JOCELYN ZICHTERMAN is an abuse advocate and whistleblower fighting against the IFB Church. Zichterman was a critical source and interview for the ABC News 20/20 investigative hour Shattered Faith as well as the "Ungodly Discipline" series featured on CNN's Anderson Cooper 360. She has also been a source for The New York Times and The Huffington Post, among many other publications. Jocelyn lives with her husband and eight children.

Not at all the bitter rant I was expecting - incredibly relatable and a wide variety of IFB experiences similar to my own.

I almost didn't buy this book because of some of the reviews insinuating the author's rejection of God and truth but, I'm so glad I did.

From the first chapter I was drawn in. I have read many blogs and one other book recounting a woman and her family leaving fundamentalism, but never before have I read the account of someone who was raised in the exact same circles as I. My fundamental experience (from 1987 to 2012) includes everything from Pearl, Doug Phillips, Doug Wilson, Gothard, and that side of things - as well as strong ties with BJ, Northland, the Wilds, Patch the Pirate, and others. (My family of origin went from one extreme to the other, but in the reverse order of Jocelyn's).

Her name was familiar, but after Googling my jaw dropped as I pulled out my Majesty hymnal and Wilds songbook and realized I had grown up loving and singing the songs written by her husband. I was practically weaned on them. The "name dropping" that she apparently is so guilty of was incredibly helpful to me - in a very surreal and chilling way - having heard the vast majority of the men mentioned speak on one occasion or another at camps, Bible conferences, colleges, etc.

Her recounting of the lyrics of songs I grew up singing cast a far different light than I have ever considered them in - which was eye opening and chilling.

While I did not experience the physical or sexual abuse that she did, as graphic as the accounts were, I wasn't surprised to find out that this stuff went on. The older I get the more I realize that this stuff was rampant.

Her accounts of meetings with "superior" fundamentalists at Northland and the way they accused her on more than one occasion reminded me of spiritual abuse I endured in a meeting at a smaller Bible college when I became a "discipline problem" for a minor infraction.

Her explanation of the politics within the greater IFB movement was spot on, although not entirely complete, hence the 4 stars.

I believe that the author is accurate in her claims as far as her experience goes, but my experience was more far-reaching than hers and I was exposed to even more sub-sects within the greater IFB movement, having attended other colleges (Ambassador Baptist College, Maranatha Baptist Bible College, New England Baptist College) and having been exposed to others like Crown College, Heartland Baptist Bible College, West Coast Baptist College, and more over the course of my fundamental experience.

To suggest that, invariably, "all roads lead to BJU" is accurate in the sense that BJ is by far the oldest IFB college and the spearhead of the movement; yet it is inaccurate in that by now, there are so many spin-off factions within the IFB movement that have little to no association with BJU. (I grew up in several BJU churches but after my family was spiritually abused and accused, we left and jumped shipped to another faction of IFB that actually mocked, ridiculed, and even called heretical the teachings of BJU, opting for even more conservative ideals like Gothard, SM Davis, and patriarchy). The way she describes her family's move from one camp to another like switching mob families was both genius and a fairly accurate representation of the greater movement.

Other than the graphic physical and sexual abuse, I found nearly every word of this book to be relatable, as though I was looking back over my past with fresh eyes. Nearly everything she describes as far as dogma, "standards," "convictions," etc, I was either exposed to, taught, and/or personally believed at one point or another during my experience with fundamentalism. (Although definitely not all at the same time. As I mentioned above, different sub-sects within the greater IFB movement subscribe to different delineations of dogma - hence some of the other reviewers saying that their experience didn't include much of what Jocelyn says she was taught. In that sense, yes, there is some over-generalization in this book.)

Jocelyn's accounts of leaving the church and her own personal recovery (including experimenting with drinking, smoking, and swearing) were painfully honest and relatable. While I may not have made the same kind of choices, I found myself thinking that had I endured the kind of abuse that she did, I would probably be in that place right along with her. So, no judgment from me, even though those portions were hard to read.

I am not sure that I completely agree with her desires to see more government intervention in schools, her beliefs about pro-choice and pro gay-marriage, but her words seriously made me think and I understand where she is coming from. Honestly, a lot of what she said made sense, even though I would have never dared to say such things until very recently (not even a year ago).

I wished I could have heard more of her personal story since coming out of IFB - not just her stances on big issues (which she covers well), but how she personally feels about God and the kind of relationship she has with him now. I never got the feeling that she has rejected God (so don't let the reviewers capitalizing on her last sentence deter you from reading), but rather that she just wasn't quite ready to talk that personally about it - and I get that. This journey is difficult and full of ups and downs and doubts and so much more than can be put into a book.

All in all, I am beyond grateful that Jocelyn wrote this book. I find her bravery and vulnerability not just admirable but...heroic. The way she has championed the cause to expose abuse within the IFB movement is something that someone needed to do. I still haven't gotten to the point that I could be so brave. I blogged much of my own experience last year (see beautifulinhistime.com) but nearly lost the relationship that I had with my parents over it and have remained silent since. This review is my first time speaking out since then, and I don't dare put it on my blog for fear of someone finding it.

I think that everyone, especially those either on their way out of IFB or having recently left IFB, should read this book. In fact, I think everyone within IFB should read it, but the very title is damning enough that it would never be aloud on IFB shelves.

This book made me cry, gave me nausea, gave me an anxiety attack, disgusted me, gave me chills, made me feel like my own past was a nightmare - and yet comforted and encouraged me and made me feel so much more okay and totally not alone in my journey - all at the same time.

So Jocelyn, if you can stand reading your reviews - I hope you read this one. If I ever get to meet you, I just want to hug you. Because you are one of my newest heroes and I will never forget reading your book. So thanks.

The evil that men do in the name of God.

This book needs to be read by everyone who cares about God and Christianity.

It details the abuse and evil perpetrated in the name of God by a group of people who have sold their souls to a group of men ( all men, since they despise and subjugate women) who love titles ( so many fake "Dr." titles from the very top guys down to the most ignominious cretin pastor and heads of "Bible" colleges) and power.

The author makes clear that the International Fundamental Baptist church racket has nothing to do with the many positive, Evangelical Christian churches and schools. In fact, it was loving and honest Evangelical Christians from these other schools ( ie. those not associated with Bob Jones University and its many subsidiaries) that helped her escape from the cult.

I commend the author for having the courage to break away from this evil cult. After having gone through physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her father, Bart Janz, who sadly is still a pastor ministering to his brainwashed followers in rural Colorado, she escaped from the cult. Her father pursued her, threatening her with bodily harm and even had the gall to sue her after her children detailed his sexual abuse of them.

She was approached by 20/20, Oprah and other national news groups following the exposure of the rape of a 15 year old girl at a cult church in Concord, NH. The pastor of the church actually condemned the girl and cursed her in front of the entire congregation. So much for Christian understanding and love.

Subsequently, this incident helped break the dam and over 12,000 cult members contacted the author at her Facebook page detailing their own incidents of abuse at the hands of these "God-fearing" cult leaders and members.

The book details many more cult pastors and ministers who have been found guilty of physically abusing their members. One pastor was jailed for advocating beating infants who cried, saying that they needed to have the Devil beaten out of them.

It seems, according to the author, that this cult, which is built around the discredited institution Bob Jones University and its many look alike " Bible colleges", runs a nationwide network of churches and schools which use religion to perpetrate one of the greatest scams on their members and communities. All tax free and simultaneously sucking off of the public tit while simultaneously denouncing it as "socialistic".

This says it all, I guess. As the Communists say, The means justifies the ends. Anything is OK as long as it advances their sick agenda.

There is not one trace of the teaching of love and Spirit of Jesus to be found in this cult as the book details.

The hypocrisy of these people is beyond belief.

Read the book and educate yourself.

Shining yet another damning light on the unbiblical IFB movement

Over thirty years after Robert Sumner wrote "The Saddest Story I've Ever Told," it's astonishing that the IFB continues to destroy tens of thousands of lives and shame the cause of Christ. Jocelyn (and Joseph) joins the growing list of people who are courageous enough to break free from the strong gravitational pull of the IFB and expose it for the unbiblical, ungodly system it is. Their story has, sadly, happened thousands of times over in hundreds of churches and dozens of "educational" institutions around the country that they didn't even mention!

As a former member (and aspiring preacher boy) of the IFB movement, I experienced many of the same incidents with regards to IFB leadership and doctrine. My primary experience was with the Jack Hyles-strain of IFB, but I lived in NE Wisconsin for a few years and have actually met many of the people mentioned in the book.

My only criticism of the book is that Jocelyn advocates for federal government oversight to solve the problems. Given what she and her siblings endured, I completely empathize with her reasoning, who couldn't? At the same time, making federal or state government the final arbiter is simply trading one set of corrupted (and corruptible) bullies for another. The solution is to continue exposing IFB institutions and perpetrators, standing up to their attacks, and prosecuting these people to the fullest extent of existing law.

If you've escaped from the IFB, this book will aid in your healing process. If you are close to someone who's escaped from the IFB, this book will help you understand where they come from. If you're in the IFB and want to get out, read this book.

Sadly, the people who need to read this will reject it, as well as persecute anyone who reads it (though they don't know what it says because they won't read it, ironically).

About the Author

H. Samy Alim is Associate Professor of Education and (by courtesy) Anthropology and Linguistics at Stanford University, where he directs the Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Language (CREAL) and the Institute for Diversity in the Arts (IDA). Some of his most recent books include You Know My Steez, Roc the Mic Right, Talkin Black Talk, and Global Linguistic Flows. He has also written for various media outlets, including The New York Times, Al-Ahram Weekly (Cairo), and The Philadelphia New Observer, among others.

Geneva Smitherman is University Distinguished Professor Emerita of English, Co-Founder and Core Faculty, African American and African Studies, and Core Faculty, African Studies Center, at Michigan State University. She is a pioneering scholar-activist in the struggle for language rights and for Black Studies. Her list of books includes Talkin and Testifyin, Discourse and Discrimination, Black Talk, Talkin That Talk, Language Diversity in the Classroom, and Word from the Mother.

Amazing book and great review of Obama's language use and AAE

Alim and Smitherman give a great overview of some of the contemporary issues in the study of African American English. Through the lens of Obama's language, they explore the intersection of race, class, and culture in the modern U.S. Amusing and lighthearted while maintaining its academic street cred, the book is highly recommended for scholars of language, race, and political science. Politics, Rhetorical study, and Race

The book forwards a new perspective the language and attitudes that remain pervasive elements of racial and political prejudice. But it also offers much needed commentary on the rhetorical savvy of Barack Obama and it's influence on an increasingly diverse audience of constituents.

An Excellent Addition for Linguists, Anthropologists, and Students Alike

This is an increadibly well written book. It views and analyzes "Black language" through a dual analysis of AAVE and President obama's use of language--both AAVE and SAE. The langauge the authors use transitions fluidly from AAVE to SAE and back, providing the reader with an in depth experience of both dialects through the utilization of bidialectism and code-switching, a technique that further expresses the analysis of languge. It is an excellent addition to the library of linguists, langauge students, and those involved in race/ethnicity studies.

For those not faimliar with these fields, this book is very accessible. One does not need a lot of experience in linguistics or anthropology to understand the content or terminology the authors use. Their examples are relatable and often taken from the media (most of their examples can be viewed/heard on youtube), so, even if one is not familiar with certain examples given about Obama or other individuals discussed within, it would be very easy to find them.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone already involved in or interested in learning about AAVE language studies or langauge studies in general.

Families of the Jailed is a well written and "divinely inspired" work of art that can benefit both inmates and their families. I found this book in our local library and bought a copy to send to a friend in jail and another to send to a friend in the prison ministry. I hope it never goes out of print.

I FEEL THE TITLE IS MISLEADING. I WAS EXPECTING STORIES OF FAMILIES WHO HAVE SOMEONE IN JAIL. IT DIDNT HAVE ANY! IT MOSTLY DEALT WITH A RELIGIOUS ASPECT OF HOW TO COPE WITH THE SITUATION. I WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED.

Excellent Reference that You'll Read from Cover to Cover

I'm a new massage therapist, but have received many hot stone massages over the years. Some were wonderful, but others were uncomfortably hot in some areas of my body or just plain painful until I alerted the therapist to my feelings. If I follow the advice in Leslie Bruder's book, I can avoid those issues in my own practice.

Ms. Bruder doesn't just give sterile how-to advice -- she tells you how, of course, but also explains why certain techniques work best for the client and for the therapist. And it's obvious that she is writing from deep experience.

I would be here all day if I tried to outline the information you'll gather from this book. I'll take the short route and simply say, buy it if you want an in-depth text on hot stone massage. You won't be sorry.

Amazing!

Incredible! As a massage therapist, I found this book totally amazing.
Not only does it teach Hot Stone work, but hot stone work married to a three dimensional, heart-centered massage technique. The stones become wonderful extensions of the body -- allowing for profound work. The massage moves themselves are out of this world, and then adding the stones
simply increases the effects a thousand fold. The details of choosing stones, working with them, keeping them at the right temperatures, knowing when they should be used, and when not to use them -- all this is covered in very readable language, approachable by the novice as well as the experienced bodyworker. And, SO MANY beautiful and helpful photos!
I can't imagine how wonderful it would have been to have been the "model"
in all those shots! In short, this is THE book about hot stone work.
It should be in every therapist's library.

Sierra is a good girl. She's in the leadership club, she makes good grades in her advanced classes, she is in an elite singing group. But when she accidentally brings her mother's lunch bag to school instead of her own, and finds a paring knife that her mother packed herself to use to cut her apple, she suffers from a "zero tolerance" policy on weapons.

Because Sierra is a good girl who follows the rules and respects them, she turns in the knife as soon as she sees the mistake. That sets the wheels in motion and she has to go to in school suspension as she awaits her expulsion hearing.

Of course while she's there, she gets a peek at how the other half lives -- those who aren't so "good," and it's an eye-opening experience.

I like the nontraditional take on tolerance and respecting others that sort of came about from that one. And of course it's a jab at "zero tolerance" policies. The novel had a strong school setting, which helps kids relate easily to the characters, a little romance on an age-appropriate level, and some fun hijinx.

RESERVATIONS: Sierra and others I think call the school secretary a b***h. Not once, not twice, but at least 3 times. I am not really comfortable with swearing in middle grade fiction, but especially swearing about an adult in authority? This really bothered me, in spite of the fact that it was an otherwise clever and clean book.

Zero Tolerance by Claudia Mills

The name of this book is Zero Tolerance by Claudia Mills, a writer who specializes in children's books, and has a Ph.D. in philosophy from Princeton. The publisher is Square Fish, who published this book on June 17, 2014. Claudia Mills scores a homerun with Zero Tolerance about a teacher’s pet turned criminal after one fatal moment. This book is targeted for young girls between the ages of 9-13.

Sierra, a teacher’s pet, is always very nice to the teachers, her classmates. One day Sierra accidentally brings her mother’s lunch to school which has a paring knife in it to cut an apple. Knives or any other kind of weapons aren’t allowed at the school. So she starts to panic. Sierra doesn’t know how to handle the situation because she never gets into trouble and usually never does anything wrong. Her friends tell her to hide the knife back in her lunchbox, but Sierra doesn’t think that would be right. She decides to turn it into the lunch lady who turns her into the front desk. Ms. Lin, the school secretary, who was very nice to Sierra that morning, treats Sierra like she would any other kid who purposely brings a weapon to school. Sierra is quite shocked to see this side of Ms. Lin, and she doesn’t like it one bit. Ms. Lin continues to treat her badly and becomes the only staff member Sierra has ever disliked.

As she waits for the principal, Mr. Besser, a boy named Luke Bishop, a big troublemaker who calls Sierra Shep-turd walks in, and waits for Mr. Besser as well. He is tries to see what Sierra is doing there, but she is too upset to tell him. Once Mr. Besser gets there he sets an expulsion hearing date for Sierra, but until then she has to go to in-school suspension because of the school’s zero tolerance policy where there are no weapons, drugs, or alcohol allowed.

Sierra’s parents are very angry with this and her father a respected lawyer, is going to represent her at the hearing. Her father tries to get the media involved in this case because he knows it is wrong and thinks that other people will think it is wrong too. In suspension she sits with Luke Bishop who is really surprised to see Sierra there because everyone knows Sierra is a big teacher’s pet and would never get in trouble. Luke turns out to be a nice guy, along with a few other people who are also in suspension. What will happen at the expulsion hearing? Will Sierra be expelled?

Overall this is a quality book, that has some silly scenes. This book also has some profanity, which is not appropriate for younglings. I would give this book a 4 and a half out of 5.

Zero Tolerance by Claudia Mills was published in June 17th, 2014 by Square Fish. It is the reprint edition. The original publish date was June, 2013. She has written book series like ‘Mason Dixon’ and ‘Gus and Grandpa’. This book is about learning what is right and wrong.
In this realistic fiction set in fairly present day, Sierra Shepard is a smart girl who is on the honor roll, leadership club, and choir. That is, she used to be, after accidentally bringing a knife to school and turning it in, she is sent to the suspension room for the whole next week of school waiting for her expulsion hearing. There she meets Luke Bishop, the almost exact opposite of her. He does whatever he wants and whenever he wants. He’s in the suspension room for fighting and swearing at a teacher.
Claudia Mills was born on August 21st, 1954, in New York City. writing at a young age mainly writing poetry. She first began publishing for the Four Winds Press in New York City. She has one younger sibling.
What I like about this book is that it is creative in ways of showing the theme. Like how it explains that in the office there’s a banner and on that banner is the word ‘Responsibility.’ The ‘R’ in ‘Responsibility’ is crooked. This crooked ‘R’, shows up in the beginning, once in the middle, and once at the end. I also like how there’s a small love story with Sierra having a crush on a boy named Colin but the book isn’t focused completely on it. I also like how the book just shows how one week can change a person’s life and how one mistake can come bite you in the butt whether it be immediately or later on in life.
So I thought Zero Tolerance was a well written and creative. It will get your thoughts going on while reading. Overall a good book. Just watch out for the ‘b’ word. It’s said there a few times.
