop owner, Willie Chapman, and his wife Irene who, from the start, sets the limits of their relationship, and in the father/daughter and the mother/daughter relationships, all locked within narrow confines.
Swift is quoted as saying: "I think if you know that you have a talent, then . . . you should try not to dissipate it. You should try to hold onto it and keep it, concentrate it - not to do as the whole world tends to do these days, and diversify. Diversification doesn't work with art. Keep the old firm in business, don't go into other fields of trade." Although some believe that his later work reveals a talent as a dramatist, may his "old firm" of novel writing thrive well into the future.

I was browsing the FAQ on Elizabeth George's website where it said that Graham Swift was one of her favorite authors. Elizabeth George is my favorite author (I highly recomend reading her book For The Sake Of Elena or Deception On His Mind) so I decided to give him a try. I am very glad that I did. Graham Swift came close to replacing her as my favorite author. This book is one of the best that I have ever read, and I have since devoured everything that he has published. This book had a deep effect on me and if you read it, I think you will find it a very rewarding experience.

This is a very creative and fun book to read to my son!

My 2-year old son received this book as a gift, and we thought it was one of the better books we've read. Not only are the "googly" eyes on the front of the book hilarious, the poem inside - in the spirit of "Ten Little Monkeys" - is very creative. My son loves me to read it to him, and I've found that I enjoy it too. I found it somewhat educational for myself as well because I learned about new dinosaurs and did not have to make up names for the ones that my son likes! We also have fun looking at the pictures of the dinosaurs at the back of the book and looking at my son's toy dinosaurs to see which ones they look like. And, now he is almost 3 and knows the names of some of the dinosaurs just by looking at a picture of one. This book made it fun for him to learn them. Bravo to a well written, very creative, educational children's book!

My 3 yr old and 5 yr old boys love this book. Not only is it chosen for story time but it keeps my 3 yr. old very content while I'm driving my other 3 children to their various destinations all week. I highly recommend this book.

My 2 and 5 year old made a trip with friends to the beach and they brought along this book. We loved it and wanted one for ourselves. The rolly eyes are very funny to watch. The words were challenging for me to read and fun to listen to when someone else read it.

HELP WANTED is a devotional for the unemployed millions seeking strength for the journey.

In July 2012, Businessweek.com posted that the U.S. recovery is weekening. Approximately 12.7 million Americans are out of work. Hoping to encourage the unemployed, underemployed, or badly employed, career counselor Aaron M. Basko has written this devotional.

HELP WANTED includes sixty days of encouragement and advice for job seekers and career changers. Mr. Basco includes scripture, practical suggestions and honest anedotes, in an attempt to strengthen faith and renew hope during the job hunt.

Each devotional begins with a verse. Then it goes into a short story mixed with Biblical truths and ends with an application and a statement of encouragement. Then it includes a short paragraph called "one small step for today" which gives you job hunting advice, such as update your resume or focusing on skills you have that might use, have, or want to acquire.

My first thought about receiving this devotional for review is that it has a rather limited audience. But I didn't realize that so many Americans are out of work. Chances are that you know someone who is looking for work--or you may be yourself. If so, HELP WANTED is a devotional for you to consider encouraging yourself or someone else with. It does have an upbeat feel, is encouraging, includes scripture, and will help you apply practical and necessary discipline to the job search.

This devotional for Job Seekers in this still slowly recovering 2016 economy, offers a level of hope in supporting themselves and/or their families through God's perspective, the Bible. We are all seeking something bigger than the 'reality of life.' Sure, a job helps with our self-worth, self-esteem, and self-motivation, as well as, supporting those we love. The purpose of a job is partly to place food on the table, a roof over our/families heads, something to challenge our mind-heart-soul to do and be something more than the some of our mineral-muscle-mental parts. As a former supervisor/manager, I found the value of a job is in the positive relationships we build with our God, family, friends, fellowships, co-workers, clients/customers, and management. Through our jobs we learn about ourselves. A job can test our perseverance, develop our character, and offer us hope in the form of trust and faith.
So, my prayers are with you, Job Seeker, that God blesses your Preparation, Plans, Direction and Presentation as part of that laborious job seeking process toward being hired into that career that complements your past experiences, knowledge, education, abilities, skills, and spiritual purpose in life.
