A wealth of knowledge for America's favorite reading room.

I don't know who Uncle John is, but he certainly pulled together some great writers and some wonderful pieces of military facts, fiction, and lore when he put this book together. Completely enjoyable from beginning to end, you will learn something in every sitting. Every service is mentioned repeatedly, and actions from the amazingly heroic to the ridiculously stupid are given equal time. Everything is simply written, easily formatted, and continuously refreshing and entertaining. From the somber (Arlington) to the comedic (Beetle Bailey, Bob Hope), every aspect of military life is covered, and in such a way that the reader is both educated and entertained.

I especially liked the way the authors divide up large topics into easily manageable chapters appearing in different places in the book. That keeps the reader from getting too much of any one topic at one time, and keeps things moving. I also really enjoyed the little factoids at the bottom of each page, completely unrelated to the story. These were always short but very interesting; an added bonus on each page.

Full of facts and fun, this is a must for any military member's bathroom, and will be heartily enjoyed by anyone who either served or just has a passing interest in the military.

A military book for everyone !

There are few books out today that will bring the reader such a interesting history of the American military. Written in a fashion that will attract everyone from the high school student to the retired combat veteran, this book is the highlight of the Uncle John's series.

They've taken all five branches of the service and given the reader dozens of little stories, facts, and vignettes from each. Some are funny, some are not, and many simply relate the unknown stories that makes up the fine tradition our military deserves: from Lt. John Yancy and his Marines fighting their way out of Chosin Reservoir, Bill Mauldin's cartoon characters Willie & Joe making their way across France during WW2,John Ripley (USMC) single handedly halting a North Korean advance at Dong Ha...to actor (and Navy veteran!) Eddie Albert's heroism at Tarawa...this book personalizes our fighting men in a way that most classical battles stories do not.

The book also takes the time to present some of the better books and movies that our Marines - Navy - Army - Air Force have spawned; while every military devotee has seen "Saving Private Ryan" and "Black Hawk Down", Uncle John suggests such movies as "They Were Expendable" and "Glory". His reading list is equally suberb: selections like "All Quiet on the Western Front" and Steinbeck's "The Moon is Down" serve to remind us that for all the music, flags, movies, and hoopla, wars are fought by some incredibly brave men who rise to an occasion thay'd never dreamed they'd encounter.

Interspersed in the book are the stories of the five young men who have earned the Medal of Honor -posthumously - while fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan; it's good to see Smith (USA), Dunham (USMC), Murphy (USN), Monsoor (USN), and McGinnis (USA) remembered.

This book will make great reading and a better gift - Bravo Zulu !!

I bought this as a gift for my dad. He is a veteran from the Air Force. He read it then I did. There was lots of history about the wars, (I,II). Overall, I enjoy Bathroom Readers. This one is much more somber than many. If you are looking for an uplifting story, try another book. The book was well written and well researched.

A lengthy, yet utterly engrossing story

Losing a spouse is hard enough, but not knowing what really happened is a crushing weight that Caro has dealt with for the past ten years after her husband disappeared somewhere in the African Rainforest. Left alone to raise their young daughter, Vivi, Caro hadn't so much as looked another man. Not that she would have had the time as they are still on the run from those who would seek to exploit Vivi's uniqueness. Yet, all that changes when Caro starts to realize that the vampire she has come to rely on over the past decade may actually mean more to her than just a friend. Yet time is precious as the vultures tracking them are circling, and this time escape may not be an option.

One of the most amazing things about HUNTING DAYLIGHT was the way it blended so many different elements together into a perfect balance. There was plenty of action, to the point where I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. The character development was astounding, and I really felt thoroughly connected to all of them. There wasn't a two dimensional character in the bunch, only fully realized ones that kept you ensnared by the heart strings. And oh! The romance was incredibly sweet yet also so hot, it practically steamed right off the page. It is very rare for an author to not only have that sort of blend in a novel, but also be able to pull it all together seamlessly, and yet in HUNTING DAYLIGHT Piper Maitland seemed to do it effortlessly.

Despite my love of this book and the series as a whole, there was one issue that just about burst my bubble. I was fully and utterly immersed in this HUNTING DAYLIGHT, no small feat considering the hefty length, right up until about the last hundred pages when a twist wrenched its way into the middle of things. But despite that twist I held out hope that it wouldn't irrevocably change things in the romance department. Unfortunately, my worst fears were realized, and in all honestly I felt absolutely miserable after finishing this book. I was literally heartsick. In fact I had to wait several days before writing this review to gain a little bit of detachment from things so I could look at it a bit more objectively. Granted, I have a feeling a lot of people will actually really enjoy that twist, but for me it was devastating. I can only hope that the next book will somehow pick up the pieces and give me the outcome I had hoped for, even if it probably wasn't the "right" one.

I am still amazed at Piper Maitland's ability to craft such a lengthy, yet utterly engrossing story. Just like in ACQUAINTED WITH THE NIGHT, five hundred plus pages went by in just a blink of an eye, to the point where once I was finished, I just couldn't believe the book was over already. In my opinion, that shows true talent. I'm not saying it is easy to write a compelling two to three hundred page book, as I surely couldn't. But to be able to tell a story that never once falters or starts to drag after reaching the five hundred pages mark, is incredibly impressive in my opinion. I cannot wait to see what Piper has in store for us next! HUNTING DAYLIGHT was an incredible follow up, and a rare treat that is not to be missed!

Piper Maitland has written and fantastic books with great world building with strong emotions and characters. Hunting Daylight is fast paced, full of twists, romantic events and surprises that just like the obsession of the dangerous villain in the book this book will became your obsession. To good to stop!

There where some parts or rather say chapters I thought where a little to stretched and with the many events in this big book, it felt sometimes like being on a Roller Coaster that just did one ride to many because there where not enough people waiting in line for the next ride!?! Sometimes enough is enough and it is ready to continue the main threat of the story line.

This said, the last part of the book made it all better. I can only hope for next installment.

I thought it was too much like a Disney ending.

Jude and Caro are in desperate need of money. The cost of blood does not come cheap. This is why Jude is going to take the job that the Al-Din Corporation has offered him. A thirty one day expedition in Africa. Something happens and Jude disappears. Jude has been gone so long that he is declared dead.

Caro and her daughter, Vivi try to get on with their lives. They are doing well until a vampire comes looking for them. Raphael, a vampire friend comes to Caro and Vivi's aid. As time passes, Caro and Raphael start developing feelings for each other.

Meanwhile across the world, a vampire lies dying from a disease. One that makes the vampire susceptible to daylight.

I have not read the first book, Acquainted with the Night. Although, I have seen the book around. Having said this, I had no trouble reading this book. In fact, I would have to say I enjoyed the vampires in this book. The vampires felt real to me. Like the type that could actually exist and be living among us in the present day.

What I also liked about this book is that Cara was not an immortal but only a partial. This added a nice element to the book. Where not all of the characters were full-fledged vampires or vampires and humans.

As soon as Raphael came into the picture more, I could tell where it was going to lead between Caro and Raphael. I thought that they made a good couple. Raphael really cared for Caro and would do anything to protect her. The love scenes between them were not overly sexed up. This was nice.

My only two disappointments with this book were that I thought that it was a bit long. While this is a quick read, the action goes in waves. So this is why I felt that the book could have been shortened up and it still would have been good. My other issue I had with this book was the ending. I thought it was too much like a Disney ending. Although, I do plan to go back and read book one to get to better understand Caro and Jude's relationship.

S. C. M. Paine is Professor of Strategy and Policy at the United States Naval War College. Paine is the author of Nation Building, State Building, and Economic Development (2010), The Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 (Cambridge University Press, 2003) and Imperial Rivals: China, Russia, and their Disputed Frontier (1996). She co-authored Modern China: Continuity and Change, 1644 to the Present (2010) and co-edited Naval Power and Expeditionary Warfare (2011), Naval Coalition Warfare (2008) and Naval Blockades and Seapower (2006).

Outstanding!

There are thousands of books written about the second world war. Maybe even a million. All aspects of the fighting, the operations and strategy has been described in so many ways that buying a new one almost always just add information to a subject that you have read about so many times before. It used to be that the Eastern Front was a weak area in the literature but after the fall of the Soviet Union that has been changing rapidly.

But there is one part of the whole war that has been and continue to be difficult to find good information on and that is the war in China. This huge part of the war is almost impossible to find any good information on. Until now. "The Wars for Asia, 1911 - 1949" by professor S.C.M. Paine is a fantastic book and reading it will open your eyes to a large part of the war that has until now been considered almost like a side-show.

Professor Paine writes about operations in China and the area surrounding it. It is a book on the strategic and operational level but it deals with the three important parts of the wars there: The Civil War, The War against Japan and Chinas role in the Global second World war. The Time span 1911 - 1949 is needed to understand it all.

I have seldom read a book that so clearly discuss and clarify what must be considered one of the most complicated part of the entire world war. It is not an easy read to follow everything in China and you must concentrate but the rewards are great. I started to take notes after 50 pages since I found so many interesting facts that I simply had to keep them in my files.

Not only does the situation in China gets a long overdue treatment but Professor Paine's work on Russia and Japan is extremely well done as well. There are parts of the Russian involvement in this area that came as a complete surprise to me and I am not easily surprised when it comes to that part of the World. How many have heard of the war between China and Russia in 1929 that ran for five months and where the Russians deployed 100 000 men with tanks and bombers?

Not only are the presentation of events outstanding but also the analysis that follows. The professor is very clear and few of the participants, on any side, gets a clean record. The Diplomacy of Josef Stalin towards China was at times far better than what he did on the western front. The Unbelievable way the Japanese decision process worked and it's result is an real eye opener. For many Americans it might be a surprise that the Japanese considered the attack on Pearl Harbor as a mere side-show to the real war in China.

If you make a list of the 100 most important books to read about the Second World War this one must be on it. If you make a list of just ten this is a very important candidate for that list too. It is that good.

If you like the complexity and detail of history this book is for you!

I write this review after only being 100 pages into the book. This book is great. I love how the author has researched and is detailed in writing about the complexities of what was happening in China during this time. He gives more than one view point thus helping you understand how not just America but Japan, China and other countries viewed the events from their individual perspective.

This book may not be for everyone but for those of us who love seeing the complexity of history and how all the political and military decisions combine into an intricate web that brought about the events that shaped Asia up to and after WW2, this is truly a great book. It fills in a gap especially for Americans so they can understand the events that lead up to Japan's war in China, the struggle between Communist and Nationalist Chinese which occurred at the same time as they fought Japan and Japan attacking the USA and much much more.

Now I just need to find a book about the forgotten Chinese that served as labor and eventually fought in WW1. If you know of any, please pass the titles to me as a comment. Thank you!

Greatly expanded my understanding of WWII

This book greatly expanded my understanding of WWII in several ways. First, I better appreciate Russia's foreign policy and its contribution to our victory over Japan. Second, I now understand that Nationalist China played basically same roll that Russia did for us in the European theater. It diverted about half the Japanese army, while we played island hoping across the Pacific. Finally, the book help me understand Japanese government and policies that moved it toward its own distruction.

Best DMZ TPB Yet!

The book consists of different takes of a bloody event taken place in DMZ. If you haven't read any DMZ before, you can still jump in and enjoy this volume. Different artists that worked on this volume are also amazing to clearly show different POVs.

Excellent comic series, excellent installment

I can't really say that this book is getting better and better, because Volume 2 (Body of a Journalist) was probably better... but man, this is good stuff! It's a fast read, extremely relevant, fairly stand-alone, and one of the few books I'm recommending whole-heartedly lately.

Awesome Book

This book was great! I was never bored once, the characters were interesting, there were lots of shocking events and the ending was great! I had questions about who the killer was... I didn't think it was very obvious. I liked it alot and I reccomend it to any reader who enjoys a teen horror novel. I think it would make an awesome movie!

A group of nine people invited to a weird party.

My book is about a group of nine people invited to a HalloweenParty, this is the title of the book. They were invited by a girlthat never payed much attention to them. The girl's name was Justine. She put invitations to the party in everyone's locker at school. The invitations showed a picture of a coffin that said "reserved for you!" on the inside. All the people that received the invitations were puzzled. They didn't know why they were the only ones invited. Everyone asked if they could bring their dates, but Justine said no. The nine people were scared because the party was at a haunted house on Fear Street. It was known as the Cameron Mansion. People have been known to have vanished from there and people were also murdered there. Two people that knew Justine, wanted to go to the party. She said no. They were furious.
During the party, people were hurt, and maybe even killed. Some people noticed that there was a killer running loose in the house! People started panicking, but didn't want to tell anyone because no one knew who the killer was.
I liked this book because it was a mystery until the end. Also, I enjoy scary stories. The best part was when the lights went out during the party. As I was reading the book, I felt like I was at the party. Also, I felt like I was in the room when the fire was lit. At the end, when the story got scary, I felt scared too. I've read a lot of books written by R.L. Stine. I think this was the scariest one too. I'm planning on reading more.
Did I keep you in suspense? If I did, then you will want to read the book to find out what happens next.

Mr.Stine wrote a wonderful book every young adult should read this book this is not only a wonderful book it is also a thrilling book and just in time for halloween Mr.Stine has never written a better book and futhermore every fear street book is wonderfully writen and scares alot out of you The idea of plot in this book is brillant and the best I recommend Mr.Stine to any young adult or adult who would like to read an exiting book!

We’ve had some questions from readers regarding the use of the term “calcium carbonate,” which is listed as an ingredient in a number of the diets found in this book, and therefore wanted to clarify what is meant by this ingredient. Baking soda comes in two forms: sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate. The sodium bicarbonate version is widely available as “baking soda” and is commonly used in baking, but none of the recipes in this book use it as an ingredient.  The calcium carbonate version of baking soda is sometimes sold as “baking soda substitute” and sometimes referred to as simply “baking soda.”

To avoid confusing sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate, any time the calcium carbonate type of baking soda has been used in a diet in this book, the ingredient includes the specific term “calcium carbonate.”  There are several manufacturers of calcium carbonate baking soda; for example, Amazon carries the Ener-G Foods product baking soda substitute. Calcium carbonate can also be sold for garden use, which is non-food-grade, so to avoid the use of the garden product in foods, the term “baking soda” was used in this book instead to indicate that readers should be sure to select a food-appropriate ingredient.

Book DOES contain a DANGEROUS error!

A DANGEROUS error appears, several times, in "Home Prepared Dog & Cat Diets (Second Edition)." The error is alarming enough to cast doubt on the book's entire contents and credibility. I have a copy of the book in front of me as I'm writing this review, so I'm not mistaken.

In Chapter One, on page 8, under the subtitle, "Assessing a Homemade Diet Recipe," author Patricia Schenck discusses what a homemade diet recipe should include. After mentioning carbohydrates, proteins, fat, calcium and calcium/phosphorus supplements; Schenck claims, "Calcium carbonate (baking soda) or bone meal (source of calcium and phosphorus) should also be present."

Calcium carbonate IS NOT baking soda. Yet Schenck claims it is, on page 8 and throughout the book.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is often used as a dietary calcium supplement.
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). Baking soda IS NOT useful as a calcium supplement. It's often used as a leavening agent in baking.
Calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate are chemically different and will affect a dog's body differently when ingested.

Many of the recipes for dog and cat diets in "Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets (Second Edition)" use baking soda as an ingredient (For example, dog diet recipes on pages 416, 417, 424, and 425; and cat diets on pages 473, 498, 499 and 504). Each time "baking soda" appears in the ingredient list it's defined in parentheses as, "calcium carbonate." Schenck did not just make a one-time flub in Chapter One. The author mistakenly defines baking soda as calcium carbonate throughout the book.

Schenck includes baking soda in dog and cat diet recipes specifically formulated for animals with renal disease, each time indicating the baking soda is, "calcium carbonate."
According to the Merck Veterinary Manual online, animals with acute kidney disease may indeed be treated by restricting their dietary phosphate intake and feeding them sodium bicarbonate (baking soda); to counter high levels of blood acidity. This might explain why Schenck includes baking soda in her recipes for renal disease. However, it doesn't explain why she refers to it as calcium carbonate. Nor does it explain why she claimed, in Chapter One, that either baking soda or bone meal should be present in every homemade diet recipe. She probably meant either calcium carbonate or bone meal should be present in every homemade diet recipe, yet she said "baking soda" and that's a serious error.

I started researching canine health and nutrition in 2002. I've fed my vibrantly healthy, 11-year-old dog homemade meals for almost eight years. I've blogged about it for two years to show other dog owners how healthy a home-fed dog can be and how easy it is to be a Doggie Chef. I'm not a doctor of veterinary medicine, so I rely on books like Schenck's for advice and guidance.

Perhaps the error in this book was an editor's mistake. Even so, the author should have caught it when proof reading the book. I realize even the most qualified people can make big mistakes sometimes, and I'm sorry for Schenck if that's what happened. I appreciate Schenck's good intentions to write a book to help pet owners prepare nutritious homemade meals. Yet something should be done to get the word out to the public about this error. Perhaps the author can explain/correct it on her website and that website could be linked to this book's Amazon listing. Well-intentioned pet owners may read part or all of this book, completely trust the author's expertise as a doctor of veterinary medicine, and inadvertently create homemade diet recipes that could harm their pet's health.

Such a dangerous error (calling baking soda calcium carbonate and suggesting baking soda should be added to homemade diet recipes for healthy dogs) leads me to question all the information contained in "Home-Prepared Dog & Cat Diets (Second Edition)."

Baking Soda SUBSTITUTE

This is in reference to all the baking soda comments. If you read every time baking soda is mentioned, they all very specifically state "baking soda substitute," not "baking soda". Baking soda is indeed sodium bicarbonate; baking soda substitute, which is what the book calls for, is calcium bicarbonate. By recommending "baking soda substitute", Dr. Schenk is in no way calling for the baking soda/sodium bicarbonate several reviewers claimed she is recommending. Again, Dr. Schenk very clearly calls for "baking soda substitute" or calcium bicarbonate,the key being the word substitute. She specifies calcium bicarbonate specifically so that sodium bicarbonate will NOT be used. These are very good and balanced home-made diets, but they only work if you read the ingredient list and follow it carefully, with no substitutions or short-cuts.

A life saver

My dog has a number of issues -- he is a senior dog with allergies and kidney concerns. His vet and I searched long and hard to find a diet that would work for him. The off-the shelf products either wouldn't work because of his allergies or were made by companies whose product I would not feed my dog or whose ingredients read like a pharmaceutical catalog. Through this book I have been able to find not only one, bug several diets that work for him depending on what is in season or is most readily available.

The ingredients in all of the recipes I've perused are generally easy to find. Most can be purchased through any grocery store. The supplements can be found at any vitamin or nutritional store. Unlike the original issues of this book, the measurements are all given in standards weights and volumes.

The book offers diets for a wide variety of medical conditions including for dogs or cats with cancer. It also has age specific diets -- puppyhoood, adulthood and seniors.

The author explains in length the nutritional requirements of dogs in different developmental stages and discusses how the diets address those needs.

Finally, the book offers an addendum that provides the detailed nutritional breakdown of each recipe, this, in addition to the diet specific summaries that follow each recipe. Each diet also comes with a list of ages and conditions for which the diet is appropriate.

I love the added piece of mind that comes from knowing that my dog's diet satisfies his nutritional requirements, but is also safe since I know everything that is in the food.

On a side note: Don't be misled or put-off by the comments on baking soda -- just buy calcium carbonate (CaC03) as the book specifies, rather than Sodium BiCarbonate (NaHC03), the latter of which is your typical grocery store variety. Calcium Carbonate can be found at the aforementioned health and vitamin stores.
