Very informative
By scolvig
This is a nice little book, suitable for both older children and adults. The text is interesting, and the illustrations are lovely. However, I can't believe the price it's being sold for! I just bought it in Bali 2 weeks ago for about $3. You might as well buy a ticket to Bali and buy it there yourself.

The Barftastic Life of Louie Burger, by Jenny Meyerhoff

Fifth grader Louie Burger figures that with a goofy name like his, he must be destined to be a king of comedy like his idol Lou Lafferman. But he's only ever performed his stand-up act in his closet, where he and his dad created the most exclusive comedy club ever—if by "exclusive" you mean that no one's ever allowed inside. With the school talent show coming up, Louie's wondering if now is his moment to kill (that's comedian talk for "make actual people laugh"). And maybe, if he brings down the house, he'll win back his former best friend Nick—who seems to be turning into one of those annoying sporty types—and fend off his dad's home-improvement obsession, which threatens to remodel Louie's comedy closet into a private bedroom for his older sister. Barftrocious!

From School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-Fifth-grader Louie Burger is a would-be comedian with a bad case of stage fright. He has a great repertoire of funny jokes that he can only perform in front of a pretend audience on a stage he and his dad built inside his closet. Louie's best friend for years has been his neighbor, Nick Yamashita. Recently Nick has become friends with a girl whose nickname is Thermos. Although they try to include Louie in their activities, he is jealous and ends up being rude. Navigating this friendship issue is difficult, and Louie is not finding as much support as usual from his dad, who recently lost his job. When Louie feels overwhelmed, he writes and draws funny journal entries. With the fifth-grade talent show looming, he receives help in overcoming his stage fright from an unexpected source. At times the "barf" silliness becomes a distraction to the well-written story, but Meyerhoff does a good job of capturing the protagonist's voice, and readers will identify with Louie. Clever illustrations enhance the narrative. Give this one to those who enjoyed Lisa Yee's "Bobby" books (Scholastic) or Lenore Look's "Alvin Ho" series (Random), and to reluctant readers.-Tina Martin, Arlington Heights Memorial Library, ILα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Meyerhoff’s latest middle-grade novel is narrated by an aspiring stand-up comedian with a long way to go before the big time. Louie Burger is just starting fifth grade and has performed his routine for no one but the stuffed animals in his closet. It’s a big closet, though, complete with a stage built by his encouraging dad, but Louie still feels pressure to test his jokes on an actual audience. As he decides whether to perform in the school talent show, he has other worries, too: his best friend’s new friendship with a girl named Thermos, the frequent taunts of a more athletic classmate, and the shifting dynamics at home now that his dad is pursuing his lifelong dream of being an artist. Striking a nice balance between Louie’s home and school lives, Meyerhoff makes Louie a sympathetic figure. He tries hard at many things beyond his repertoire of jokes, including being patient with his younger, rather eccentric sister. Week’s capital-Z zany illustrations are plentiful and, like Louie, quite comical. Grades 3-6. --Abby Nolan

Review

"Meyerhoff saddles a fifth-grade would-be comedian with both severe stage fright and a new classmate who comes between him and his best friend." -- "Kirkus Reviews"

"Give this one to reluctant readers." -- "School Library Journal"

"Week's monochromatic art adds to the humor with its cast of appealingly goofy big-headed folks." -- "BCCB"

"Filled with funny quips and lovable characters, this book really packs a punch line. Kids will eat this Burger up!" --Tommy Greenwald, author of "Charlie Joe Jackson's Guide to Not Reading"

"Meyerhoff does a good job of capturing the protagonist's voice, and readers will identify with Louie. Clever illustrations enhance the narrative. Give this one to those who enjoyed Lisa Yee's "Bobby" books (Scholastic) or Lenore Look's "Alvin Ho" series (Random), and to reluctant readers." --School Library Journal

"Meyerhoff deals with peer relationships, family cohesiveness, and finding the courage to follow one's dreams--amid the rampant bodily humor. Week's energetic comics-style cartoons ramp up the story's slapstick comedy, whether demonstrating Louie's 'Barf Brothers' secret handshake or his major faceplant during gym glass." --Publishers Weekly

Hilarious and full of fun
By Kristen M. Harvey
Louie Burger is destined to be the next best comedian - the only problem is that he has stage fright. He can't perform in front of others and never has before - until the 5th grade talent show. If he doesn't prove his worth as a comedian, he may lose his closet and comedy stage to his older sister, which cannot happen. And beyond that, his best friend seems to have a new best friend - who likes sports but is also a girl. Somehow Louie must face his fears and overcome his stage fright and hopefully win back his best friend.

I absolutely fell in love with this book. I have stage fright so it was an instant connection to Louie. I'm a fan of comedy as well, so it was fun seeing his different jokes when he actually performed (mostly on his own). I love his two sisters as well. Ruby is a bit weird herself, like Louie and is obsessed with unicorns. I found her and her relationship with Louie adorable and heartwarming. Ari is the typical teenage girl, but still shows some love for her siblings and I loved her attitude and interactions with her family.

Then there's the relationship between Louie and Nick. Nick seems to have changed after going to summer camp, including having a new friend in Thermos, a girl who loves sports. Louie feels defensive about his relationship with Nick, thinking he has been replaced and making some poor choices in regards to Thermos. I loved seeing how things became resolved at the end of the book and what ultimately brought them all together.

Final Verdict: I read an ARC of this book, but there were some great illustrations included even in that version were really stunning and brought the story to life. A great book for elementary and middle grade readers that has a heartwarming message.

Laughs abound as Louie the fifth-grader pursues his passion
By Jared Castle
If giggles, guffaws and a belly laugh were the only measures of a children's book, this is a five-star read. Kou, my fourth-grader, laughed his way through the book, reading a couple chapters nightly before going to bed.

Over breakfast, Kou would provide an update on the latest developments in Louie Burger's life: his desire to be a comedian, his innovative wordplay and his struggles with stage fright.

I read each chapter myself to check my son's reading comprehension. For me, the bodily humor wasn't a hook as much as Louie's relationships with his friends (Nick and Thermos) and his family. In fact, one plot point - Nick's father losing his job - initiated a series of nervous from my son about my own employment. I was happy to assure him I have a full-time job, so no need to worry. I thank author Jenny Meyerhoff for that deeper discussion since fifth-graders tend to live in the moment.

Minus the bodily function humor, Louie Burger reminded me of another character, 11-year old Sullivan Mintz, a juggler who suffers stage fright in Cary Fagan's story, The Boy in the Box: Master Melville's Medicine Show. At their core, Louie and Sullivan are young boys just trying to find their place in the world.

Aren't we all.

Rating: Four stars

adorkable humorist
By AIROLF
I laughed, I cried, I cried from laughing so hard. This is an amusing story of a boy who fancies himself a comedian but has such a terrible case of stage fright, he is afraid to perform in front of anyone but his own clothes in his closet.

The story is full of a very supportive nuclear family, and although Louie struggles with his dealings with his siblings and his friends, he is a good guy who figures out that family and friendship are the key to becoming not just a good comedian, but a good human being.

I especially enjoyed the little gray pages with Shakespearean asides - comments and glossaries that appear in every chapter of the book. The vocabulary words that are part of the Louie vernacular are barftastic!

Declaring War directly challenges the 200-year-old belief that Congress can and should declare war. By offering a detailed analysis of the declarations of 1812, 1898 and the War Powers Resolution of 1973, the book demonstrates the extent of the organizational and moral incapacity of Congress to declare war. It invokes Carl von Clausewitz's dictum that 'war is policy' to explain why declarations of war are an integral part of war and proposes two possible remedies - a constitutional amendment or, alternatively, a significant re-organization of Congress. It offers a comprehensive historical, legal, constitutional, moral and philosophical analysis of why Congress has failed to check an imperial presidency. The book draws on Roman history and international law to clarify the form, function and language of declarations of war and John Austin's speech act theory.

Travels through France and Italy (Tauris Parke Paperbacks), by Tobias Smollett

In 1763 Tobias Smollett set sail from Folkestone to Boulogne. He would not return to England for two years, during which time he travelled extensively - and in a notoriously ill-tempered fashion - through much of France and Italy. Smollett, seemed 'determined to be pleased with nothing' and was 'sardonic, satirical and decidedly gloomy'. In Paris, everything had 'shrunk' and was twice as expensive as his last visit. Versailles was a 'dismal habitation'. In Rome, he felt that Michelangelo's Last Judgement resembled a mob; his inn in San Remo was more miserable than the worst ale-house in England and in Lerici he was sure he would be poisoned. And yet, there were places where even Smollett could not fail to be captivated. The Maison Carrée in Nimes was 'ravishingly beautiful', Nice was enchanting and the port of Genoa 'dazzling'. His obvious pleasure in the landscapes through which he passed, his keen eye for colourful, telling details and the fact that his letters appear virtually as they were written beautifully illuminate both Smollett's character and the places he visited. Funny, honest and full of subtle magic, Travels through France and Italy is a rare and revealing portrait of 18th century Europe at a time when Marie Antoinette had just become queen of all France, the Grand Tour was in its infancy and Cannes was a quiet fishing village.

Review
Work by Tobias Smollett, published in 1766. The breakdown of Smollett's health and the death of his 15-year-old daughter in 1763 precipitated a year-long journey through France and Italy. The book takes the form of a series of letters in which he describes the social life, history, and physical setting of each city he encounters. Sick, irascible, severely prejudiced, and intolerant of pretense, Smollett argues with his hosts and fellow travelers and holds French and Italian art, politics, and Roman Catholic religion in contempt. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Review
'Today, the French Riviera welcomes ten million visitors a year. Tobias Smollett was one of the first of them, and his Travels through France and Italy marked the beginning of the region's metamorphosis - from diversion to destination.' - Ted Jones; 'It is the work of a scholar, an observer of human nature, and a satirist of no mean order. It gives us characteristic social vignettes, portraits of the road of an unsurpassed freshness and clearness. It contains some historical and geographical observations worthy of one of the shrewdest and most sagacious publicists of the day.' - Thomas Seccombe, in the original introduction to Travels through France and Italy

From the Back Cover
"Traduced by malice, persecuted by fiction, abandoned by false patrons, and overwhelmed by the sense of a domestic calamity", Tobias Smollett set off on a journey through France and Italy to relieve his despair. While there, he wrote regularly to his friends, who had asked him to keep records of inns, prices, and methods of transport should they wish to make the tour themselves someday. Smollett more than obliged them, and the result is this fascinating, wholeheartedly personal account of places and people in France and Italy. In one of the letters, Smollett makes his famous forecast that France would be in trouble as soon as a weak monarch came to power; in another he recommends the Roman Campania be drained and cultivated - a recommendation that was carried out in the Pontine Marshes in 1932-34. But Smollett is at his best when describing the inns and housekeepers, postilions and travelers. Travels through France and Italy is a landmark work in travel literature. Full of prejudice, grousing, sharp observation, and caustic satire, it is the first travel book in modern literature to go beyond the simple conveyance of information to reflect the writer's state of mind.

A very interesting book which deserves to be read by anybody, interested in the XVIII century literature. One of the best by Smollett. The only complaint is it being devoid of any sort of editor's comments, sometimes even translations of Latin phrases are missing.

Smollett wanders around and takes notes
By othoniaboys
I read the Oxford University Press edition of this work, complete with extensive footnotes, which I recommend as the best edition for modern use. The reader gets an insight into the way things were in Europe in those days.

Very detailed and descriptive of the travels and countryside. I did find it long winded with too much ancient descriptions in Latin.

The Oldest Word for Dawn: New and Selected Poems, by Brad Leithauser

From one of our most universally admired poets: a generous selection from his five acclaimed books of poetry, and an outstanding group of new poems.

From the outset, Brad Leithauser has displayed a venturesome taste for quirky patterns, innovative designs sprung loose from traditional forms. In The Oldest Word for Dawn, we encounter a sonnet in one-syllable lines (“Post-Coitum Tristesse”), a clanging rhyme-mad tribute to the music of Tin Pan Alley (“A Good List”), intricate buried rhyme schemes (“In Minako Wada’s House”), autobiography spun through parodies of Frost and Keats and Omar Khayyám (“Two Summer Jobs”).
In a new poem, “Earlier,” the poet investigates a kind of paradox: What is the oldest word for dawn in any language? The pursuit ultimately descends into the roots of speech, the genesis of art. “Earlier” is part of a sequence devoted to prehistoric themes: the cave paintings of Altamira, the disappearance of the Neanderthals, the poet’s journey with his teenage daughter to excavate a triceratops skeleton in Montana . . .

The author of six novels as well, Leithauser not surprisingly brings to his verse a flair for compelling narrative: a fateful romantic encounter on a streetcar (“1944: Purple Heart”); the mesmerizing arrival of television in a quiet Detroit neighborhood (“Not Lunar Exactly”); two boys heedlessly, joyfully bidding permanent farewell to a beloved sister (“Emigrant’s Story”).

The Oldest Word for Dawn reveals Brad Leithauser as a poet of surpassing tenderness and exactitude, a poet whose work, at sixty, fulfills the promise noted by James Merrill on the publication of his first book: “The observations glisten, the feelings ring true. These poems by a young, unostentatious craftsman are made to something very like perfection. No one should overlook them.”

OLD GLOBE

For her big birthday
we gave her (nothing less would do)
the world, which is to say

a globe copyrighted the very year
she was born—eighty years before.
She held it tenderly, and it was clear

both had come such a long way:
the lovely, dwindled, ever-eager-to-please
woman whose memory had begun to fray

and a planet drawn and redrawn through
endless shifts of aims and loyalties,
and war and war.

*

Her eye fell at random. “Formosa,” she read.
“Now that’s pretty. Is it there today?”
A pause. “It is,” my brother said,

“though now it’s called Taiwan.”
She looked apologetic. “I sometimes forget . . .”
“Like Sri Lanka,” I added. “Which was Ceylon.”

And so my brothers and I, globe at hand, began:
which places had seen a change of name
in the last eighty years? Burma, Baluchistan,

Czechoslovakia, Abyssinia, Transjordan, Tibet.
Because she laughed, we extended our game
into history, mist: Vineland, Persia, Cathay . . .

*

She was in a middle place—
her forties—when photos were first transmitted,
miraculously, from outer space.

Who could believe those men—in their black noon—
got up like robots, wandering the wild
wastelands of the moon,

and overhead a wholly naked sun
and an Earth so far away
it was less real than this one,

the gift received today—
the globe she’d so tenderly fitted
under her arm, like a child.

*

Finally, there’s cake: eight candles in a ring.
. . . Just so, the past turns distant past,
each rich decade diminishing

to a little stick of wax, rapidly
expiring. I say, “Now make a wish before
you blow them out.” She says, “I don’t see—”

stops. Then mildly protests: “But they look so nice.”
We laugh at her—and wince when a look of doubt
or fear clouds her face; she needs advice.

Well—what should anyone wish for
in blowing candles out
but that the light might last?

THE BIRTH OF INJUSTICE

Meandering Neandertals
keep bumping up against

the glacier’s high, invasive walls,
whose blackened snout

comes down to eat the ground underneath their feet.

Which is the way now?
What else but hunched despair’s

narrowing valleys, this gathering
feeling of everything

constricting?
It’s an old notion, nearly sensed
from way back when: somehow,

this exorbitant venture of theirs
—Life—isn’t working out.

She’s a brooder, this one,
on her rock, who once or twice, or thrice

(no words for numbers yet),
has laid a child to earth. They take

the tiny body from your arms and it goes
down into a cold mouth we make

ourselves, digging out the shape.
                                                             The ice
eats, the earth eats, and having set

her haunches on a rock, she ponders the light:
it’s dawn, or dusk, no language for

origins or ends, and yet the sun
is moving, and in her blood she knows

always their dwindling journey has been far
too brutal: something’s not right.

This big-boned figure who
subsists chiefly on cattails she praises

from the numb gray sand
of a half-frozen pond

prefers of course
the soft and steamy organs of horse

or aurochs, when those are in hand—
not often enough.
                                 Not often enough, days

warmly warm, all the way through,
when the wished sun rises

up in your chest with the blaze
of honey on the tongue, for you the ache

and sting of it, sweet beyond
any sounds a mouth might make.

REMOTE MIDNIGHT

Icelandic Mouse

As, safe in its hole,
The field mouse quakes when the hawk
Soars across the sky,
So the candle, indoors, shakes
When the wind goes howling by.

Kenyan Lion

. . . The leaves, too, quiver
At the roar of a creature
Whose gullet’s vaster
Than that lair where the battered
Blood-streaming sun’s retreated.

Lucid and luminous.
By Leslie Jane Le Mon
A collection of deft cadences and subtle rhymes. Readers are borne like swimmers among waves and deep marine currents; Leithauser's poems are rhythmic journeys among subjects, thoughts and moods, some harking back to our primal origins. Lucid and luminous.

The King of the Seven Seas Has Returned
By Anarchy in the US
Arthur Curry, AKA Aquaman, might be one the most underrated and unappreciated characters in comicdom. Or at least, he's up there. He's a character who's been around since 1941 and has felt like a B-tier character hanging out with A-tier characters in his 70+ years in comics. He wasn't always like that though. His solo series has (in my opinion) been pretty good through his comic life-span. His Silver-Age comics are pretty good (the showcase collection), the Peter David reboot Aquaman: Time and Tide lead to the serious pirate Aquaman that got a small following in Justice League and Unlimited cartoon series, Rick Veitch's slow but beautifully drawn Aquaman: The Waterbearer, Kurt Busiek's surprisingly good take with an Aquaman ringer in Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis, Vol. 1: Once and Future, and even the mid to late 70's collection Aquaman: Death of the Prince. By himself, Arthur is a reasonably established character.

But then the Super Friends television show happened in 1973 and well...the stigma of Aquaman began. Since then everyone has made a joke on Arthur's behalf, in all forms of media. He's been portrayed as various things over the year like cannon fodder for the Justice League, as well as simply being the guy that can swim fast and talk to fish thanks to Super Friends. Sure he's has the occasional and decent public portrayal (Grant Morrison's JLA for example or JLA Annual #2 where he lead the group), but nothing great. So it's always felt like he's a B-list character (some would argue C-list) hanging around a league of A-listers...

Until Geoff Johns 2009 event Blackest Night came about and Aquaman came back to the DC Universe as a black lantern. "Aquaman's back as a black lantern?" People thought. "Meh." But then Aquaman summons zombie sharks and kills of bunch of Atlanteans. Wait? What?! People took notice. And even Aquaman's wife, Mera got a following going due to being a main player in the event as well. And then Arthur came back to life and was a key component in the Brightest Day event. And out of all those who came back to life during that event, Arthur was probably the most popular of the bunch. Now with the New 52, Geoff Johns decides to carry on writing Arthur and his "Aquawoman" wife Mera with artist Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, to create a fresh new start on the king of the seven seas.

AQUAMAN VOL 1: THE TRENCH collects issues #1-6 and see's Arthur going about his daily life as super-hero crime fighter on the sea and on land. But the world see's Arthur as "that guy that talks to fish", and so many people see him as joke. Even when Arthur stops a pack of bank robbers, they laugh at the notion of him being a threat and the police feel embarrassed to have Arthur do something they themselves could of done. While Arthur is slowly getting back into the habit of life, a species of being from the darkest depths of the ocean come to land to feast upon those in their paths. It's up to Arthur and Mera to save the day.

Johns immediately talks about the criticism and perception of our worlds view of Aquaman and attacks it head on which makes for some great comedic use. Everything and anything you can think of, Johns answers it for Arthur. Does he actually talk to fish? Why eat the fish you he talks to? Why the orange colors? Does the A on the belt stand for Aquaman or Atlantis? Or how does it feel being the punch line of the joke? Johns even goes far enough to show Arthur's power set more fully then simply swimming fast. Super hearing, super strength and reflexes, and near-bullet proof skin are little details added to Arthur never quite seen before to establish Arthur really is a powerful being. Johns also shows a likable personality from Arthur that is well-tempered about how society treats him and just wanting to do what's right. All of these attributes make Aquaman stand out as powerful and likable character. And you don't have have read any past Aquaman material at all to enjoy the story.

Although the book is predominantly about Aquaman, you could almost consider it a buddy book, because Mera shares quite a bit of panel time with Arthur. It's one of the main themes regarding the book is Arthur and Mera's relationship together and it's handle fairly well. Mera herself has her share of powers and attributes that we get to see are quite different from Arthur (some bad and some good). Mera gets to have an entire issue of her going solo into town to simply get supplies and you see her personality (which it too is quite comedic). Either way, the dynamics between the two is nice to see happen.

Mention has to go to Ivan Reis. His art alone is amazing. Every fine detail of water and sand (!), to spash pages showing Aquaman in his shining orange outfit are stellar. You'll spend half the time looking and taking in Reis beautiful artwork. Special mention does also go for Joe Prado who does the coloring, as wall as drawing issue #6. Again, the art is stellar.

Now why the 4 star review instead of 5 you say? Two things come to mind. One of which is that the Trench arc is a mere 4 issues. Actually you can argue its 3 issues and it ends very abruptly (Though I do get the feeling The Trench will come back somewhere down the line in Johns run.). And the other thing is the issues collected which I'll explain. Issue #1 deal primarily on establishing Aquaman, while issues 2-4 are the Trench arc. Then issue #5 is the prologue to the next arc, "The Others". And issue #6 is mostly a stand alone tale about Mera going into town. See the problem here? It feels sort of scattered when you look at it, as if Johns played the Trench arc very safely (which it feels like) and just wanted to get to the next arc as soon as possible. It just feels a bit incohesive.

Overall though, AQUAMAN VOL 1: THE TRENCH is still a good start for this unexpected hit in the New 52. It has fabulous art and a capable writer behind it. This short volume may not be perfect, but the current team sure makes it feel like it does have it coming for it down the road. It's a new era for the king of Atlantis. And the fish jokes stop here.

"How's it feel to be nobody's favorite super-hero?"

If you haven't been reading AQUAMAN, well, I can't blame you. Aquaman is a charter member of the Justice League and once was monarch of an undersea kingdom. He has super-strength and a form of telepathy. He's also perhaps the most maligned superhero this side of Arm Fall Off Boy. But I've always had Aquaman's back. And when DC's New 52 initiative rolled around, there I was at my comic book store swiping Aquaman's new series off the shelves. I even paid and everything.

Aquaman can swim fast and breathe water. He can talk to fish, and it's when you bring that up that people inevitably make that snorting noise. Once upon a time, Aquaman couldn't survive on land without contact with water every hour. During the SUPERFRIENDS cartoon in the '70s and '80s, it was Aquaman, more often than not, who was assigned monitor duty at the Hall of Justice while even Wonder Woman deployed to the field. Arthur Curry, a.k.a. Aquaman, is the Rodney Dangerfield of the cape and cowl community. Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis aim to change that, aim to reimagine him as a badasss hombre.

Somewhere in this volume, in the aftermath of a harrowing incursion from marauding creatures of the depths, a cop dismisses Arthur Curry: "We've got this under control, Aquaman. I'm sure your intentions are good, but..."

Seriously, can you imagine some cop giving Batman the business?

AQUAMAN Vol. 1: THE TRENCH collects #1-6 of the reshuffled series and hopefully convinces even the most naysaying detractor that it's one of the best comics DC has currently got going. This IS the catch of the day. Six issues in, Geoff Johns is already delivering one of the best interpretations of the King of the Seven Seas. Yeah, Aquaman is still the biggest punchline in the realm of superhero jokes, and Johns is quick to address that. When Aquaman drops in on a local diner for a bite, his rep is so negligible that even maggoty bloggers don't shy from bluntly asking him: "How's it feel to be nobody's favorite super-hero?" Is Geoff Johns manipulating you by making Aquaman an instantly sympathetic underdog? Heck, yeah, he is. But is it working? Yes, I think so.

Sovereign under the sea, putz on the surface world. That's the theme Johns is running with. But I admire Arthur Curry for being resolute and carrying on despite the endless mockery. It's his fierce, red-headed, hard water-manipulating wife Mera (don't you call her Aquawoman!) who's champing at the bit, frustrated with the surface dwellers' constant bagging on her man. Arthur and Mera have decided to make a go of it on dry land. They reside in his father's lighthouse in Amnesty Bay. And even though Aquaman must feel like every day is a roast with him as the guest of honor, he doesn't hesitate when a knock on the door pits him against flesh-eating monsters from the ocean depths. But it is aggravating for Aquaman that he finds himself unable to communicate telepathically with them.

The opening story arc, "The Trench," is four issues long, and maybe it should've been two issues long. Johns takes a page from Bendis and engages in decompressed storytelling, but I'm cool with that. Johns packs in nice character beats and a surprising amount of humor. It's not that Aquaman himself becomes suddenly funny. Aquaman will always be this rigid, no-nonsense hero. But Johns has him rubbing elbows with the curious townspeople, and it's those interactions that elicit chuckles and grins. And, somehow, it humanizes Aquaman. Kind like what Oreo cookies did for the Martian Manhunter.

Issue #5 strands Aquaman in the desert and opens up a can of future plot threads. Issue #6 is Mera-centric. She ventures into town to buy dog food. She loses her temper. Cue the fun.

Ivan Reis returns Aquaman to majestic form, visually. The King of the Seven Seas hasn't cut a figure this dashing since Jim Aparo was drawing him. Aquaman should always be illustrated with that classic hero style in mind. It's pretty awesome seeing the bullets bounce off him, seeing him make those prodigious leaps, and cutting a swathe thru hordes of flesh-eating uglies with his trident. And Reis is a complete artist. Even when the characters are in repose or during those talking head panels, Reis maintains the arresting visuals.

If you'd ever wondered at the extent or limits of Aquaman's telepathic sway over the creatures of the sea, Johns educates us. And, lastly, lest all them folks making fun of Aquaman isn't enough to get you on his side, there's that dog the Currys adopt that someone immediately dubs "Aquadog." Except that Aquadog, appropriately enough, doesn't know how to swim. That's perfect.

One of the best New 52!
By Der Cap
Before NEW 52 Aquaman wasn't very popular.
Series like ,,The Big Bang Theory" made fun of him and when one of my friends heard that I read Aquaman, he was shocked :D
But it was a good decision!!!

The Artwork: AMAZING!!! There is no NEW 52 title with a better Artwork than Aquaman! The colours, the drawings...believe me...it is perfect ;)

The Story: Aquaman's first Storyline (Arc) goes from issue 1-6. The ,,main" Story about the trench goes from issue 1 to 4, but issue 5 and 6 belong to the story too...more or less (issue 6 less ;D) . But they are also (very -> issue 6) good. Issue 5 is basically a little result of issue 1-4 and issue 6 gives us some insights to Mera.

This Arc is very very good, but not perfect. More than 4 stars, but not 5 stars :S
If i could, i would give 4 1/2 stars, because I didn't like Issue 5 very much. It was ok, but a bit strange ^^

I think, the next two arc will be very good, too. Maybe anymore better than this arc, what is almost impossible :P

Maybe my English wasn't very good, cause English is not my native language. But i hope it was ok :P
Thanks for reading my first review in English ;)

As Sweet as Honey, by Indira Ganesan

In her latest novel, Indira Ganesan, a writer often likened to Arundhati Roy and Chitra Divakaruni (see back of jacket for reviews), gives us an enchanting story of family life that is a dance of love and grief and rebirth set on a gorgeous island in the Indian Ocean.

The island is filled with exotic flora and fauna and perfumed air. A large family compound is presided over by a benign, stalwart grandmother. There is a very tall South Asian heroine with the astonishing un-Indian name of Meterling, who has found love at last in the shape of a short, round, elegant Englishman who wears white suits. There are also numerous aunts, uncles, and young cousins—among them, Mina, grown now, and telling this story of a marriage ceremony that ends with a widowed bride who, in the midst of her grief, discovers she is pregnant.

While enjoying their own games and growing pains, Mina and her young cousins follow every nuance of gossip, trying to puzzle out what is going on with their favorite aunt, particularly when the groom’s cousin arrives from England and begins to woo her. As Meterling—torn between Eastern and Western ideas of love and family, duty and loyalty—struggles to make a new life, we become as entranced with this family, its adventures and complications, as Mina is.

And with her we celebrate a time and place where, although sometimes difficult, life was for the most part as sweet as honey.

From Booklist
Ganesan’s first novel since Inheritance (1998) is set on the island of Pi in the Bay of Bengal. The tale is narrated by Mina, who, as a 10-year-old, watches in awe as her six-foot-tall aunt Meterling falls in love with a chubby, genial Englishman by the name of Archer, only to tragically lose him just after they had exchanged their vows. Meterling’s family is scandalized to learn she is pregnant with Archer’s child, but it only fuels young Mina’s imagination about their courtship. After most of his family gives Meterling the cold shoulder, Archer’s cousin Simon comes to visit her, and he and Meterling fall in love quite unexpectedly. Smitten, Simon proposes to Meterling and spirits her and her baby, Oscar, to England, where Meterling not only experiences profound culture shock but also is thrown by the appearance of the ghost of Archer, who doesn’t approve of her relocation. Whether she’s describing verdant, lush Pi or bustling, crowded London, Ganesan brings Meterling’s two worlds, and her conflicted feelings about each of them, to vibrant life. --Kristine Huntley

Not really my type of book....
By Sharon S. Walker
Sometimes when reading the description of a book I feel that it would really be a read that I would enjoy. This is a well written book and the characters were interesting. Especially since these characters are driven by traditions and societal expectations that are so removed from my own.
I found the first half of the book hard to get through. A little slow moving for me. However it was carried along by the writer's ability to give some beautiful description of the island that made me feel that I could smell the flowers and breathe the air.
This was really the aspect that carried me along so that I wanted to continue into the second half of the book to see how the characters resolved the conflict of either following those traditions and expectations or following their heart's desires.
Well written, beautiful descriptions but I still give it an overall "3". Not exciting but not a bad book either.

A vibrant read set in an exotic location and culture
By Anne
3.50 stars.

I think the South Asian culture is wildly interesting. I haven’t read anything from that region or on that culture so I thought the book sounded fascinating. The Indian/Hindi culture is so vivid and colorful and that aspect of the culture was really brought out in this book. I could practically smell the jasmine and feel the sun on my face….what a glorious place to grow up.

I thought the location shift in the novel provided richness to the plot that could not have been achieved in any other way. Going from Pi to England was such a sharp contract in culture and I thought it really highlighted the difficulties that were felt by Meterling.

The only thing I felt was a struggle was the speed of the novel. It took me a long time to get thru the first half of the book. I was just so anxious to get to know Meterling and I felt like it simply took too long to actually get into the overall story.

I really struggled with the rating on this novel, I wanted to give it higher marks for it’s narration style, prose, and intriguing plot, however it took me so long to get into the book that I really didn’t feel as engaged as I had hoped. Perhaps it’s a personal preference, it was good but could have been outstanding with a bit of a faster pace. It was only 288 pages so it should have been a fast read for me, but it seemed to go on much longer than necessary.

Beautifully Written, Easily Forgettable Novel
By Satia Renee
As Sweet as Honey by Indira Ganesan is a novel set on an island in the Indian Ocean, focusing on the story of Meterling who falls in love with an Englishman. Beautifully written, the prose reads almost like poetry—evocative, delicate, and even elegant. Through the protagonist, the conflict between colonialism and nationalism are explored although not fully realized.

The novel is divided into three parts. All three are told through Meterling’s niece Mina. However, the second part can only be imagined by Mina because she is not immediately present for this part of Meterling’s story and it is this part that gives way to magical realism. However, this is not used to especially good effect. The end result feels more manipulative than narratively necessary. Certainly, this novel is not nearly as magical as Roy’s The God of Small Things. Absolutely not as politically provocative as Roy’s War Talk. Except for Meterling, we never come to know any of the other characters and even what we know about her is open to debate because the reader never knows if Mina’s descriptions are actual or her own interpretation. Perhaps that is Ganesan’s intention, to use the unreliable narrator to cause the reader to question everything.

I wanted to read this novel because, according to the description, the author is “likened to Arundhati Roy” (hence, my comparing Ganasen’s writing to Roy’s) so I expected to especially like this one. Unfortunately, I don’t anticipate that I’ll remember much about this novel a year from now. None of the characters were interesting enough to be truly memorable. This is one of those books I wanted to love but barely even liked. If not for the elegance of the prose, I’d not commend it at all.
