Good content, but Kindle edition not great...

Excellent content and every page completely relevant and well written. The biggest downside however, is the poor picture and table quality in the Kindle edition. Whether viewing on my Kindle 3, my retina display iPad or my HTC One the poor quality really is disappointing for this otherwise premium book. If you're looking for my recommendation: unless the publishers opt for higher resolution pics and images ( which I hope they would do... But doubt it at the same time) then rather get the print copy.

A must read for any serious Leafs fan.

I have been a Leafs fan since 1989 and I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it - which for me at least is the first test of a good book. Many people are culpable in the demise of this great hockey club over the past 40+ years - the demise being in terms of winning anything as opposed to making money of course (which they still seem to do better than anyone else). All the rogues are dealt with here - Harold Ballard, Kerry Fraser, ownership, management and the corporate types who have taken over the ACC all warrant special mentions. Hopefully things are now looking brighter for Leafs Nation but this book gives a good understanding of where and why it all went wrong.

Wolpe, who teaches at the University of Judaism in Los Angeles, uses Judaism as a grounding point for a general spiritual quest. He emphasizes that Jews are bound together throughout history by their belief in one God, their resilience and their great gifts to culture. Judaism, he says, as "a religion of joy and affirmation in spite of the sufferings of the Jewish people," honors all features of being human, stresses the importance of deeds as a sign of faith and rejoices in the personal, deep involvement of God.

This little book is a beautiful read. He describes the essential ideas, attitudes, and perceptions of Judaism with eloquent, if not poetic, language that touches the heart. I am not religious or observant, but I am seeking to find my own spirituality within Judaism. This book goes straight to the heart of Juadaism. I highly recommend it.

Extremely rewarding & short too

I loved this book! In a very few pages, it gives you a sense of why the author, and by extension anyone else, would want to be a Jew. Moreover, the book is written in a beautifully lyric prose, which was beautiful & easy to read. I would love to mass produce this book & give it to every non-Orthodox Jew as well as anyone thinking of conversion. What a treat!

The author answers the question "Why Be Jewish?" in three organized and artfully written sections from a non-sectarian Jewish perspective. The reading is easy yet insightful and intelligent. I'd recommend this book to anyone considering conversion to Judaism as well as family and friends of the convert. (Of course, conversion to Judaism is a highly personal, serious task and is not encouraged.) Furthermore, the book does not replace a halachic (Jewish law) authority, and anyone with questions should contact their local orthodox rabbi.

The Gourmet Detective, an ex-chef, so far nameless(Spiced to Death, 1997, etc.), has been hired by famed actor/restaurateur Desmond Lansdowne to take on what appears a delightful mission: to travel to Italy and choose the best chef of the three generally acknowledged as that countrys finest. Lansdowne wants to open what he insists will be the best Italian restaurant in London, and the chosen chef will rule its kitchen. Gourmet, whose ostensible mission will be to gather material for a restaurant guide (... la Michelin), is met in Italy by charming Francesca, a friend of Desmonds who runs an escort service and knows everyone. In Bologna, the two are invited by chef Silvio Pellegrini to visit a mozzarella factory and a buffalo herd at his farma visit that ends with Pellegrinis death in what looks like murder. Between dissertations on the wines and regional dishes of various areas, theres a murky plot involving extramarital affairs, legal chicanery, and greedy business dealsmost of it near-incomprehensible except to theatrically handsome policeman Captain Carlo Cataldo, who seems to have a grip on the confusing mess. Great descriptions of food! but...

I continue to read this series because of the great descriptions of food. I love to cook, and to read about cooking (I read cookbooks recreationally), and the thing I love most about this series is that there's none of this "They ate dinner" nonsense; the exact dinner, often including how things are prepared is lovingly described.

That being said- I think some of the other reviews are way off when they trust King to have his facts straight about the details of food and wine. I am hardly an expertm yet in every book so far I've encountered at least one whopper of misinformation; enough to make me mistrust the "facts" of all the other data. In this one, for example, one of the top 3 chefs in Italy was very fussy and refused to serve any parmesan cheese that was not freshly made that day. And.. parm is widely renowned for being an AGED cheese. There can not possibly be anything like fresh-that-day parm. Given the context, he may have meant mozzarella... though that did not seem to me to be working in terms of flavor and texture in the context. There is also a reference to deadly interactions between Prozac and unspecified vegetables; while I have not extensively googled this, I have seen no such connection in actuality. Given, these, I wonder how much more misinformation is in all the "facts" that King cites and that people seem to be trusting to be true.

I like learning random facts from novels. Unfortunately, King makes enough stuff up that I cannot trust him as reliable.

And then we have the same problem here as with the others; for some reason- unknown- Our Hero is irresistible to the ladies. OK, this time the gorgeous chick seems to be getting paid for it, but still- I think we're looking at a real Marty Stu here.

Plotwise- recently, there's been a meme going around that says in part "Getting your protags INTO trouble via coincidence is fine. Getting them OUT of trouble because of coincidence is cheating." King cheats a lot this way.

I guess the difference between a good book with an unreliable narrator, and a mediocre book with an unreliable narrator, is partly whether or not the author realizes that the narrator is unreliable. I see no reason to believe that King recognizes this.

Still- lovely food descriptions! They're3 good enough to maqke me want to occasionally read one of these novels.

death al dente

Peter King's writing, like a fine wine improves with age. "Death al Dente" The fourth book in the Gourmet Detective series, is possibly King's finest work to date. The food descriptions make your mouth water and the information about Italy and Italian wines is truly enlightning. Combine the food, the wine and a multiple murder mystery and you have a book well worth reading. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a penchant for culinary mysteries.

Death al Dente, 4th "Gourmet Detective" Novel

Peter King created the concept of "The Gourmet Detective" with his first novel in that continuing series by that exact name. The Gourmet Detective investigates issues related to gourmet food, fine wines, exotic ingredients and the recipes involved. In this novel, "Death al Dente," the fourth in the continuing series, the Gourmet Detective is sent to Bologna, Italy by his client to evaluate each of three world-class chefs so that one may be lured away to be the star of a new and best Italian restaurant to be located in England.

A common theme throughout these Peter King novels is found herein - that an outwardly simple task is made troublesome by mischief, mayhem and murder, with the Gourmet Detective in the middle of it all. He is helped in this task by his beautiful, wilful and enticing locally-sourced Italian escort, the lovely Francesca, who not only helps solve the crime but is introduced as a key character and a foil to the Gourmet Detective. She also provides an insight as to the author's depiction of beautiful, sexual, passionate and self-confident Italian womanhood.

Taking place in Bologna and the surrounding area, the novel transports you to that classic Italian city, the local life style, it's cuisine, wines, cheeses, archecture and historical value.

This is escapist entertainment and adventure in its purest form, and an inexpensive way to learn about Bologna, its fine cuisine, wines and colorful inhabitants, as portrayed by characters in this novel.
