Do you ever wonder why Jeffrey talks all of the time?
Or why Toni can't sit still? Or why Alex loves work sheets?
Or why Jordan is always trying something new?

Each chapter is fun to read, stimulating, and immensely practical. This book is valuable to teachers, and for preachers, too.

DAVID R. MAINS
DIRECTOR, CHAPEL OF THE AIR

It's about time. Creative Teaching Methods is not just another book on the theory of creativity (which we don't need). Rather, it is a book on the practice of creativity in the classroom (which we desperately need). This is a book you will use over and over again.
Creative Teaching Methods is loaded with practical and usable ideas that will make creative teaching a reality in your classroom. Without hesitation, I would recommend this book to anyone who teaches young people or adults.

MIKE YACONELLI
PRESIDENT, YOUTH SPECIALTIES

Marlene LeFever makes the principle of learning through creative participation come alive for Christian education. Creative methods are vividly and invitingly explored for their potential for deepening the spiritual life through new ways of hearing the Word of God and using heretofore untapped personal resources in responding to it. Unique in its assumption that in Christian education creativity is just as essential in work with youth and adults as it is in work with children.

D. CAMPBELL WYCKOFF
PROFESSOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION EMERITUS, PRINCETON THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY

Marlene D. LeFever is Manager of Ministry Relations for David C. Cook Church Ministries, holds a master of Christian education and is a frequent speaker at Sunday School conventions, writers' conferences, and professional organizations. Editor of Teacher Touch, a quarterly letter of affirmation for Sunday School teachers, Marlene has authored over ten books, including Creative Teaching Methods (Cook), Creative Hospitality (Tyndale), and Is Your To Do List About To Do You In? Great book to help teachers to think creatively in differentiating instruction.
By Justin Smith
This book was a great work to help ministers and teachers alike to start thinking of the benefits of creativity in teaching and delivery. While the chapters containing specific ways to foster creativity through means of drama, stories, and other method are helpful and provide a number of good ideas to get teachers started, the true gold od this book is found in the opening chapters. LeFever's explanation of the need for creativity and the steps necessary to create new ideas are fantastic and worth the price of the book by themselves. Rather than viewing this book merely as a handbook or guide of methods, as it is often treated in seminaries and teaching programs, this books is best taken as a challenge to differentiate educational methods with a number of examples to help the teacher get started. Enjoy!

Middlemarch, by George Eliot

"Middlemarch" by George Eliot, one of the masterpieces of English fiction, is set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch.
It has multiple plots with a large cast of characters, and in addition to its distinct though interlocking narratives it pursues a number of underlying themes, including the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism and self-interest, religion and hypocrisy, political reform, education, class climbing and sinking, love and marriage. Despite the fact that it has some comical characters, "Middlemarch" is a work of realism. Through the voices and opinions of different characters we become aware of various broad issues of the day: the Great Reform Bill, the beginnings of the railways, the death of King George IV and the succession of his brother, the Duke of Clarence (King William IV).

Wonderful, compelling book
By Shelby Miller
I took up this book because it was on a booklist of the 100 best books written, and I have to agree. It took awhile to get into it because there's a great deal of expository writing at the beginning, but stick with it and you'll be introduced to some fascinating characters in the town of Middlemarch.

Dorothea Brooke is a young woman about to take a much older husband, determined to find purpose in her life by assisting him with his life's work, a book which is to a definitive guide to all the mythologies of the world. When she begins to suspect her husband's work is little more than empty piffle, how will she find her way?

Mr. Lydgate is a hotshot young physician determined to do great works from the small town of Middlemarch. Thwarted by small town suspicion and politics, and increasingly saddled by debt incurred by a pretty young wife, how will he cope as his life's dream slips away?

Fred Vincy is the son of a town merchant determined to see him made a gentleman. He's paid for Fred to recieve a gentleman's education at Oxford with the intention that Fred will join the Church. Fred knows the Church isn't for him, but isn't sure what else to do, nor how to tell his father his education was for naught.

These are just three of a huge cast of characters, all of them fascinating in their own way as their lives intersect. The book feels more like a documentary than a novel, and you grow to feel as if the characters could be your own friends and neighbors. Highly recommended, I know this is going to be one of my favorite books.

My opinion? This is the greatest novel written in English
By Joanna Daneman
Yes, that is a strong statement, but I believe Middlemarch to be the best novel written in English. And English is a rich language, overflowing with worthy works from both sides of the Atlantic, India and beyond. The only novel as a close contender on my list is Jane Eyre, with its fearsome symmetry and romantic passion.

George Eliot has been the bane of students everywhere who suffer reading Silas Marner in high school. But later on, you, like me, may develop a taste for the classics and this book will reward you richly.

The story is about Dorothea, a young, idealist woman, born to a good family with a modest fortune of her own. She is a prime catch on the wife market--money, family name, good looks. Her parents are deceased and her friends and uncle seek to pair her up with a local baron as the ideal mate. But Dorothea, bookish, religious and dreamy, has other ideas. She chooses, instead, a superannuated cleric who finally decides to marry as he feels mortality and ill health upon him. Casaubon, the vicar of a nearby rural church is a good match except....he's old, ugly and what the heck is he doing marrying such a young beauty. But Dorothea, who's imagining a sort of superior father figure who could "teach you even Hebrew, if you wished it" wakes up to far less than a reality of marital bliss. And there's an added complication created by her unworthy husband that has dire consequences for the young Dorothea.

The subsequent examination of marriage as a partnership in hell is written with stunning modernity. Eliot not only creates the disastrous marriage of Dorothea to Casaubon, but also pairs, as a comparison, Lydgate, a doctor and his frivolous, vain, uncaring wife. The relationship of marriage to society is never more well drawn, but the internal suffering of people trapped in loveless marriage is written with sympathy and cunning insight. Eliot herself had a live-in relationship with Henry Lewes, who could not divorce his wife. She undoubtedly wrote from personal experience. The insight into human nature, such as jealousy, disappointment, recrimination, loss of trust and a feeling of desperation are themes that anyone who has ever been in a relationship will recognize as truth. If you find classic literature hard going, watch the mini-series created based on the book. Then, knowing the general plot, you might enjoy the structure and language of the novel more.

Amazingly funny and penetrating!
By Margaret Fiore
I have had a copy of this book on my shelf for years without reading it. It was so very thick, the print so small, the pages so thin! It looked dauntingly long and dull.
But when I finally picked it up out of a sense of obligation (after all, I majored in English, and it is a highly acclaimed classic) I was amazed to find myself laughing out loud on the very first page!
Dorothea, Eliot's heroine, is SO very earnest, SO idealistic and ardent! She would never be so tawdry as to fuss with her hair and dress, or wear (gasp!) jewelry in public! She is interested only in bettering the lives of the poor in their neighborhood (you could visualize her at the fore of a modern anti-war protest). But when her sister draws her into trying on their mother's old jewelry, the pure beauty of an emerald ring inspires her to decisively choose it as her own. And she stubbbornly ignores any inconsistency between that decision and her ideals.
But her idealism traps her into marriage with a man who is not at all what she believes. She sees him as a paragon of learning, questing the seas of knowledge with fearless curiousity. In actuality, he turns out to be a cautious and small-minded scholar, drily obsessed with minor points of criticism on others works. Poor Dorothea strives to find ways to hold constant in her love in the face of ugly truth. And when she meets young Will Ladislaw, a man of similar idealism and energy, she fights to stay on her moral high ground. Thank goodness the dry old scholar dies! But even after death, he manages to poison the possibility of Dorothea and Will ever making a life together.
Around this couple swarm their relatives and acquaintances, and others quests for their best lives. Each couple and each character is amusing and absorbing in their own way.
Eliot's characters are introduced and drawn so very well that each personality is fully believable and real. But beyond that, Eliot looks at all of them, the best and the worst, from a viewpoint of loving and gentle amusement. Her pithy comments are hilarious, but never malicious. She draws the reader into her own frame of mind, and invites us to look at the variety of our fellow humans with compassion and laughter.
In spite of its length, and several dizzy plunges into despair, this is a light and lively story, very readable and heartwarming.

Why Meditate?
No one has ever plumbed the depths of either the conscious or the subjective life. In both directions we reach out to Infinity.
Ernest Holmes
The Science of Mind
If you are reading this first chapter of this book, you have probably already asked the question, “Why meditate?” You might also have some ideas about why you want to explore meditation further. Maybe your friends have tried it and you’ve seen some beneficial changes in them. Perhaps your doctor has suggested that you find ways to relieve stress. You may have heard something about it in a class or workshop and decided to get more information. This chapter lists different reasons why people begin meditating, as well as the short- and long-term results you can expect from it.
The most basic result of meditation is an altered state of consciousness. Actually, this result is not difficult to achieve, as your state of mind changes from moment to moment anyway. With meditation, however, there is a certain direction that the alteration is expected to take: muscles relax, emotional states become more calm, the mind rests, blood pressure decreases, pulse rate declines, the eyes focus in a different way, breathing slows, and an awareness of sounds in the immediate environment may increase.
If you meditate for an extended period of time, you may become aware of the shifting angle of the sun coming in a window. Your awareness may extend to other people in the room, or to sounds outside the building. Some people have said they can tune in to the movement of the planet itself by lying still on the ground and looking up at the night sky.
If your only meditation goal is relaxation, you will meet a challenge. Yes, your muscles relax, your emotions become quiet, and your heart rate slows. You can achieve measurable stress reduction in this way. On the other hand, the chatter in your mind becomes more and more apparent as you become quiet. Also, after an extended period of sitting in a meditative posture, your muscles begin to rebel. You develop twitches, muscles begin to cramp if the posture is unusual, and you fidget. What is meant to be relaxing becomes uncomfortable―sometimes quite uncomfortable.
During extended meditation it is helpful to vary your technique. A period of sitting can be followed by a few minutes of walking to loosen up your muscles. You may think that ten minutes is a long time to sit still, and one minute of walking around is enough to flex and stretch. Often, people sit for forty-five to fifty minutes and walk for ten.
Meditation is not about how much time you put into it. Unless you live in a monastery or ashram, you probably don’t have many hours each day to devote to meditation. However, you do have shorter periods of time available. The following are some examples:
•After you come home from school or work and have prepared supper, use the fifteen to twenty minutes while your food is baking in the oven.
•When you are on a plane or train or bus.
•When you are getting a haircut.
•When you are waiting for an appointment.
•When you are in the dentist’s chair and waiting for the shot to take effect. (I know, this one will be a challenge for almost everybody!)
•When you are walking, running, or jogging.
•When you are painting, raking leaves, or doing other repetitive work.
By the same token, there are other times when your conscious attention needs to be given to what you are doing, and safety is an issue. Examples include:
•Driving a car
•Weightlifting
•Boiling or frying food
•Using any sharp implements
•Caring for children
•Crossing streets or roads
•Handling breakable objects
•Attending a lecture or performance
•Walking up or down stairs
•Moving furniture
These lists are not exhaustive, but they show that you can find meditative moments in your daily life. You don’t have to set aside hours of time. If you can, that may be helpful. If not, find short bits of time and make use of them each day. Meditation will help you become more clear and focused when you are engaged in those other activities that demand your conscious attention.
Meditation Goals
If your meditation goals go beyond relaxation, then you will want to experiment a bit to find methods that help you to achieve those goals. Don’t get me wrong, relaxation is an admirable goal in our stressful modern lives. In fact, it is essential to physical and emotional health. Still, you may have other goals for your meditation.
Insight
Insight is a time-honored goal of meditation. Eastern adepts and Western monks and nuns have spent years in meditation or retreat in order to discover their connection to the universal plan. Your personal goals are just as important
to you.
I will relate a story told to me by an elderly Episcopal priest. He had been a priest all his adult life. During the Lenten season he had undertaken a forty-day retreat, something most of us will never do. He had devoted his life to understanding the nature of God and to helping others. In a conversation with me concerning how we demonstrate our love of God and what we feel we owe God, he said, “You know, Stephanie, I have been a priest for over sixty-five years, and in these past weeks on retreat I have only now learned something about Him. God does not put us on Earth just so that we can love Him. He puts us here so that He can love us.” This simple statement changed my life. Since that conversation I have often remembered this, and I have occasionally shared it with people who seemed to need reassurance that we each are part of a larger spiritual plan.
Now, we are not all priests or monks and we cannot all go on extended meditation retreats. What we can do is take the moments we have to calm our minds. Then we can perceive our place in the universal plan more clearly. You may connect through the Goddess, through multiple gods, through vibrational methods, through scientific investigation, or whatever means suits you. You can devote as much time as you wish to your meditation goals. Personally, I have found that more is not necessarily better, but some is necessary. The pace of my life could easily prevent me from having the time to write, for example. I can always find something else to do. Brief moments of quiet allow me to formulate and reorganize my thoughts. Then I can sit down and put the words together.
When you have a complex problem in the work environment, you need to get away from it to get a different perspective and to let the details sort themselves out in a way that points to a solution. Meditation provides one means of this. Sometimes a walk around the block is enough to accomplish this task.
Regarding the practice of meditation, Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche has written:
Many people expect the result of meditation to come in a short space of time, overnight, so to speak, but this is not possible. It is a process of development wherein consistency is the key. If we practice every day, regularly, even for a short period of time, that will add to our development.1
Whatever your meditation goals, you can begin with just the simple act of sitting down and trying it. You don’t need any fancy equipment or clothing and you need not revolutionize your daily schedule. Eventually you may want to find a teacher or attend workshops, but for now all you have to do is begin.
exercise
beginning to meditate
Read through the exercise, then close the book.
1. Sitting comfortably with your hands in your lap, or standing in a quiet spot, look at the cover of this book.
2. Relax your eyes and simply look.
3. Allow your attention to examine the details of the book’s cover.
4. Continue doing this until you see something that catches your attention.
5. Then focus on why it caught your attention. Was it the color, the shape, the texture?
6. Refocus on the book’s cover, and continue for a few moments.
7. Does something else arise to take your attention?
8. Notice any connections you make between the book’s cover and your personal experience as you do this exercise.
Whatever arises for you is a bit of insight. It may not be the most profound insight you will ever experience, but it is insight. In the moments when we are not totally focused on the outer environment, or when we have a gap in our thought process, we allow insight to pop into our minds. You don’t need a huge gap, just a relaxed state and attention to the meditation process.
summary
The simple act of altering your focus can place you in a slightly altered state of mind. In fact, we alter our states of mind every moment of our waking (and sleeping) life. We are constantly processing information, relating it to what we already know, and storing it for future use. Usually we are not conscious of the process, but we enter an altered state from moment to moment to moment.
The next chapter introduces a few meditation postures and other meditation tips.

"...now close the book"
By A Customer
This isn't my way of telling you not to read the book. Meditation for Beginners is the only title that I've seen that tells you "read through the exercise, then close the book." Since I am not one long on patience, or someone who follows directions all that well, this advice is perfect for me. If you're new to meditation, you will soon learn that it isn't just the stereotype of chanting "om" in the most uncomfortable position possible. This book shows several types of meditation, such as using walking, mantras, cards, and dreams. Easily distracted? It's okay, part of meditation can be "thinking about thinking." Find the right posture and breathing that works best for you. Should your eyes be opened or closed? Many options are explored to help you find the best possible experience. Meditation for Beginners teaches you how to lock on to inner awareness, even if your thoughts show you being aware of nothing but distraction. This book will encourage you to move to the next levels of relaxation so you can ultimately reach a point of peace and visualization, it will surely lower your blood pressure.

great book on meditation
By Naveen Garg
This book makes you curious about meditation and then makes it easy for you to do it by giving very simple instructions.
The quote from frost's poem "mending wall" in this book is a great motivator to question yourself how meditation might make you think in new ways.
It also gives you examples from every day activities that are similar to its ideas of meditation. But it clarifies watching tv is not meditation, neither is highway hypnosis. It gives you techniques to make you more self aware when involved in these tasks. It also teaches you to concentrate when your mind wanders.
Easily one of the most efficient self help books available.

When she says beginners, she means beginners.
By KJ Colleen
I was dissapointed with this book, because it was exactly what I was trying to avoid. Clement falls into the same trap as so many other authors - they tell you when to meditate, why to meditate, who meditates - but never gives a good explanation on HOW to meditate. She never quite gets to the meat and potatoes of meditation. This is a good book to read if you've never heard of meditation - not one article, not one example of the experience - an absolute beginner. Otherwise, throw this junk aside. There are better, more complete guides available (such as "The Best Guide to Meditation" by Victor Davich).

Goethe's dramatic masterpiece
By Christopher (o.d.c.)
Goethe began FAUST during his Sturm und Drang period. Part One was completed in 1808, and he worked on Part Two until the end of his life. The influence of Shakespeare is pervasive- aspects of Hamlet, Macbeth, and the Midsummer Night's Dream have gone into the dramatization of this Gothic legend- the scholar who sold his soul in his quest for experience.

And it should be said, first of all, that this is a dramatic poem. Only a dramatic genius could give both Faust and Mephistopheles, as well as Gretchen and God Almighty, the Poet, the Theater Manager, and the Clown perfect expression:

Drum seid nur brav und zeigt euch musterhaft,
Laßt Phantasie, mit allen ihren Chören,
Vernunft, Verstand, Empfindung, Leidenschaft,
Doch, merkt euch wohl! nicht ohne Narrheit hören.
DIREKTOR: Besonders aber laßt genug geschehn!
Man kommt zu schaun, man will am liebsten sehn

Or how about this point-counterpoint: Is it worse to be forever wandering, "rastlos" like Faust, or stuck ("umfangen") like Gretchen with nowhere to go?

And yes, the play is funny as well as tragic. Here is the Devil getting fed up with the goings on at the witches' sabbath:

... Nur fest an mir! sonst sind wir gleich getrennt. Wo bist du?
FAUST (in der Ferne): Hier!
MEPHISTOPHELES: Was! dort schon hingerissen?
Da werd ich Hausrecht brauchen müssen.
Platz! Junker Voland kommt. Platz! süßer Pöbel, Platz!
Hier, Doktor, fasse mich! und nun in einem Satz
Laß uns aus dem Gedräng entweichen;
Es ist zu toll, sogar für meinesgleichen.

NOTE: The best edition for help with the German is Walter Kaufmann's: Goethe's Faust

The book is magnificent, but what drives me batty ...
By CiRCE Institute
The book is magnificent, but what drives me batty is dealing with the control we give up over our lives with these technologies. Amazon randomly decided, or at least decided for no reason known to me, that I could not download this on my kindle App, but only on the kindle cloud reader. I wanted it on the reader so I could use the German-English dictionary.

I have to say, the handing over of our lives to the randomness of tehcnology doesn't make sense to me. I appreciate the benefits, but nothing is worth losing control over your own decisions.

Nicht zu unrecht Bestandteil des universellen Kanons.
By Felix Stockert
Everyone who is capable of reading and understanding the German language should read this book. It's Goethes Masterpiece and every one with a love for poetry will adore this. In addition, the play is about one of the most classical subjects of mankind, the urge to find those inner secrets of the world, to understand it and to lose every passion for life over it...

First comes the red rain: a strange, scarlet downpour from a cloudless sky that spreads across cities, nations, and the entire globe. In a matter of panicked hours, every living thing on earth succumbs to swift, bloody death. Yet Emily Baxter, a young newspaper reporter, is mysteriously spared—and now she’s all alone.

But watching the happy life she built for herself in New York City slip away in the wake of a monstrous, inexplicable plague is just the beginning of Emily’s waking nightmare. The world isn’t ending; it’s only changing. And the race that once ruled the earth has now become raw material for use by a new form of life never before seen…on this planet.

With only wits, weapons, and a bicycle, Emily must undertake a grueling journey across a country that’s turning increasingly alien. For though she fears she’s been left to inherit the earth, the truth is far more terrifying than a lifetime of solitude.

From Kirkus Reviews
“This is a page-turning, apocalyptic thriller that manages to imbue some nice original twists… Conceptually, Extinction Point is fantastic… A recommended, fun, summer blockbuster-type of read.”

Review
"Paul Jones has started a refreshingly unique Post-Apocalyptic series, unlike anything I have read in the genre... Paul Jones' ability to bring complex concepts to life through description and narrative is awe inspiring. Few authors could successfully create the world that emerges after the 'red rain.' Even fewer could relate the experience to readers in such vivid detail." – Steven Konkoly, Author of The Jakarta Pandemic and Black Flagged & Black Flagged Redux

"Think "Day of the Triffids" meets "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" meets "I am Legend" and you still won't have grasped the full scope of the apocalypse in Paul Jones' artfully crafted tale of extinction and survival."– David P. Forsyth, Author of the Voyage of the Dead series

"Holy red smoke! This book scared me. I like scary books but this book SCARED me... The strength of this story is the details and the believability. The author makes the reader truly believe the events in the book. I loved how every move Emily made was described and how the reader could go "NOOOO" when you watched Emily go somewhere where you knew trouble was waiting!" – Four out of Five Skulls, BadassBookReviews.com

About the Author
A native of Cardiff, Wales, Paul Antony Jones now resides near Las Vegas, Nevada, with his wife. He has worked as a newspaper reporter and commercial copywriter, but his passion is penning fiction. A self-described science geek, he’s a voracious reader of scientific periodicals, as well as a fan of things mysterious, unknown, and on the fringe. That fascination inspired Extinction Point, his first novel in a proposed series following heroine Emily Baxter’s journey into the bizarre new alien world our earth has become. The first sequel, Extinction Point: Exodus will be available soon.

A review written in the style of "Extinction Point"
By J. Boynton
A review written in the style of "Extinction Point":

"Karen read the book, turning the pages with her hand. She remembered how her grandmother had taught her how to read back on the farm. She had turned the pages with her hand, guiding Karen's young hand as it turned the pages. Thank god she'd shown her how to do it! Suddenly Karen realized she was hungry. She felt a gnawing sensation of hunger in her stomach. When had she last eaten? She needed to eat before she tried to write her book review. She went to the kitchen to make a sandwich because she was hungry, but on the way to the kitchen she tripped over the edge of a throw rug and fell to the floor. When she finally regained consciousness hours later, the pain was excruciating. The thick carpeting had done nothing to break her fall. Everything hurt. She felt like she'd been run over by a truck. Had she broken her arm? Ruptured her spleen? Did she have brain damage? Gingerly, she tried to move her shoulder. A wave of pain and nausea flooded over her, and she passed out again.
When she awoke, Karen realized she was still hungry. That sandwich wasn't going to make itself. Hobbling into the kitchen, she opened the refrigerator door and took out a package of sliced turkey that had been hidden in the back behind a jar of pickles. She rolled up one slice of turkey into a tube and took a bite. Then she took two slices of turkey and two slices of bread, spread some mayonnaise on the bread, cut some tomatoes into quarter-inch-thick slices, sprinkled on some pepper, and assembled it all into a sandwich. She ate the sandwich, now wondering how she was going to write her book review semiconscious with a bad shoulder and maybe a ruptured spleen and brain damage. She had never learned to type on her computer. She'd probably do it wrong or kill herself trying to maneuver her fingers around the keyboard. No, better to hand-write the review and send it by mail. No! Even better to hand-write the review and walk the 4,000 miles to the editorial office to hand-deliver it. That made sense! Karen moved slowly over to the great big wooden roll-top desk, being careful not to cause her spleen and/or shoulder further injury. On the way to the desk, she tripped over the rug again and this time she knocked her shin against the end table, tipping over a lighted candle and setting the throw pillow on fire. Oh no! She watched in horror and dismay as her favorite pillow went up in flames. She grabbed the throw rug and beat out the fire. What a day! Then she went over to her desk and found her favorite pen and two sheets of off-white paper (never bright white!) and started to write her review."

The review
The only intriguing thing about this poorly written, poorly conceived, illogical, and just plain boring novel is "The Mystery of Its Many Oddly Similar-Sounding Five-Star Reviews." The main character--the only character--lacks any compelling qualities. She's not smart or clever or funny. She has no common sense. She's unbelievably clumsy, and her injuries are way out of proportion with her accidents. Also, almost nothing happens in this book. Considering it's supposed to be dealing with an extinction-level event and post-apocalyptic New York, that's a pretty amazing achievement. The detailed description given to everyday actions is excruciating and unnecessary (changing a battery, packing a suitcase, shopping at the market, making a sandwich). And repetitive. Then there's the "refusing to drive a car" problem mentioned by other reviewers. It's a huge issue, and it should have been worked out by the author in an earlier draft. Likewise the "let's stock up on canned goods and huge bottles of water for the bike trip" problem. She must have a magic bicycle, magic backpack, and superhuman strength to ride a bike loaded up with what must have been 100+ pounds of stuff. I have no doubt this was written without any editorial involvement. It reads like a first draft, and a bad one.

No Resolution, Questions Left Unanswered
By Brother Ken
I have no problem with a series. Book One? Okay, I'll try that. The problem I have is that this is not a full book. Well, it's as long as a book, but it doesn't have a full story arc. This reads like the first part of a book stretched out to make it long enough to call a book. But there is no resolution for the reader. The story just stops, and if the reader wants to know what happens next, they have to wait for the next book.
A properly constructed series of books has a complete story arc in each book, with a continuing story running through the series. Extinction Point starts a story, then leaves the reader hanging. This reader feels cheated.

What I liked about this book was the basic premise: the red rain and what starts to happen after that.

Unfortunately, a good premise isn't enough. There is a long list of other problems:
Emily is the ONLY person in all of NYC that survives? Why? We never find out.
Dragging a body down the hallway exhausts her to the point of near-collapse?
Biking to ALASKA seems more workable than teaching herself to drive? Seriously?

A magical backpack that holds 2 parkas, several sweaters, snow boots, 2 pairs of sneakers, tee shirts, trousers, underwear, socks, and a supply of canned goods. (My biggest suitcase wouldn't hold all that.)

Emily starts off cursing like a sailor and never quits. This did not endear her to me. I never really warmed to her. She makes odd decisions. She's accident prone. Her injuries are always more serious than seemed feasible. On her first foray out for food and supplies, she goes across the street to the store that she saw being looted from her apartment window. Everything in NY is hers for the taking, and she picks through the debris of a looted store. Really? As the new Eve, she's sub-par.

There are technical problems as well, the worst being the continual misuse of the hyphen. It seemed like every page has at least one unnecessary hyphen. It was highly distracting.

Repetition was another problem. In the first chapter Emily goes to a café. She looks in. It's deserted and she has her pick of the tables. She goes in, greets the owner, and orders a BLT and Cappuccino (though all this takes many paragraphs). Again, the café is deserted and she has her pick of the tables. This sort of problem is, well, repeated.

The fitted bed sheet was "elasticated" (should be elasticized). She tried the website for the "Whitehouse." You know, that place the President lives. (White House.) Those were just two I noted, though there were others.

I slogged through this book because I really wanted to know what happens to Emily. The level of detail is excessive and slows down the story. Everything takes too long. Pages of inner speculation. Detailed descriptions of walking down the hallway or climbing the seventeen floors to the apartment she clings to. I really didn't care what streets she took to get to the bike store. By the time I reached about 80% it was clear there would be no resolution, unless it was a quick, unsatisfying wrap-up.

If you like drawn out, bloody, detail-saturated stories that leave you hanging until you can purchase the next book (which may or may not be out yet when you read this review), and the promise from the author that you will have to purchase maybe four more books before you get an ending, then this might be for you. If you like tight, concise writing that moves the story forward and a resolution at the end, give this one a pass.

NO WAY this is a 4 star book
By Amazon Customer
Amazon really is going to have to put some work into how reviews are listed and judged as authentic because I find it impossible that this book is getting the good reviews it is. The book has a great and intriguing original premise and plot line but is quickly lost in mind numbing, endless dribble as you read every thought the main character has. "How many pairs of underwear should I pack for my flight of survival out of the city"- yep, this important fact is there. The main character is a grown woman who lives in New York City. Even though she grew up on a farm she doesn't know how to drive a car and therefore decides she has to ride her bike to Alaska to find the other surviors instead of trying to learn to drive on the endless open roads. LOL! Really? I think my 14 yeard old, whose never driven would figure it out- gas for go and brake for stop. Not like she has to worry about hitting someone- there all dead. Instead she goes shopping for the numerous supplies she needs (you see the entire list because it decribes every detail of every item right down to tampons- so much fun to go shopping)and then somehow she is able to load what has to be about 150 pounds of stuff on this bike.
The worst part for me was how early in the book she's in a dark office building where she's distracted by a scary something and then proceeds to trip over something and fall on a desk and then to the ground. Amazingly she feels like she's broken a rib that has punctured her lung as well as maybe dislocating her shoulder. She ends up with just a completely bruised face and terrible shoulder/arm pain where she can hardly lift her arm and we hear about for the next 50 pages. She even drops a knife when she falls and the tip of the knife is broken off! Come on, did she fall out of 3rd story window or just trip over a trash can and go boom. Ridiculous.
She also talks to survivors in Alaska after an amazing day of seeing crazy things happening that will affect overall survival of earth in general. Does she share any of this stuff with the scientists in Alaska who have no idea what's happening in the local events? No, because it was would sound just to crazy. What? Every person on earth is pretty much dead and she holds back information for these scientist to maybe learn from. Come on.
How an author could come up with such a great and unique concept and then end up writing this bore is pretty amazing.I could go on and on with the stupidity in this book but I guess I'll stop raving on. I don't suggest you get this book.

Odd to Say, But This Is A Very Kind Book
By Pop Bop
I know that this is a supernatural adventure/fantasy book with some exciting and suspenseful moments, but the thought that I keep coming back to is that this is also a very kind and almost gentle book.

We start by meeting the 12 year old hero Luca. He is thoughtful, observant, well-spoken, calm and friendly. He's not a goody-goody or a bore; he's just a very good-hearted and cheerfully alert sort. His younger sister Valentina is stubborn and a bit eccentric, but Luca is quick to admit that she's sort of a laugh, and a good friend. Dad's somewhat distant and distracted, and Mom is described in terms of affection and endearment. I don't remember when I last read a young middle grade fantasy/adventure book that opened with such a wholesome, appealing and interestingly happy family of characters.

MILD SPOILER. The book takes off when the children's Uncle Alistair shows up and we find out that the children have "The Sight"; that is, they, like Allistair, can see and communicate with ghosts. We discover the kids' ability when they see that Uncle Alistair is accompanied by a little girl ghost. Luca and his sister talk with this little girl, Camilla, and she tells them that she has been lonely for a century and would like them to treat her as a sister. A great friendship is thus formed. Again, this is the most mellow, pleasant, good-natured and cheerful start to a ghost story that I can imagine. The larger plot here is that Uncle Alistair runs a "pest control service" but while Uncle Alistair promises to "rid houses of ghostly pests", what he really does is help to rescue and properly relocate ghosts and other spooky things. So, even here we've got a kindly humanitarian angle added to the usual rambunctious ghostbusting.

Now, this may make the book sound sappy. It's not. There is action and gripping excitement and even menace. But there is no horror or graphic violence, and the whole is wrapped up in good intentions and well meaning. That means it can be funny, (sometimes very funny), and quirky and a bit spine tingling while still being a very attractive book for younger readers. I mean, how often do you get to read a "delightful" ghost story.

The book is well-crafted, with some nice turns of phrase and a bit of a leisurely pace that allows the author to set a nice scene. So, you get quality writing, suspense, engaging characters, some quirky fun, appealing banter, and creepy creatures. What a nice package. I have had a lot of luck with books from the Kelpies line, (Kelpies is a range of books published by Floris; each has a Scottish connection, with most books being set in Scotland), and this is another well chosen winner.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Fun and entertaining
By S. Power
Really Weird Removals.com by Daniela Sacerdoti tells the story of Luca and his sister Valentina who find out that they have the sight when their long lost uncle appears. This allows them to see mysterious and dangerous creatures such as faries ghosts and trolls. Because of this sight they get to help their uncle with his business of removing these irritating and nasty creatures who have infested people's homes.

This is a cute book that kids will like. It's the perfect read for kids who are new to full length chapter books with the kids going on many adventures throughout the book. The characters are well written and relateable and the creatures are different without being scary. Kids will love the book and find it easy to follow.

Appropriateness: There is no adult or questionable content in this book. The book deals with monsters without being creepy or scary. I would recommend this book to readers 9-11.

This is a must read!
By Kindle Customer
Hott Synopsis:
Luca thought he knew everything about his family until the day when an uncle, Alistair, he didn’t know about shows up on the doorstep.
That’s the day when Luca’s world begins to change. The day that he starts believing in secrets, ghosts, kelpies, mermaids, and time travel.

That’s the day when Luca and his sister, Valentina, join their uncle’s pest removal business. The pest removal business that’s for the paranormal pests.
Will they be able to stay alive and fix the family problems brewing beneath the surface?

Hott Review:
This book was so much fun! I loved how the true point of the business was just helping people and their ‘pests’ live happily. It was a tremendous book about accepting others as they are and managed to toss in a great message to bullies and the bullied.
Though it’s best read by a middle-grader I think many younger minds will enjoy this as well – they just may need help with some of the words.
Overall – this is a must read!
