Loved this book!

I choose this rating because I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book. While I have read many of Carly Phillips' books, I hadn't read this one. I couldn't put it down! I read it (almost) from the first page to the last in one sitting. I was disappointed that it ended so soon. (Too soon, for me.) Now I am really eager for Perfect Fling to be published....which is the next book.
The characterizations are so true to life, the emotions so poignant...the situations so possible........
well, I simply loved it and wished it was longer!

I have been a fan of this series ever since the first book, so I was really excited to learn that Carly would be continuing the series with the Mardsen Family.

I should probably give a disclaimer that my DH's name is Mike and he was a cop, and oldest son is adopted and also has the name of Mike so I was already going to love Mike Mardsen.

Mike is one of the heroes who is slightly damaged. Not because of anything he had done perse, but more because of his perceptions of his biological dad who left before he was born. This has colored everything he has done for most of his life. So when he comes home to Serendipity to help out the Police Dept while his dad the current Police Chief is going through cancer treatments. He figures this is going to be a quick come in help out and then head back to NYC and his life. He doesn't count on Cara or having to confront his families past, and his biological father.

Cara is one of those heroines I would like to come out of the book to be my friend, she is that kind of person. She is brutally honest and her word is sacred because of the way she grew up. Out of necessity she has to distance herself from her mom, even though it breaks her heart to do so.

Mike and Cara together are one of those couples who instinctively know that the other one needs and this causes all sorts of feelings between the two of them they don't want to acknowledge or admit it.

Carly has done an excellent job of writing a character like Mike is so true to someone with his background its almost as if he was real. As I read the parts where he discuss or thinks about his bio dad and adoptive I felt like I was back in my sons therapy sessions, the emotions and thoughts so real.

Mike Mardsen is one of the best heroes I've read this year.

I can honestly say that this book is one of the top books I've read, and one that I will re-read. It's Carly Phillips at her finest.

I loved, loved l.o.v.e.d, LOVED this book (yes I sound a bit fangirl-ish) ~Under the Covers

What can I say? I loved, loved l.o.v.e.d, LOVED this book (yes I sound a bit fangirl-ish). Lets start with the easy things and talk about the story. This book was by far the best this series has to offer as far as combining a great, slightly romantic suspense, contemporary romance. Mike is back in town to fill in as temporary Chief of Police due to his father's cancer battle. After his brother Sam is in a car accident, he has to take over an investigation he had started on a cold case that slowly uncovers family secrets.

But that's just about the slight suspense. What I really loved about this book was the characters. They are both badass, alpha in their own ways and just a bit, or more than a bit, damaged.

Mike thinks he is cut from the same cloth as his birth father, and will leave any woman he's in a relationship with. So he likes to keep things light and always make sure he can walk away. He's up front and tells women not to have expectations. And that's how he gets involved with Cara. Cara is a cop, his brother Sam's partner. They had a one night stand 3 months ago when he was visiting, and now that he's back they kind of pick up where they left off with the understanding that things will be casual and temporary.

Cara is, as a I said before, damaged in her own way. Her mom is the victim of domestic abuse and still continues to stay in that relationship. This is one thing that hits close to home for Cara and she's made it a point to help women that are going through that, to get out of that situation.

But together, they compliment each other perfectly. Their chemistry is off the charts, but they are supportive of each other when they need to and know when to give each other space. Mike is, I can almost say, perfect. I don't mean there's nothing wrong with him, but he's the kind of guy any woman would want next to her. He's intense, he wants deeply, he loves strongly. He's very alpha with a touch of sweet. Not the funny guy, but the serious one you know you can rely on. He's swoon-worthy. And Cara is a strong woman, who has been through a lot and has made tough choices in her life. Just the type of heroine I love to read about.

With this book, we are technically moving on to a second trilogy in the Serendipity world. Yes, this is Serendipity # 4. But it could also be considered book one because we are moving away from the Barron brothers and now have a new family to read about, the Marsden. Mike, Sam and Erin. And let me just say that I couldn't resist reading the teaser from PERFECT FLING, which is about Erin, and I can't wait to get my paws all over that one. I loooove a good bad boy.

Another winner in my library!

I love anything written by Jeanine Basinger! As archivist for actress Maureen O'Hara and editor/designer of her official website, all of Jeanine's books are on my library shelf (now on my Kindle Fire). Her take on classic films and actors are invaluable to my research. This latest book did not disappoint.

To me it isn't just what the script writer did with his/her characters, but how it was handled and interpreted by the actors and directors. In my generation (1940s) we were taught the "cottage with the white picket fence" and "happily ever after" concept of marriage but Hollywood added a reality spin to it; some glamorous and some not-so-glamorous. It was quite an adventure from the front row center of the movie theater. I feel that Jeanine gathers it all and sorts through the maze of this fascinating history. Another book....well done. Thanks Jeanine.

Considered Marriage Review

I expected this book to be a lightweight review of marriages in movies. I was pleasantly surprised as it was a thoughtful, well considered review of the role of marriage in films. I consider myself a film buff and this book mentioned some I was unfamiliar with. This could serve as a start to a reference paper on the portrayal of marriage in Western culture. Comments were thoughtful and served to raise awareness as to studio representation of men, women and the role of marriage. I thoroughly enjoyed this thoughtful read and will look for further work by this author.

A text that explains plot , character and story lines.
If you are into movies, this is a seminal work.
Basinger is a first class writer giving a birds eye view
of the workings of the movie industry.

Texts such as the Catalepton, the Consolatio ad Liviam and the Panegyricus Messallae thus illuminate the strategies whereby Imperial audiences received and interrogated canonical texts and are here explored as key moments in the Imperial reception of Augustan authors such as Virgil, Ovid and Tibullus. The study of the rhetoric of these creative supplements irreverently mingling truth and fiction reveals much not only about the neighbouring concepts of fiction, authenticity and reality, but also about the tacit assumptions by which the latter are employed in literary criticism.

Interesting Book

This is an interesting book for those readers who study Late Republic/Early Empire rhetoric. The author clearly knows the literature, and her writing is clear, detailed, and well documented. My only compliant is that when I emailed the author with a question, she didn't bother to respond. Yes, I'm sure she is busy--aren't we all? But professional courtesy is at play here and was ignored.

Genell Dellin grew up in a household of seven, which included Grandpa Grady, who raised vegetables in a big truck patch and hauled fruit from the Rio Grande Valley to sell door to door, and Gram (Ara), well known for her down-home Southern cooking. Several of her recipes are now Lilah’s. Genell has written both historical and contemporary romance novels. She loves to hear from her readers.

Tea that lacks body

I was looking forward to a nice relaxing, what I call hammock book- a book I can just lay back and read and relax with. This started, very quickly showing that it lacked a few factors to make it completely enjoyable.

First on page 2 we begin to read of family problems. Meri's mother, it seems has kept her away from her grandmother, Lilah, and told her Lilah didn't want to see her. What? Why? Evidently, if you haven't read the first book, you are not included in on many of the personal backgrounds of the main characters. You can, after many pages assume what is going on, but it becomes a real irritation to be left out of the storyline, when all it would take would be an introduction or a few sentences included in the narrative.
We are left out of much of the background of Lilah's and her sometimes friend, Doreen's past. This would all be less of an annoyance if there was more depth to the characters; but even the main 2 - Meri and her off and on boyfriend Caleb have a shallowness in their descriptions too. Their thought processes also become jumpy at times.

Then we have poor Meri's self-doubts about herself and almost everything around her. Somehow she cannot even fathom why Caleb might have to spend a huge amount of time working on his ranch and home that he has purchased and is trying to save and make into a working proposition. Horrifying that he would think he might have to take care of his cattle rather than help out in their café???
This might have been an interesting series and story, but there are just too many obstacles.

Major disappointment

I was disappointed in the book as there was no plot or character study. In the first book Honey Grove book, the author actually had a plot and the book held my attention. However, Sweet Tea for Two left me wondering why I spent the money to read a book which was strictly romance with no real plot, character study, or depth..
