As threatened in Charlie Joe Jackson’s Guide to Extra Credit (2012), Charlie Joe’s parents make him attend Camp Rituhbukkee (pronounced “read-a-bookie”) for three weeks. He thinks the kids there are all nerds, so from day one he decides to turn the other campers into “normal” kids (like himself) who don’t always have their noses in books. Right off he irritates the camp leader, Dr. Mal, and knows he must watch himself—sort of. He leads the camp basketball team in a win over Camp Wockajocka; he writes a newspaper opinion column in which he leads campers in a strike; and, on the last day, he skips the final exam to protect another camper from having someone cheat off her. Ultimately, rather than Dr. Mal barring him from ever attending camp again, Charlie Joe becomes a hero. This third book in the series is so very middle school: full of laugh-out-loud humor as well as adolescent drama, growth, and development. The best CJJ yet!

This book is a little different from the previous two Charlie Joe Jackson books. It read more like a traditional novel, whereas the first two were built more on his list/guide. I loved those books, finding them full of humor and heart, but I thought this one was even stronger.

Maybe it's because he's coming over to the dark side -- could he actually be liking learning and has he found a book he can't put down? Or maybe it was because he got to be the hero and save the day, but I love this sort of a ne'er-do-well even more after reading this book.

Enough random gushing -

Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Summer Vacation begins where Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Extra Credit leaves off. His parents' and counselor's wish/threat that he attend Camp Rituhbukkee (pronounced "read-a-bookie", the best name ever!) for three weeks comes to fruition. It's not all bad, because several of his good friends are there, and there are some others who he enjoys getting to know.

And for the first time ever, he's seen as a jock, leading the team against the annual basketball game against Camp Wockajocka (another great name!). He inspires his campmates to bring out their inner jock, but he also uses his brains to outsmart them.

There's a little middle-school romance (which means a lot of "liking" of each other), and an increase in self-awareness -- breaking beyond their stereotypes be it Charlie Joe Jackson's cut-up who just does what it takes to get by, or the kids who are known only for their brains.

This story had all the elements I love -- some suspense, kid-power, growth, heart, and humor. You don't necessarily have to be familiar with the first two books since it's a new setting and so many new characters are introduced, but I'd recommend the whole series.

Fantastic book!

This third book in the Charlie Joe Jackson series (Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Not Reading, 2011, and Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Extra Credit, 2012) is a winner. Entertaining, substantive, and endearing, Charlie Joe, in a moment of weakness, agrees to be sent to Camp Rituhbukkee (pronounced "Read-a-Bookie"). Once there, he will do anything to get the nerdy campers to be less nerdy, and more like him. Charlie Joe becomes an unlikely leader and it turns out he has more integrity than he thought. Interspersed with complimentary black and white illustrations and letters to and from friends back home, reluctant and avid readers alike will enjoy Charlie Joe's summer vacation. This series is good for readers who are ready for the next step up from The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Review based on an ARC.

Author and "gay shaman" Christopher Penszack created an outstanding and groundbreaking resource for the gay Wiccan community in this thorough and heartfelt guidebook. Despite the fact that homosexuals often found spiritual nurturance and respect within the Wiccan cultures of the past, modern day practitioners usually avoid any discussion (or even acknowledgement) of gay witchcraft. Thankfully, Penszack not only breaks the silence, he does it with grace, clarity, and enormous integrity. When speaking to spell-casting ethics and the laws of magick, Penszack emphasizes the Wiccan Rede: "We believe in the Rule of Three, meaning all you do comes back to you three-fold, or three times as strong as your original intent," he explains. "As a result, all your intentions, even if directed at someone else, eventually return to you, so keep your intentions with the highest of morals." From this foundation of causing no harm, Penszack gets down to the nitty-gritty of gay witchcraft, such as meditation techniques, animal totems, altar-building, auras, spells, and invocations. His writing stays tasteful yet candid as he delves into the tantra-like section on "Sex Magick" where he suggests spells and activities to encourage connection and healing (including a "soul baring" exercise of massaging and/or licking a partner’s chakra path and then maintaining eye contact during orgasm). Witchcraft has plenty to offer the homosexual community, according to Penczak (City Magick), a self-proclaimed gay shaman. Not only does it have a strong history of tolerance for homosexuality; it actually has a rich tradition of homosexual involvement and esteem. After finding shame and persecution in the Catholic Church, Penczak fled to the Wicca community, where he found "a sense of belonging... to my own spirit." This is one of the only books on the market that delves into the fascinating historical roots of gay witchcraft while also providing homosexual-specific advice on spells and rituals. One of Penczak's strengths is his broad-reaching wisdom when it comes to love and sexuality. Most of his guidance could be relevant to practitioners of all sexual orientations. What witch isn't interested in knowing a few spells and potions for creating more trusting, loving, passionate and spiritually nurturing relationships? Who wouldn't love to soak in a "healing heart" bath with pinches of lavender, rose petals, catnip and rosemary? Don't Miss This Book!

This is the best book I have ever read on Wicca and the key to unlocking this spirituality for me. I have been interested in Wicca and paganism for a long time and just sort of dabbled, but never got too involved. I even had pagan friends and went to pagan events, which were beautiful, but I could never seem to find my own connection. Most of the books I would pick up on paganism just didn't speak to me or seem too interesting, even though I felt Wicca to be closest to my own spiritual nature. I tried Dragon wicca and gothic wicca, and both left me cold. After moving to the Northwest last year, I discovered New Witch magazine at a local bookstore, which I think is a great publication! Ads in that magazine led me to this book, Gay Witchcraft. Christopher Penczak writes in a way that is very enjoyable and conversational as if he is sitting there speaking with you. He takes you through witchcraft in an enjoyable, step by step manner that brings everything together and gradually makes sense as part of the whole. I had always had a bit of misgiving about witchcraft because I had trouble believing there were zillions of deities just out there floating around in the sky somewhere. Now that I've been reading this book, I understand that isn't really what witches believe and have a clear understanding of how it all works. A good friend of mine who is pagan said I would know my path when I found a book that not only "clicked" with me, but that it should cover things like working with energy, grounding oneself, etc. This is the basis for the first part of the book, learning how to work with energy and get oneself in the right energetic state before even attempting to work on more complex things like spells. No wonder so many people are turned off by witchcraft, most books make it sound like you can just light a candle, mumble a few words and your spell will come true. That isn't the case, it takes a lot of focus, energy and hard work, like most things. Although this book is written for gay practitioners and creates a great comfort level for us, I believe it would be a useful book for anyone getting into wicca and wanting to know how it all works and how to put it together. I don't know if it's coincidence, but since I've been working with this book, a lot of things in my life are starting to go the way I want them to. Even things I never thought would happen are happening. And I definitely, finally feel connected to something spiritual, which is giving me newfound inner strength and confidence, I even quit smoking! Thank you, Christopher, thank you, thank you, blessed be!

Promising - but not, essentially, delivering.

I was quite excited when I saw this book - hey, a book about wicca that specifically adresses gay people. Sadly, the issues that I expected to see in this book (Gay deities? Polarity, or not? Specific handfasting rituals? Politically inclined gay/lesbian pagans, and how this affects their faith?) were not really present, or only skimmed over.
This is a fantastic book for a gay or lesbian person who is new to Wicca, and wants the basic facts. It welcomes into the religion, and takes into account their different sexuality. But it's still a Wicca 101 book - for anyone who has read Starhawk, or Cunningham, or even Ravenwolf, this is a replay with a few brief mentions of 'gay' Wicca. At that point, your best bet (and my suggestion) would be to get a basic wicca book (Starhawk's Spiral Dance is my personal favorite) and to check out your local/University library for specific information as to bisexual deities and religious approaches. Check out Renaissance literature, in particular - the Zeus/Ganymede romance attained epic proportions. Boswell's analysis of early Christian religion also includes some information about pagan religions. Or just read feminist spirituality and environment books - they generally acknowledge lesbianism.
Frankly, I'd be incredibly interested in a 'Gay Wicca' book that isn't also an introduction to the religion. There are many of us who are priests and priestesses, and have been for years - it would be nice to have books adressed to us, as well. I'm probably going to have to write that, however, if I actually want to see it printed.

Empowering His Gay Brothers

In this volume, Christopher Penczak synthesizes his personal gay life experience with his knowledge of Wicca tradition, but as he clearly states in the introduction, this is not a scholarly book just for reading. His intent is to empower his gay brothers and he encourages us to experiment with and to try the dozens of meditations and exercises he presents throughout the book.
The book is divided into three parts. In Part One, History and Mythology, Penczak presents an account of pagan history as it relates to witchcraft in general and gay witchcraft in particular. He begins in prehistoric times and ends with Arthur Evans, Harry Hay, Michael Thorn, Greg Johnson, Sparky Rabbit, and others who have worked to reclaim the Wicca tradition for gay men. The section covering gay positive deities is encyclopedic and multicultural including ancient Roman and Greek deities, Mayan, Chinese, Celtic, Hindu, Native American, and deities of other traditions.
In Part Two, Tools of Our Tribe, he presents the hands-on tools used in the witchcraft tradition. He begins with internal tools (meditation, visualization, and concentration), and goes on to animal guides, altars, the home, preparation of "the temple of your body", and covens. The last section of Part Two presents beginning concepts in ritual, including casting and releasing the circle.
Part Three, Empowerment-Love, Sexuality, Healing, and Ritual, is the true heart of the book, covering seven chapters and more than 135 pages. Here Penczak deals with spells and magick, and their use in love, sex, and health. In the last chapter he makes some of his most important statements. First he points out that his book is only a beginning, a point of departure for the magical life. He encourages readers to explore other pagan paths and find what works best for them. Then he discusses the importance of integrity and commitment, particularly as they relate to integrating magic into all aspects of life. Special attention is given to self-acceptance, relationships, and activism.
The book concludes with a helpful bibliography and a listing of online sources.
For those of you looking for a basic introduction to gay witchcraft, this is a good book to read and experiment with. It is also an excellent view of how one gay man intergrates paganism with his own life experience, and serves as a model and inspiration for anyone interested in doing the same.

Good content, but Kindle edition not great...

Excellent content and every page completely relevant and well written. The biggest downside however, is the poor picture and table quality in the Kindle edition. Whether viewing on my Kindle 3, my retina display iPad or my HTC One the poor quality really is disappointing for this otherwise premium book. If you're looking for my recommendation: unless the publishers opt for higher resolution pics and images ( which I hope they would do... But doubt it at the same time) then rather get the print copy.

A must read for any serious Leafs fan.

I have been a Leafs fan since 1989 and I really enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it - which for me at least is the first test of a good book. Many people are culpable in the demise of this great hockey club over the past 40+ years - the demise being in terms of winning anything as opposed to making money of course (which they still seem to do better than anyone else). All the rogues are dealt with here - Harold Ballard, Kerry Fraser, ownership, management and the corporate types who have taken over the ACC all warrant special mentions. Hopefully things are now looking brighter for Leafs Nation but this book gives a good understanding of where and why it all went wrong.
