Perfect for a special little girl in your life!

This is a really cute little book. So many people are reading and selling ebooks that it is sometimes difficult to other books on line. I bought one of these for my niece and one for my grand daughter. They absolutely loved it. One thing my grandma used to do was to right a little note on the front inside cover along with the date. I still have many of them today and they are so precious. I would recommend this book to other readers that have a special little girl in their life.
This book has hard laminate on the front and back so it is easy to wipe down with a dampened cloth. It has great pictures and it is an easy read. Perfect for a bed time story. I thought that the price was good for the quality of the book.

Excellent book, gives you enough information about different cases and coexisting diseases, each topic in 2 pages. More than 300 authors participated in about 500 important topics. Well- referenced from recent sources. Also adds suggested readings. I believe it is important book to have for quick consultation.

Inspiration for a deeper, more fulfilling yoga practice.

This is one of the best books I've read for freeing a yoga practice from the mat, from the body, and integrating it into every aspect of a person's life.

This isn't a pose book, and it isn't a sutras text, though it has many elements of both. This book is more of a portable, ongoing yoga seminar. It's written in a style that's not merely descriptive, it's very interactive. You'll be asked questions and -- as you read the case studies -- you'll actually be working together with the yoga students in the book.

As a reference, it's not positioned as a replacement to other texts in your existing yoga library, but it will certainly complement all those other books. True to its title, it speaks to the core of yoga -- the person, the connections, the stillness of mind, the union -- and improves what you have.

For those considering the path of the yoga teacher, the book also serves as an excellent foundational text, and a gateway from yoga practitioner to yoga teacher.

This book will inspire you to deeper breaths and deeper thoughts.

Unlike other yoga books

This book not only thoroughly and easily explains how yoga can transform your life but it also gives many specifics as to how you can bring these elements to your own life, and to your own yoga practice. It has pictures of poses too, but that is clearly not where the emphasis is in this book. The explanation of poses is fairly brief (although certainly clear) because you can eventually become the pose by letting go of expectations and opening to your intentions and the moment. I hope this book can help to deepen people's understanding of yoga.

Fascinating!

I haven't read many yoga books, and I am only a very occasional yoga dabbler, but this book deepened my perspective on the practice beyond the obvious wellness benefits and helped me to understand that a disciplined and comprehensive practice with a teacher and community can be, as the subtitle indicates, "transformational."

Mind and body are nicely linked in a very readable discusssion of the "ten essential steps": Intention, Attitude, Posture, Breathing, Archetypes, Energy Centers, Concentration, Locks and Seals, Psychological Blocks, and, Emotional Transformation. A Catalog of Yoga Poses and a Sanskrit Glossary add to the very practical impact of this inspiring book.

Suffering But Not Self-Pitying

As a person who was also diagnosed with schizophrenia, (though I never heard voices), I found this a fascinating account of another person's journey from breakdown to recovery. The greatest strength of this book is the way in which the authors interwove the tyranny of the voices Ken Steele heard with the events of his life. The book gave me a clear understanding of how nightmarish it must be to live with a constant chorus of psychotic voices harassing you and insulting you from morning until night. Next, what struck me powerfully was the completely inhumane treatment Mr. Steele received from the mental health establishment. During the initial months of his first hospitalization Mr. Steele was locked up in isolation and given so much medication he couldn't move, not even to go to the bathroom. He peed and pooped where he was and attendants hosed him off to get him clean. Subsequently, in other hospitalizations he continued to be subjected to serious overdoses of medication. He was locked in seclusion rooms for extended periods of time, threatened and ultimately gang raped by other patients, and at one point locked in a closet for days on end. During the course of this book Ken Steele speculates that the cause of his illness was entirely biochemical and that his recovery took place solely as a consequence of the new medications he took later on in his life. But I felt that there was no way that his family life could not have had some influence on the outbreak and course of his illness. From the beginning it is clear that his parents have little interest in him, and that he is largely being brought up by his grandmother. When it became clear that he was suffering from a severe mental illness, his parents did nothing about it. And when he later ran into trouble and ended up hospitalized, his parents didn't even bother to visit him or concern themselves with his situation even though they were fully informed of what was happenening to him. When it came to Ken Steele's recovery, medication may have been a part of it, but it is indisputable that before he decided to take the medication, he had come to the point where he made the choice to be responsible for himself, to stop playing games and lying to himself and other people. In other accounts of people with mental illness, this moment of decision, the decision to take personal responsibility for oneself, is pivotal to any meaningful kind of recovery. And Ken made that recovery, and more than just recoverying, he went on to advocate for psychiatric patients such as himself and play a significant role in improving the lives of others. Suffering greatly, struggling greatly, recovering heroically, Ken Steele is without self pity, and through this book, continuing to give to others, even after his death.

Steele's book is one of the best I've seen on the subject. He tells us an insider's view of schizophrenia that is rarely portrayed so accurately. He does not tout a particular drug or a particular doctor, therapy, or procedure, which I feel is important because so many times an author credits a "miracle cure" for their recovery. There are many treatments for this illness and the appropriate one may differ from one person to another. I found I could identify with Ken in his quest to start living after thirty years of being out of commission, his drive to unite people with mental illnesses and improve conditions for us all. After I went through 18 years of mental illness and recovered, it seems there is a lot to do to make up for lost time. The memory of Ken Steele will stay with the reader for a long time, and so will his message.

The Sound of Silence, The Voice of Hope

Ken Steele had his first psychotic break replete with auditory hallucinations in October of 1962 when he was 14. Considering the world's collective madness involving the threat of nuclear war and having children cower under desks in schools, madness abounded in those days. Ken Steele's was sadly adolescent onset pychosis as opposed to the mass hysteria that was the order of the day. He was first hospitalized following that episode.

Steele's mental illness included paranoia; he feared going out in public and thought others were talking about him. When Steele's brother Joe was born in 1964, he felt further alienated from his family. On January 2, 1966 Steele left his home for good. Sadly, he served time in and out of hospitals for the next 15 years.

In 1974, one door opened. Steele, calling home from an institution out of state received his first invitation home in nearly a decade. Sadly, this visit did not pan out and he was back in the throes of mental forces he could not control.

In 1991, Steele's luck changed for the better. He was well matched with a Brooklyn therapist named Rita Seiden who responded to him with compassion. I like the way she explained his mental illness to him and treated him with respect at all times. He was referred to a Dr. Casimir in 1994 who prescribed Risperdal. Steele began taking it in November of 1994 and on May 3, 1995, his voices stopped. For the first time since 1962 he was free of auditory hallucinations.

While working with Dr. Casimir, Steele took up the banner of securing the vote for mentally ill persons. His contention that "mentally ill does not mean mentally incompetent" was on target. In late 1994, he began working tirelessly to secure that right for people with mental illnesses. In the late 1990s, Steele became a publisher of "New York City Voices: A Consumer Journal for Mental Health Advocacy" and an editor of a monthly newsletter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill and spoke on behalf of the National Mental Health Association's "Partners In Care." One thing that comes through quite plainly in this book is that Ken Steele was a truly good man. A truly good man. This book will touch many hearts.

Sadly, Steele never met his brother's children. His voice was stilled on October 7, 2000. This book might make you cry, but Ken Steele will certainly inspire you. His was a life etched in pain, emphasized by his compassion and his tireless quest to help others in his shoes. Reading this book will leave an indelible impression on all readers.

About the Author

Wendy Mewes lives in the wilds of Finistère. A love of history and landscape drives the themes of her published work, which includes Discovering the History of Brittany, Walking the Brittany Coast: Morlaix to Benodet, Crossing Brittany (a travelogue based on walking the Nantes-Brest canal) and The Five of Cups, a novel set in the Monts d’Arrée. She runs the Brittany Walks website and works extensively promoting the understanding of Breton history and landscape to anglophones through talks, courses and guided events. She has been filmed for regional TV in France, and has broadcast a historical series for local radio.

Brilliant for physics in audiology

I wish I'd had this book when I started my masters in audiology (NZ). It would have made my life so much easier! Of all the textbooks covering physics (including sound digitization and electronic circuitry) for student audiologists, this one stands head and shoulders above the rest. The authors designed the book to fill in gaps for audiology students who lack or need to brush up on the sciences required for postgrad audiology courses (particularly physics and maths). They certainly deliver on their promise of making complex concepts simple to understand without dumbing down the content. They talk though the mathematics step by step (wonderful for those of us who struggle with numbers) and even managed to demystify impedance for me - which, after months of struggling, I didn't think was possible. I'm not sure how it would be to read this book independently from a course, but it is so complete and self-explanatory, I imagine it would be fine. For anyone struggling in a physics for audiology course it is absolutely invaluable and could save you hours of frustration. Well worth the price.

Then, we’re in a gangster novel. Those gems were the take in a mob heist, and the mob is in a bloody war with at least two other mobs. Now everybody is after Gill. Then Wiprud shifts to a conspiracy thriller. Seems Gill is a damaged naval-intelligence officer, and “jewel thief” is the make-believe role he took on as part of psychotherapy. Did his therapists know he’d take it seriously? Does credulity falter when we get to the betrayal novel near the end? Depends on where readers stand about government intrusiveness since 9/11. Gill’s manipulation by the Feds is either paranoid fantasy or deadly accurate. The blending of forms makes for choppy reading, but there’s enough action here to keep one going until the book finishes as a novel of revenge. --Don Crinklaw

Best Wiprud Yet

I've been a big fan of Brian Wiprud's since I discovered his Sleep With The Fishes, such a volatile combination of noir, oddball humor, and fishing lore. But THE CLAUSE finds Wiprud in a whole new vein. He's still got that sardonic wit, but now it's far more personal. The baddies are far more bad, and in varying degrees. The consequences are far more grave, both for the characters and for society. The multiple plot levels intertwine even more deftly than ever before. The action scenes pop right off the page.

And this one really stays with you. Highly recommended for readers looking for a little more substance in their suspense reading.

(Don't tell my relatives, but they're all getting THE CLAUSE for Christmas.)

Captivating Reading Adventure

I have read all of Brian Wiprud's humorous books and they were just fun to read and enjoy. So I held off on his crime novels because I liked the humor and Michael Connelly satisfied my need for crime. I've been reading and enjoying Robert Parker's Spencer crime novels and thought I would give Wiprud's The Clause a try, what the heck, you can always put it down and pick up something else. Wow! Wiprud's crime novel is not a Spencer or a Harry Bosch, from the very start you just want to keep turning the pages to see what happens next. A lot of detail that will take a second read to fully appreciate. While the book is described as a crime novel, that is just a medium for a great adventure with lots of twists and turns. It is written in the first person so you know that Gill will make it to the end, but how he does it navigating through the Serbs, Cubans, Chinese, CIA, FBI and personal emotions is amazing. Brian Wiprud is very good at ending his books with surprises that are not anticipated and are long remembered. I got half way through the book enjoying each time I had a chance to read a few chapters and then couldn't put it down until it was finished. Wiprud's humor is great, but his crime is amazing, I will read anything he writes!

Excellent Reading

The CLAUSE (an understood option of each man for himself and never betraying his handler) is an exciting read featuring our hero, Gill Underwood and his lady friend Trudy, both with former military ops training. They team up to heist a jewelry find of $150 million. Unfortunately, they also run into the Russians, the Serbians, the Cubans, the Chinese and all the while under the watchful eye of the FBI, the CIA and I believe the NSA. Luckily our hero employs the Sun Tzu's Art of War and always lucks out by playing one against the other. This is not my normal choice of reading but I'm glad I stumbled upon it for $1.99. Worth every penny. Excellent writing, no dragging along, no skipping paragraphs or pages. All very exciting and a thrill to get back to each night of reading in bed to fall asleep.

About the Author
Hevina S. Dashwood is Associate Professor of Political Science at Brock University, Canada. Her broad research and teaching interests encompass international political economy, the role of non-state actors in global governance, international public policy and Canadian foreign policy. Professor Dashwood is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the mining sector and has conducted case study research on Canadian mining companies' CSR in Africa and Latin America.

Good comparative case analysis of norms influencing mining company CSR

The past two decades have seen a tectonic transformation of the global mining industry from a relatively insular and technocratic sector to one which is now at the forefront of global policy forums. By no means has the transformation been uniform nor is it by any means complete or irreversible. Hevina Dashwood's book seeks to address the question of how global ethos around Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) might have influenced corporate change at the level of the firm. She also asks why this change occurred more swiftly in some companies versus others. Focusing on detailed case analysis of 3 Canadian mining companies, Dashwood hypothesizes that norms were not a sufficient motivator of change but rather senior managers acted as 'norms entrepreneurs' to galvanize palpable change in corporate behavior.

Her narrative considers alternative explanations such as the pressure from civil society groups and globalization and she provides nuanced examples of the interplay of various factors that might constitute complex causality in each case. Part of the challenge she faces with her publication is that 2 of the 3 companies she analyzed no longer exists since the fieldwork was carried out more than a decade ago. Thus her book should be read in historical context. In particular, Noranda was a company that was particularly innovative with regard to full-scale sustainability approaches and considering a circular economy -- for example they even had investment in a recycling business for electronics. However, the dominant forces of reductionist industrialization made them an easy target for acquisition by convention mining majors and after 3 different company sales, the vestiges of Noranda are instead to be found in mining giant Glencore-Xtrata.

Despite such challenges of case obsolescence, the book has immense value to showcase how rigorous social science research can be undertaken at the scale of corporate ethnography.
