From the Publisher
One morning, Andrew woke up undead.

First there were the bite marks on his neck. Then he tried to eat garlic...yikes! And now he's got this weird urge to sleep upside down.

Not that Andrew minds turning into a vampire. He'll be able to stay up all night, fly, and scare his sister silly. Cool!

But then Andrew meets his vampire teacher, one really scary guy.

Andrew isn't ready for a lesson on how to sleep in a coffin -- or how to drink blood!

But does he have a choice?

About the Author

How to Be a Vampire 1

“Let’s move it, Andrew,” Emily said to her brother. “I have tons of homework.”

“Wait,” Andrew whispered. “Just a second.” He glanced around Shadyside Park. It was almost dark. They needed to stay only a few more minutes. Only until it was really dark. That’s when they all came out. Everyone knew that.

Emily brushed a strand of her wavy red hair off her face. “Not just a second,” she insisted. “Now.”

Andrew couldn’t stand it when Emily got bossy. She was only twelve and a half. Just a year older than he was. So what if she was a head taller? Did that give her the right to be Emily Griffin, Know-It-All?

Here’s what really killed Andrew: Emily thought she was perfect! She thought she was so good at softball. So smart. She thought she had a million friends. Plus she always bragged about her great taste in clothes. Personally, Andrew thought she looked like a moron, running around school in her little pleated skirts and stupid fake pearls. But here was the biggest joke of all—Emily thought she was gorgeous!

Andrew knew he wasn’t great looking. He was skinny. His hair was somewhere between brown and red. His eyes were plain old brown. He had a million freckles. But so what? Big deal. At least his nose wasn’t stuck up in the air like Emily’s.

“I must be losing it,” Emily was muttering. “Why did I let you talk me into getting off the bus at the high school? It’s a fifteen-minute walk home, at least. If I’d stayed on the bus, I’d be in my room now—halfway finished with my homework.”

“Shhh!” Andrew said. How could he hear anything coming with her jabbering like that?

“Let’s go!” Emily insisted. “Move it, Android.”

Andrew made a face. Emily thought she was so clever when she called him “Android.” But he had to let it go now. Keep his mind on other things. Important things. He started walking. His feet crunched the leaves on the path around the pond.

“Right now is when they wake up,” he told his sister.

Emily frowned. “Who’s they?” she asked.

“The creatures of the night,” Andrew answered. He tried to sound mysterious. Maybe that would make her stop.

“What are you talking about?” She kept walking. “Owls?”

“Not owls,” Andrew replied. “The undead. Vampires. See, the second day turns into night, they . . .”

“Andrew!” Emily shouted. “Stop! I don’t want to know what’s inside that diseased brain of yours.”

“But it’s true,” Andrew insisted.

“Nothing about vampires is true!” Emily scoffed. “They don’t exist!” She shook her head. “I keep telling you—you’re getting a little old for make-believe monsters.”

“Vampires aren’t make-believe,” Andrew said. “Real vampires have bitten real people in the neck. Really.” He fished a book out of the pocket of his jacket. “It says so right here.”

Emily snatched the book and read the title. “Vampire Secrets.” She groaned loudly. “I can’t believe I’m related to someone who reads this garbage!”

“It’s not garbage!” Andrew protested.

“It is too,” Emily said. “I read good books. I’ve read almost every book on Ms. Parma’s literature list in the library.”

Emily was always bragging about the big-deal books she read. Okay, they had big words. Andrew had to admit that. And they were as thick as dictionaries. But that didn’t make them good. That only made her backpack about ten pounds heavier than his.

“I don’t remember seeing Vampire Secrets on Ms. Parma’s list,” Emily went on. “Or that thing you were reading last week.”

“You mean The Mummies Are Coming?” Andrew asked. “That was totally awesome.”

Emily tossed Vampire Secrets back to Andrew. “Where do you get this trash anyway?”

“T.J. lent me this one,” Andrew told her.

“Why am I not surprised?” Emily rolled her eyes. “T.J. is the only person in the world who’s weirder than you are.”

“He is not!” Andrew protested.

Emily laughed. “Okay. Maybe you two are tied for weirdness. All you and T.J. ever talk about is monsters. No wonder neither of you has any other friends.” She began walking more quickly.

Andrew trudged along behind her. So what if he and T.J. loved talking about monsters? And reading monster stories? They were good. Really good. Emily didn’t know what she was missing.

“Walk faster, Andrew,” Emily commanded.

But Andrew kept stalling. He dragged his feet. If he took long enough, they might see a vampire. He thought they would.

Emily was heading for Division Street—and she was heading there fast. They’d never see a vampire on Division Street. The streetlights were too bright there. Way too bright for a creature of the night.

“Wait, Emily. I, uh, twisted my foot.” Andrew leaned against a big oak tree, gripping his ankle. Then he let out a small cry of pain, hoping Emily would be totally convinced.

“I’m not falling for that twisted-ankle story again.” Emily marched on. “You tried that one on me last week. Remember?”

Andrew sighed. He took a few steps. Then stopped.

Something dark and shadowy was creeping up behind Emily. Andrew watched as it dodged from tree to tree.

“Emily, stop!” he called in a hoarse whisper. “Something’s following you!”

Emily whirled around. “I’m not falling for any more of your stupid tricks, Andrew!” she warned him.

Andrew scanned the trees—and saw the figure.

A figure in a long, sweeping cape.

The dark form slid out from behind a giant oak, inching closer and closer.

“There he is!” Andrew shouted. “Behind you!”

“Yeah, right.” Emily stood in place with her hands on her hips.

The figure stepped silently up to Emily.

It hovered over her.

“Emily, I’m not kidding.” Andrew’s voice quivered. “Run!”

Emily shook her head in disgust.

The figure raised his dark hands.

“Emily! Run!” Andrew pleaded.

Too late.

Andrew watched in horror—as a pair of twisted fingers lunged for Emily’s neck.

"Dude, I can't believe your luck with women."

"That's not luck, my friend. That's an abundance of charm," Detective Diego Sandoval offered with a wicked grin. "And the simple fact that I love women."

And with a few painful exceptions, women loved him right back.

Something that came in handy when he was charming information, and a cast-iron frying pan, out of a three-hundred-pound mass of quivering fury.

"I've never seen anyone so pissed, though. When you arrested her old man, I thought she was gonna knock you on your butt. By the time you left, you had her ready to testify against the dirtbag, handing over evidence and offering to make you a bologna sandwich."

Diego shrugged. He was a cop. That was his job, his focus, his entire life. He did whatever it took to break a case. "Try chilling a woman down while she's aiming a sawed-off shotgun at your goods."

"Suspect?"

"Date."

Following Diego up the steps of the large brick building that housed the Central California Sheriff's Field Operations Bureau, Chris Carson shook his head. In admiration or in disdain, it didn't matter to Diego. He was all about the job and he devoted 100 percent to it. He didn't have time to worry about other people's opinions or doing the buddy thing. That's what made him one of the best.

"Someday, Sandoval, you're gonna meet a challenge you can't charm your way through," Chris said as they strode down the hall toward the patrol and investigation offices.

Diego's grin slipped a notch.

"Someday" had happened at birth. Diego had heard tell over the years about such a thing as motherly love, but he'd never experienced it himself. Hell, his mother had barely tolerated him. His learning to talk had been her breaking point. At three, he'd begun the loser shuffle between the rigid disapproval of his uncle Leon's house and the dismissive foster home's revolving door. Every couple of years, his mom would feel the guilt and haul him back. But those dance breaks never lasted.

No matter. That was then. Diego only cared about now.

"Most women don't need weapons," he told the younger man, leading the way through the bullpen. "Mother Nature made sure they were born armed and dangerous."

Before they reached Diego's desk, one of the other cops shouted his name.

"Captain called down a half hour ago, Sandoval. He wants to see you."

"Yeah?" Diego tossed his leather jacket over the back of his chair, then lifted the stack of file folders off the corner of his desk to find one that Chris had been looking for before they left earlier.

"Immediately."

The room chilled. Chris grimaced, glancing around for an escape route.

Diego flipped through folders anyway. He wasn't oblivious to the potential drama. He just didn't give a damn. The case was what mattered and he was sure he had one that tied in with the bust they'd just made. If Chris moved on it, they could nail this drug dealer for twice as long.

"I can get the file later," Chris muttered. "Kinnison hates waiting."

"He's waited a half hour. Two more minutes isn't going to matter."

The chill in the room turned antsy, nervous.

Diego kept right on flipping files. For a bunch of seasoned cops, these guys were way too intimidated by the new brass. Captain Kinnison had been on the job for three months, but it'd taken him only two weeks to institute a new order in the station house. An order heavy on rules, regulations and protocol. And politics. All things Diego didn't give a rat's ass about.

Something that hadn't earned him any points with his new boss. Despite that, though, word had come down two days before that he was up for a coveted transfer to the San Francisco Sheriff Department, complete with a promotion to Homicide.

For the most part, Diego was the cocky, lone wolf his uncle claimed him to be. One who didn't look for back pats, didn't see the promotion as a big deal. But a little, rarely acknowledged part of him was like a kid on Christmas who'd just found his secretly dreamed-of present under the tree—proof that while he might not be the favorite, Santa still thought he was on the right list.

The move to San Francisco was ideal. Fresno was getting claustrophobic, like the small towns Diego had hated when he was growing up. The promotion to Homicide validated everything he'd done, everything he was. And he was up for it because he was a damn good detective with the highest close rate in Fresno County. Not because of ass kissing and cronyism. Ironic that by insisting on doing things his way, he'd garnered a file full of commendations and a fast-track to big-deal promotion. He'd finally done something that disproved his uncle's and uptight cousins' assertion that he'd never amount to jack.

"Sandoval, in my office. Now."

The command was quiet. Intense. And seriously pissed.

"Good luck," Chris muttered, knocking a chair into Diego's desk in his rush to get away.

"Hey," Diego called before he could get too far. The deputy grimaced, shooting a quick glance over Diego's shoulder before taking the file folder he held out.

Diego tossed the rest of the stack on his desk, ignoring its precarious slide toward the edge. Then he turned to face the captain's stony stare.

"On my way, sir."

Diego had a brief vision of walking the plank toward a very large, very hungry shark. Then he shrugged it off. What was the worst the guy could do? Take a bite out of his ass? Diego stepped into the office. The captain, already seated behind his large desk, inclined his head toward the door. Shutting it behind him, Diego took a seat. Good. Ass bitings were always better done in private.

His face as hard as the oak of his desk, Kinnison didn't waste time with games.

"The D.A. has some issues with yet another of your cases, Detective Sandoval. Since we've had similar chats so often over the past few months, I'm sure you're aware of how much I dislike hearing that you didn't follow procedure. Again. By not playing by the rules, you've compromised the prosecutor's chances of getting a conviction. Again."

A dozen arguments ran through Diego's mind, but he clenched his jaw shut and waited.

"You threatened Geoffrey Leeds with—" the captain made a show of looking at the paper in front of him, even though they both knew he didn't need to "—an offer to wrap his large intestine around his throat and choke him with it."

"Offer being the operative word, sir," Diego pointed out.

"I didn't threaten. I offered."

"And the difference is?"

"He could have said no. He didn't have to tell me the details of the porn ring he and his buddies were running in the high school gymnasium."

Captain Kinnison's stare could have made a polar bear shiver. Before the older man hauled out his lecture on semantics—again—Diego inclined his head toward the file.

"Didn't the D.A. read the letter Leeds signed, stating that he was volunteering the information of his own free will?"

"He read it. But he feels, as do I, that the defendant might have signed under duress," Kinnison said, a small, tight smile puckering his thin lips. "Which puts yet another open-and-shut case in question, thanks to your methods, Detective."

Kinnison had no interest in hearing a defense, so Diego kept his mouth closed and waited.

The captain didn't make him wait long. He set the file down, then held up a letter. With the morning sun shining through the window behind Kinnison, the logo of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department was visible through the thin paper.

Diego tensed.

He'd seen enough of them to recognize a job assessment form.

"Detective Sandoval, you're up for a promotion and transfer."

Damn. Diego tried to tell himself that not getting the promotion wasn't a big deal. He wasn't looking for a ladder to climb. His ego didn't ride on outside kudos.

But, he acknowledged with an inner grimace, he wanted that job. Wanted the challenge of working Homicide. Wanted, intensely, to get the hell out from under Kinni-son's watch. Wanted it all so bad he could taste the bitter disappointment as he watched it slide out of his grasp.

"You have a strong record with the department," Kinnison mused, running the letter through his manicured fingers in contemplation. "Your peers respect you. The commissioner feels that your close rate is high enough to offset the cases lost by your roughshod style and disregard for regulations. Captain Ferris in SF Homicide is willing to consider your promotion based on my recommendation."

"But?" There was always a but.

"But there are some issues. The first being that you're not a team player. Add to that your lack of respect for protocol, your inability to follow orders and the way you blithely dance all over procedure. I can't, in good conscience, give you a positive evaluation."

Fury and frustration churned in Diego's gut. It was one thing to lose a promotion because he wasn't good enough, wasn't smart enough or just didn't have what it took. But to lose out because he didn't dot his freaking i's and put tidy crosses on his t's? Screw that.

"So you're going to, what? Withhold recommendation?" The mental image of Diego's uncle, wearing the same smug, arrogant expression as the captain, flashed through his head. The old man had always said that Diego's rebellious attitude would be his downfall. Maybe he should drop him a note, let him know he was still right.

"No. Denying you recommendation might be appropriate in this situation, but it wouldn't serve me in the long term."

In other words, while Kinnison would love to screw him out of the promotion as a punishment, he'd given u...

Nice and naughty
By Clare O'Beara
This light-hearted romp mixes minor crime with romance at Christmastime, reminding us that some people are NICE AND NAUGHTY at the same time.

Detective Diego Sandoval is being reprimanded for using verbal threats to get information out of criminals on his city beat. To make him cool it for a while, he is assigned to be the only police officer in the small town of Diablo Glen. Not only does he resent the move, he is ordered to play it by the book as he solves the ongoing rash of thefts. If he does, he may be promoted.

Jade Carson hangs decorations on her Christmas tree and wraps presents hoping that her wicked cat Persephone will not shred the lot. The feline has a history of vandalising Christmas decor... Jade's sisters Ruby and Beryl try to set her up with a blind date but she says that the empowerment courses she teaches mean she doesn't need a man. However this is a cover-up for the fact that Jade would indeed enjoy some male company, but as librarian in a small town knows everyone and does not find anyone single attractive.

The ongoing thefts of ladies' underwear are referred locally to as the Panty Thief and while people consider it just a prank, a crime like this could escalate into a sex crime or a homeowner could surprise the burglar and be harmed. So the town mayor has asked for an assigned police officer to deal with the matter. When Jade's lingerie drawers are rifled and her intimate apparel strewn around her home - and up trees outside - Diego arrives to inspect the crime scene and Jade finds the unattached city detective extremely hot. Studying her silk skimpies, Diego admits to himself that if he wasn't on duty, he'd like to examine more than the evidence.

This tale by Tammy Weber does not take itself too seriously and the cat Persephone is a great character, causing endless mayhem and distracting us from the serious matters in the sub-plots. I did find some parts dragged a little and the notorious cat should have been locked in a room rather than wandering loose to sabotage everyone's decorations, which could be dangerous if they were electrified. Two people with interesting lives are pushed together and we hope it won't be just for Christmas. A fine light read for lovers of romance and adventure.

This Book Delivers!
By LAS Reviewer
Life has made a renegade out of this hero and being a cop is a hard line to walk when rules, regs and a Captain who has it in for him all scheme to trip him up. Diego is tough, resourceful and is gritting his teeth at being roped in to toe the line. In a hick town no less. The hunky hero is about to find out that small towns can hide big things, like the key to his heart and a lust so huge it'll make him goofy.

I get the biggest kick out of a story that takes a strong, take charge and goal oriented man and pairs him with a woman who doesn't fit any mold of any female he's ever come across. Watching a sexy guy turn into Pavlov's dog whenever Jade turns her `green-eyed pixie' gaze on him was very entertaining. Realizing that Diego had a horrid childhood and is emotionally starved ended up being a strong lure to keep on reading through to the end. He's a person who has to control everything, is driven to succeed and will do anything to solve a case. As the hero falls in love for the first time in his life, he finds that solving the case isn't as engrossing or the top priority as it once was. But is it a good thing or a bad thing? It takes a while for him to figure that out.

Jade is adorable. In the beginning she seems all Suzy Sunshine. As with the sun, the clouds have to come by eventually and dampen the mood. That's a good way to describe getting to know the heroine. She's genuine and sweet but she has a few regrets, some unmet dreams and feels smothered by responsibility. What I liked was the volatile chemistry between Jade and Diego. It is the catalyst that brings Jade to life and it inspires her willingness to let go, to explore and spread her wings. It was great to watch.

The cat, Persephone, is the key. Imagining the antics that Jade's cat gets into around Christmastime and what it does to hapless decorations is one of the cutest and giggle-worthy elements in the whole book. It was a terrific touch and I thought the interactions between the kitty and Diego were wonderful. If there needed to be a little conflict and mayhem, Persephone was more than up to the task. What the cat did do was showcase the best points about both Diego and Jade in their reactions to caring for, chasing or rescuing said kitty.

There were wonderful human secondary characters too, like Mayor Applebaum. He sort of turned into the kind of father figure Diego probably wished he'd had but thought they really didn't exist. Then again there was that nasty woman at the library that's more in line with the city rat race that he was used to. Ms. Weber did an effective job in creating a character that I didn't like. How? That woman didn't like Persephone and one sentence she uttered was downright cruel. Boo Hiss.

Nice & Naughty has some quality hot-cha-cha going on between the sheets and anywhere else Diego can convince Jade to have a little fun. Because a lot of their coming together was spontaneous and combustible, I never knew when it was going to happen, but due to the strong writing skills that Ms. Weber employs, every scene was steamy, effective and fun.

Although the tug of war between his job/her job, his dreams/her dreams is a typical ploy, and the `how' of the opportunity to fix it all was a bit anti-climactic and predictable, those techniques didn't detract from this being an enjoyable read and worth spending time with. There were too many smiles and giggles and sweet and funny characters worth reading about to make me not mind.

Most of the story is internal conflict and personality issues between Diego and Jade. However, that's not all that lurks in the shadows. The author added in a surprise villainy that I never suspected. I enjoy a bit of suspense and drama because it heightens the emotions of both the main characters, and if done right, the reader too. Ms. Weber succeeded and it made the story that much better.

Nice & Naughty is a fun, enthusiastic romance between two characters that brought out the best in each other. It's not dark and dismal but bright, quirky and adorable except when the author wanted to shock a reader with the extent of the antagonist's treachery and criminal actions. Ms. Weber dropped clues here and there and only after the big reveal did I remember what I read and put the pieces together. Part of the answer was there all along but the biggest surprise came at the end. That was an amazing round up.

I recommend Nice & Naughty to any reader who is looking for a story that can make them feel happy, a bit flustered in a good way, and who likes a book peppered with good humor and witty dialogue. This novel delivers it all.

The $10 Trillion Prize: Captivating the Newly Affluent in China and India, by Michael J. Silverstein, Abheek Singhi, Carol Liao, David Mic

Meet your new global consumer

You’ve heard of the burgeoning consumer markets in China and India that are driving the world economy. But do you know enough about these new consumers to convert them into customers?

Do you know that:
• There will be nearly one billion middle-class consumers in China and India within the next ten years?
• More than 135 million Chinese and Indians will graduate from college in this timeframe, compared to just 30 million in the United States?
• By 2020, 68 percent of Chinese households and 57 percent of Indian households will be in the middle and upper classes?
• The number of billionaires in China has grown from 1 to 115 in the past decade alone?

In The $10 Trillion Prize, bestselling author Michael J. Silverstein and his The Boston Consulting Group colleagues in China and India provide the first comprehensive profile of the emerging middle class, primed to transform the global marketplace. Already the world’s biggest buyers of cars, mobile phones, appliances, and more, these consumers are eager for more products and services. In fact, it’s estimated that by 2020, consumers in China and India will generate about $10 trillion of total annual revenue for companies selling to them.

This book explains who these consumers are—what they buy and why, how they think and shop, and how their needs and tastes are changing. It takes you into their lives so you can better understand what they want and what they’re looking for.

Only by fully comprehending the forces driving this new generation of consumers will your company be able to capitalize on the opportunities their buying power represents. Insightful and backed by rigorous research, this book takes you inside the hearts and minds of today’s emerging Chinese and Indian consumers—both urban and rural, and across all income levels—positioning your company to win as the next wave of global affluence reaches the marketplace.

Paisa vasool
By B.Sudhakar Shenoy
During the last decade, several books have been written on the great economic potential of China and India, projecting them to be the engines of global economic growth of the twenty first century. Their huge population and a very low base of per capita income were indeed considered to be the very basis that would unleash unprecedented demand for all goods and services, to meet the needs of billions, thanks to the forces of global economic convergence.

While China opened up in 1979, India did so in 1991, and since then both these countries are marching ahead at great speed, in economic terms, compared to the rest of the globe. Global companies that had largely ignored these markets, suddenly realise that they need these markets very badly, not just for growth, but sometimes for their very existence in the transformed global market and value chain in the coming decades.

This book is an excellent work by BCG Consultants, based on in-depth research, feet on the ground approach to estimate the market size for goods and services in China and India in the current decade. As the title aptly says, the annual opportunity is $10 Trillion, by 2020. While China would account for $ 6.2 Trillion, India would be about $ 3.6 Trillion. Cumulatively it would exceed $ 60 Trillion for the decade.

To put this in perspective and to understand the opportunity, the lifetime consumption of a child born in India in 2009 would be 13 times that of his elder citizen born in 1960. This figure for China is a whopping 38 x.

The authors have done insightful analysis and excellent presentation of market segmentation based on per capita incomes of the super-rich, the growing middle class, the bottom poor, demographics, urban-rural consumption patterns, aspiration and key drivers that shape buying behaviour and the resultant demand.

Product sector analysis of how this huge demand would spread across different industry verticals - Food, Housing, Transport, Communication, Health care, Clothing etc., are discussed in detail.

The best part of the book is the finding and presentation that these countries need a very different kind of mind-set and business strategy to succeed. This means that mere replication of products and processes in the developed world are simply prescriptions for failure, for global giants in China and India. These countries need products that are ultra-low cost and multi functionality (called "paisa vasool" in India), innovative business processes and a frugal mind set. While western MNCs have highly advanced technologies and deep pockets and vast experience, reliance on their successful strategies in the West would be their proverbial Achilles heel in China and India.

Local competitors are Ambitious, Aggressive, Audacious and Adaptive to the hilt. These companies for example talk of 10x10, which means 10 times growth in 10 years, which might sound highly impossible and probably lunatic in the developed West. They have an Accelerator mind-set, and are PHD's (Poor, Hungry and Driven).

Scores of examples on strategies and case studies of successful local business giants as well as some western MNCs that have got the recipe right, is a reader's delight.

More than just the data on opportunity, this book presents the DNA for success in China and India.

To me, this book is absolute "Paisa Vasool", worth every penny, sorry, every paisa, since a penny can buy 55 paise at today's exchange rates in India. Penny is expensive in India. For real value, forget the penny and focus on every paisa. This concept is at the crux of this book.

In addition, I recommend the following books as essential reading to succeed in India.

1. " Reverse Innovation" by Vijay Govindarajan and Chris Trimble

Interesting Read
By marksgill
The $10 Trillion Prize is clearly bullish on China and India, but the optimism is not unfounded. The authors present a wealth of data to back up their assertions about the growth potential of these two consumer markets. On top of that, there are numerous and colorful anecdotes, like the one about a woman farmer in China who built a new house with a two-car garage even though she didn't own a car yet. Just goes to show the ambitions and anticipated purchasing power of the rising middle class in these countries. Well worth a read.

Get closer to the Chinese and Indian Consumer
By David W Olsen
A must read to help you truly understand the rising Chines and Indian consumer and how to win their hearts and minds. The first book I've read on the subject that delves deep into the motivations, wants and needs of the rising middle class in those countries. A great way to get up to speed and learn how to capture your share of the $10 Trillion Dollar Prize.

comprehensive coverage
By Donald G McGahan
This book can be judged by its cover!
This book is not frivolous with content. It does a reasonable job of presenting content that is relevant. It should be stated that it is weighted toward "Soil Taxonomy" (the US soil classification system). Learners and instructors of other systems may have need(s) to augment the text with the particulars of another classification systems details, if comparison and contrasts are warranted, or if another classification system is the primary focus.
For my uses, this text is the best that can be purchased as a supporting text used in an advanced soil course that has a signifiant amount of genesis and classification learning objectives.

Grandes obras
By fidel salgado

Damage Control: Stories, by Amber Dermont

"Dermont's short story collection, which follows her debut novel (The Starboard Sea, 2012), demonstrates the author's versatility and sardonic humor…Dermont delivers strong prose and intriguing characters who frequently defy stereotypical ideals…the overall effect is a tight collection that takes the reader in unexpected, often disconcerting, directions. Full of irony and contradictions, this compilation of contemporary short stories is a worthwhile effort."–Kirkus Reviews

A luminous collection of short stories focusing on privilege and entitlement, from the bestselling author of The Starboard Sea

Damage Control displays Amber Dermont's remarkable gift for portraying characters at crossroads. In "Lyndon," a daughter visits presidential landmarks following the death of her father. In "Damage Control," a young man works at an etiquette school while his girlfriend is indicted for embezzlement. A widow rents herself to elderly women and vacations with them as a "professional grandchild" in "Stella at the Winter Palace." And in "The Language of Martyrs" a couple houses a mail order bride on behalf of the husband's Russian mother.

Dermont's stories have previously been published in many literary magazines and have also been featured in anthologies edited by Jane Smiley and Dave Eggers. Damage Control includes three previously unpublished pieces.

From Booklist
A short story collection dwelling in the intersections of class, privilege, loss, and longing, Dermont’s Damage Control is infinitely readable and relatable. From the young girl determined to fulfill her father’s passion for presidential history by visiting important landmarks after his death, to the private trials of a young man who works at a southern etiquette school, the collection is packed with sympathetic protagonists in unsettling situations. Dermont has a talent for blending harshly realistic settings with fascinating narrators, and her eye for detail allows for immediate immersion in the story. The prose is terse and polished and should appeal to fans of Cristina Alger, Jennifer Close, and J. Courtney Sullivan. The stories “Lyndon,” “A Splendid Wife,” and “Afternoons in the Museum of Childhood” display Dermont’s narrative dexterity, while “Assembling the Troops” and “Notes toward an Anatomy of Pain” highlight the author’s commitment to different types of storytelling. The best-selling author has assembled an entirely gratifying collection full of both wit and humor but tempered by the harsh reality of ambition. --Stephanie Turza

Review

“Dermont...again impresses with her imaginative powers and cutting humor. Amid missed connections, unmet expectations, and things left unsaid, Dermont's gifted but damned narrators baldly articulate the pain and irony of finding themselves adrift in the seemingly beautiful worlds they inhabit. Dermont balances a proclivity for abstraction with a remarkable attention to detail, constructing a poetic tension between apathy and emotion that makes for an unsettling, provocative, and worthwhile read.” ―Elle

“[Dermont] seems to be able to throw down a convincing story set anywhere, spun from any premise. [She] is a deft writer, bullish on her characters, assertive in her descriptions of these specific worlds....As a guide to these stories we can simply rely on Dermont's desirous, tender driver of a narrator.” ―The New York Times

“[A] sparkling collection. Ms. Dermont's characters win us over with their stoic, even bemused, acceptance of disaster and abasement. In the collection's outstanding story, "Lyndon," a teenage girl loses her father in a freak accident ("My father died because our house was infested with ladybugs," is the irresistible opening line), discovers that her aristocratic mother has gotten pregnant six months into widowhood and comes down with an excruciating case of shingles, a malady usually confined to people "closing in on death." Her solution is a painfully funny road trip to the birthplace of Lyndon Johnson, a soulmate in fast-fallen fortunes. Despite that initial reflex toward mockery, Ms. Dermont succeeds in bringing out some of our finer feelings after all.” ―The Wall Street Jounal

“Dermont's short story collection demonstrates the author's versatility and sardonic humor...Dermont delivers strong prose and intriguing characters who frequently defy stereotypical ideals...the overall effect is a tight collection that takes the reader in unexpected, often disconcerting, directions. Full of irony and contradictions, this compilation of contemporary short stories is a worthwhile effort.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“Damage Control is a jangly, defiant and often darkly funny story collection that questions authority, skewers education and high society, mines the messiness of family secrets, and plucks oddities from the real world to bolster the verging-on-surreal situations the stories describe. Dermont's collection is crisp, efficient, barbed.” ―Houston Chronicle

“With unflinching wit, Amber Dermont examines the harsh vicissitudes of life, and though the worlds she creates are often unsettling places, her sense of detail always makes for a pleasurable read. There is a vibrant lucidity to her language, a daring music.” ―Marilynne Robinson, Pulitzer Prize– and Orange Prize–winning author of Gilead and Home

Fourplay
By David R. Anderson
Amber Dermont's generous collection of stories, fourteen in all, showed up in the March 24 issue of the New York Times Book Review as worthy of note among a host of books "written by first or second time authors ... new to the scene..." I chose it among the others because because twelve of the stories are written in the first person. And so they are, several by sexually self-confident women, ages fourteen and up, who know, or quickly learn their way around.

Take "Afternoon in the Museum of Childhood" for example. Amanda, fifteen years old when she tells the story, sets the stage by telling us that, "More than nine months ago, I was abducted from our home in the desert. She escapes, her abductor, she calls him "Messiah", is arrested and imprisoned awaiting trial while Amanda's parents take her to Scotland -- they are related to Robert Louis Stevenson -- to recover from her traumatic experience. But was it? Her Mom wants to know, but Amanda isn't telling. But she wants her mother to understand That I was quiet, studious, and desperate to do wrong" before she was taken.

Genie, the twenty-six-year old narrator of "Sorry, You Are Not a Winner", sexually accomplished by the summer between her junior and senior years in high school, makes her living cleaning apartments for the nouveau riche. Mainly bachelors, but never professional women because they "feel guilty about hiring help, and in turn, compensate for their guilt with criticism." Matt, her "accidental fairy godfather" who has "set me up with my own roster of cleaning clients," is an off and on lover. When he learns that his date for a big party Genie is helping him prepare for can't make it, he asks Genie to step in. She does. And how, she is the runner-up in the Connect Four contest (see end note), defeating Matt's current lover in the process, and steals the show in other ways.

"Number One Tuna", told by a man required by circumstance to live with his college roommate's astounding and rapid climb to the near top in Hollywood, pivots on the useful insight provided at the outset: "Malcolm and I stayed in touch only because each of us was privately convinced that the other deserved to fail." It's a good line, a grabber, one that makes you want to read the story. It hit home because it took years for my first college roommate and me to get over the ideas we harbored about which one us held the better cards.

Sometimes you learn as much about an author by reading the acknowledgements as you do the thumbnail biography on the jacket flap. Dermont's list of those she feels indebted to includes, among many others, Dave Eggers, Antonya Nelson, James Alan McPherson, Andre Dubus III and (the late) Barry Hannah. Anyone who thinks writing stories comes easy would do well to consider how many mentors ago it was that Dermont wrote her first good story.

End note, Connect Four, the American version of the game of pas tempe (to pass the time) played by French brandy vintners as they waited out the tedious processes involved, can be played on-line against a computer. I tried, it's fun, it's free and it's hard going. I wonder if Dermont knew, and chose not to refer to it, by one of its other names, "fourplay." It would have suited the action.

Fresh, compelling, and entertaining stories by a really talented writer...
By Larry Hoffer
In the hands of a talented writer, short stories can have almost a transcendent quality, an ability to transport you into the minds of unique characters and memorable situations. I was a huge fan of Amber Dermont's debut novel, The Starboard Sea (in fact, it was one of my favorite books I read last year), so I was excited to read her new short story collection, Damage Control. And after reading the 14 stories in this collection, I was pleased to see that her writing ability continues to grow, and her career is definitely one I will continue to follow.

The characters in Dermont's stories don't follow one particular pattern--some are overly confident while some are unsure of themselves, some are lucky in love while some fight to find it. I really enjoyed nearly every story in this collection--some made me laugh, some made me think, some even made me slightly emotional, but each has remained in my mind, which I've often said is one of the hallmarks of a great writer.

Among my favorite stories were The Language of Martyrs, in which a woman tries to outsmart her boyfriend's mother but realizes that her motivations aren't quite what she imagined; Sorry, You Are Not a Winner, which told the story of a former rich girl forced to work as a maid while she cares for her ailing parents, but she never quite leaves her old mentality behind; Lyndon, in which a teenage girl and her mother take a trip to Lyndon Johnson's birthplace as a tribute to her late father; Afternoons in the Museum of Childhood, where a teenage girl who had been kidnapped by a man who called himself Messiah (a la Elizabeth Smart) deals with her life back home with her parents; and the title story, about a man who works at an etiquette school while his fiancée battles embezzlement charges and he battles scandals among the students.

A few of the stories were a little more experimental than I would have liked, but by and large, this is a tremendously entertaining and compelling collection. Dermont's voice is fresh and lively, and her stories are quite memorable. If you're a short story fan, this is a collection worth exploring. If you're not a fan of short stories, definitely pick up her novel The Starboard Sea. And remember--this author is one we'll be hearing about for a long time to come.

An assortment of pleasures
By Bookreporter
When asked to describe, in a 2012 interview, the "common thread" running through the 14 stories that comprise her first collection DAMAGE CONTROL, Amber Dermont replied that she is "interested in difficult situations people find themselves in and how they navigate them." That's an apt summary of the varied array of problems and challenges facing the characters in this robust, consistently original collection, one that reveals Dermont as a writer who is drawing on a deep well of talent first apparent in her widely-praised debut novel, THE STARBOARD SEA.

Many of the protagonists of Dermont's stories are teenagers or young women barely in their 20s. That's understandable because, as she acknowledged in the same 2012 interview, she's "really fascinated by teenagers and by the period of adolescence, because it's when you define yourself." Stories like "Lyndon," "Sorry, You are Not a Winner," "Notes Toward an Anatomy of Pain" and "The Master of Novices," among others, feature young women struggling to cope with actual or threatened loss. And yet there is such enormous variety in these stories there's no danger of the collection taking on a monochromatic cast.

Despite Dermont's preoccupation with young women, death is a persistent presence in these stories. Elise, the protagonist of the opening story, "Lyndon," is on a trip with her mother to the birthplace of the 36th president, continuing a pastime she had pursued with her late father. In "The Language of Martyrs," the narrator's parents survive several brushes with death from terrorist attacks on a trip to Israel and then both die of a "mortal tear in the heart muscle" on the flight home. Eugenia, who doubles as a cleaning woman and occasional lover of her boss, Matt, must attend to a father afflicted with a brain tumor and a mother dying of alcoholism in "Sorry, You Are Not a Winner."

Among the many strong stories, there inevitably are standouts. The title story takes place in and around Houston's "Sis and Hasty Breedlove School of Southern Etiquette," where working-class teenage boys are recruited to help teach the social graces, "nothing less than the grammar of living," to their often sullen female contemporaries. Martin Foster, the 28-year-old man who runs the school, claims his "line of work is more dangerous than most people suspect." He's in a relationship with the Breedloves' daughter, who's facing criminal charges in a corporate financial scandal. That's only the first of the story's multiple complications.

For anyone who thinks even the best fiction can't compete with true stories of kidnap victims like Elizabeth Smart, "Afternoons in the Museum of Childhood" provides an emphatic rebuttal. Its 15-year-old narrator has accompanied her parents from Arizona to Edinburgh as part of the process of recovering from her capture by a man who calls himself "Messiah." Dermont masterfully portrays a young woman trying to sort out her complex feelings about her ordeal and the man responsible for it. "I miss my disappearance," she says. "I was never so important as when I was gone." Despite her psychologist-mother's efforts to convince her that she's the same girl she was before the kidnapping she recognizes that "something bad did happen, and I feel as though I'll spend the rest of my life searching for more bad things to come."

While it would be inaccurate to characterize Dermont as an experimental writer, in a couple of stories she does depart from more conventional structures. "Assembling the Troops," one man's story from the playground, "where you cultivate your future," to early middle age when he concludes "You kidded yourself that you were the man with a plan," is a second-person narrative assembled from single-paragraph fragments that feels reminiscent of a Lorrie Moore story. "A Splendid Wife" is a tongue-in-cheek crime story, recounting the effort of a detective who has lost his own wife to suicide to account for a series of disappearances of New Jersey women married to health care professionals who have a preference for Dodge Vipers.

Dermont has a striking talent for attention-grabbing first sentences: "My father died because our house was infested with ladybugs." ("Lyndon"). "Malcolm and I stayed in touch only because each of us was privately convinced that the other deserved to fail." ("Number One Tuna"). "The second wife vanished five days after the first wife, late on a Sunday morning." ("A Splendid Wife"). "When the baby fell out of the car, she bounced twice." ("The Order"). These openings aren't mere gimmicks, because she uses them so effectively to propel us into the story; what follows delivers on the promise of such aggressive beginnings.

DAMAGE CONTROL is an apt title for a collection that deals with a diverse group of characters trying to minimize the harm they've inflicted on themselves and that's been wreaked by others. It's the work of an enormously talented writer, one that offers an assortment of pleasures for anyone who appreciates smart short fiction.
