A magnificent book. Grippin, enthralling & completely unique

Following Graham Swift's well-deserved successes with Waterland & Last Orders, I'm amazed this book remains virtually unknown. It is one of my all-time favourites, repaying multiple readings.
It works on several levels - as a straight thriller (is the narrator really paranoid? is Quinn insane? what's the truth about Prentice Snr, a mute inmate in a mental hospital), as a wonderfully vivid decriptive novel (Wimbledon, the London underground & Eastern France are all brought to life magnificently), a terrific gallery of characters, a study on family relations, guilt and expectations ... I could go on.
My advice: buy it, read it & pass it on to your friends.

The one I have been looking for.

For the past 40 years or so I have been looking for what I regard, the perfect book. This is it. I found it on my shelf, of all places. It had been sitting there for years ignored and overlooked for the more preferable reads, the bigger-better authors who garner the biggerst audience. Swift is magic. His main character, Prentis, is as I would draw him, ignomatic, real, diabolical. The book has a lurid, eeire feel to it, not creepy, but weird, the way I like it. Easy to follow but not shallow by any means. Anyone who becomes bored by reading Swift is a moron. There is a pile of substance between those simple lines, it just takes a littel intellect to find it.

En esta hermosa novela, Rosario Castellanos nos relata la vida que llevo en la hermosa y colorida ciudad de Comitan de las Flores , Chiapas; El titulo de la obra es como se conocía a la ciudad en tiempos prehispanicos el cual significa "nueve estrellas", esta increible mujer narra sus sentimiento desde el punto de vista de una niña criada por una mujer tzetzal, la nana Rufina, viviendo las experiencias y puntos de vista del indigena mexicano. Una frase que se quedara grabada para siempre es -"...Y entonces, coléricos, nos desposeyeron, nos arrebataron lo que habíamos atesorado: la palabra, que es el arca de la memoria...".

A Beautiful Novel

This novel, written by one of Mexico's most famous modern poets, illustrates many of the issues present in Mexico after the revolution. The story follows the life of a young girl growing up in Chiapas after the revolution. The author writes poetry into her prose, combining the oral tradition with the politics surrounding the change of power, to create a subtle yet powerful novel about the changing face of Mexico.

Beautiful story based on personal experiences

Rosario Castellanos, one of Mexico's greatest writers, does a wonderful job of portraying life in ancient Chiapas. Specifically in Comitan, Rosario's hometown, and in Chactajal,which is a few miles off Comitan. Balun Canan(meaning '9 candles') is the name given by the ancient Mayan civilizations to Comitan.
This novel is rich in historical significance, but also based on the author's personal daily experiences which makes this novel truly enjoyable. Rosario shares her life as a young girl alongside her nanny and her family. Both Rosario and her nanny narrate this story at certain points, allowing us readers to infer their opinions and views on certain problems and dilemmas, which refer to a hard time in the history of Mexico. A hard time concerning the rebellin of the indian population, and the clear preocupation of those who were their owners, the white population.

About the Author
Nancy Rue is the author of more than one hundred books for adults and teens, including the Christy Award-winning The Reluctant Prophet, Unexpected Dismounts and Healing Waters (with Steve Arterburn), which was the 2009 Women of Faith Novel of the Year. She travels extensively—at times on the back of a Harley—speaking to and teaching groups of women of all ages. Nancy lives on a lake in Tennessee with her Harley-ridin’ husband, Jim, and their two yellow Labs (without whom writing would be difficult).

This book just became my all-time most favorite!

Allison has gone quite a few miles with God. She's got two houses full of former prostitutes, a boutique for them to work in, and an orphan she's adopted. But God's not done with her yet. When He says "Go another mile" she goes. But it's not easy. There's a cost to following God with your whole heart. Those who seek after evil are opposed to everything she does and will stop at nothing to see her destroyed.
I've always been a voracious reader and never been able to declare a favorite. Until now. I relate so well to the character and her heart for the lost but her desire to say "that's enough" or "this is as far as I go". But God didn't set limits on how far our love should go. He just keeps saying to go another mile.
As with all her books, Too Far To Say Far Enough is extremely well written. It holds adventure, romance, joy, sorrow and hope. It challenges you, delights you, encourages you and makes you want to go the extra mile. I HIGHLY recommend this book! If you buy 1 book a year, let this be this one!

A satisfying conclusion to a soul-stirring series

Too Far to Say Far Enough is a satisfying conclusion to what has been an entertaining and soul stirring series. Allison Chamberlain is a character who will long live on in my mind, a Harley-riding prophet who develops into a woman not to be trifled with! Her heart for justice and her capacity for love as she connects with former prostitutes and abused runaways are definitely things to admire. I loved the new characters introduced in this book, and celebrated along with the characters as I witnessed adoptions and victories over evil and watched a romance come full circle. Nancy Rue has managed to successfully combine an action-packed contemporary drama with a message that will long stay with me, a challenge to get out of my comfort zone and put faith into action caring for the orphans and widows of the world, the lost souls who have no one else who will care for them, the abused and marginalized.

Readers who have followed Allison through the first two books in the series are going to greatly enjoy meeting up with her in the final book, and the conclusion is wonderfully satisfying while leaving much to the imagination about how the future will ultimately play out for Allison and her son Desmond and Chief and all the rest of the characters. I highly recommend both this book and the entire series and award it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Definitely a book club choice

This is the third in The Reluctant Prophet series, and makes me want to go back and re-read the first two. Allison has more courage than I do, but made me realize, again, that God never asks us to do anything that He won't give us what we need to do it. Most of us won't ride Harleys and take prostitutes into our homes as Allison did, but you can't read these three books without wondering if you are doing enough for God. Nancy Rue is an incredible author and it is very obvious that she did her homework on this series. A friend of mine insists that Nancy IS Allison, that she actually did all those things. Very good author!
Allison is far from perfect, and more than once wants to call it quits. "Please God, haven't I done enough?' Don't we all ask that from time to time? If I were in a book club, I would highly recommend this series. Very thought provoking, and once you start reading, almost impossible to put down. There are several chapters that will definitely get your heart pumping! This third in the series brings a satisfying conclusion to the series, but I can't help but wish there was at least one more. I'll miss Allison.

Finally! The Demon Trilogy in One Package!

In 1971, Ra's Al Ghul was created. An opponent of the Batman that, unlike his many other rouge villains created: Ra's was extremely intelligent, honorable, well financed, patient, unyielding, and had vast respect for his adversary. Ra's was an opponent that was ahead of his time; enough so where he has gone on to be what many consider Batman's greatest foe, even over The Joker (and if Joker is #1, then Ra's is a close second place). Ra's is even considered one of the greatest super villains in comic history. That's impressive, considering he was created in the mid-Silver Age of Comics, unlike many other famous villains created in the Golden Age and early Silver Age. And where as Batman: Tales of the Demon is the first Ra's stories told (and a definite pick-up for any fan of Ra's), there is only a hand-full of select definitive Ra's stories out there...until now...and finally collected together for the first time as "The Demon" trilogy!

"Batman: Son of the Demon" tells the story of Batman and Talia Al Ghul looking into an powerful organization that's headed by a man named Qayin; a man who wants revenge against Ra's Al Ghul since he was a child. Both Batman and Ra's can't get Qayin without the others help, so they form a union to hopefully catch Qayin. What we get is story what many consider one of the best Bat stories ever written. A James Bond-esque action story, with the link and metaphors of Batman being Ra's own son is heavily prevalent, and unlike anything done before, as well a powerful look at the love between Talia and Batman.

"Batman: Bride of the Demon" is predominantly about Ra's search for a bride, all the while planning the biggest scheme conducted in his usual environmentalist way. Batman has to find a way to stop Ra's biggest plot yet. While not as impactful, or as clever as Son of the Demon or Birth of the Demon, this is still a great read. A lot of action, and definitely more about the battle of wits between Ra's and Batman, like a cat and mouse game.

"Batman: Birth of the Demon" is the last story of "The Demon" trilogy, and involves Batman spending years trying to stop Lazarus pits from being found to finally stop Ra's Al Ghul. What we get though, is a majority of the read is the origins of Ra's Al Ghul. Again, considered one of the best Ra's stories every told, we get a complete origin: Ra's birth name, rough birth date, early profession, ideology toward mankind and nature, and even his name itself, "The Demon's Head". It's all here.

Owning this book is the holy grail of Ra's Al Ghul tales you could own, and is definitely among some of the best material in the Bat catalog. Originally released in order of 1987, 1990, and 1992 respectively...this is came out among the same time period as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One, Batman: Arkham Asylum (15th Anniversary Edition), and Batman: A Death in the Family, so the maturity and content match the time period of the Batman, as well as Ra's himself. Where as Batman: Tales of the Demon started it all, it had little to do with modern day Ra's or Batman's dynamic relationship. These books on the other hand were the prime influences that material like BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES and most modern day Bat stories took inspiration off of. That speaks volumes, and the fact each book individually sets the bar for Ra's and Batman's relationship further cements this book as a pickup. Even the writing and art hold extremely well for today's times! If that's not enough, each book at my comic shop individually is around $40 apiece (meaning $120 for all 3!) so having it here in one nice package is a no brainer of a pick-up.

If you're worried about continuity as well: don't fret. Grant Morrison's run on Batman Batman and Son actually recons Son of the Demon into continuity, but you really don't need to do that unless you want to. Although it's called "The Demon" saga/trilogy, each of the 3 stories is stand alone tales from each other, yet they leave just enough ambiguity and vague hints that each tale could connect to one another...but again, that's not needed. And for anyone who regards the concept of Son of the Demon, where Batman joins Ra's (we all know Batman would probably never do that) it's a hypothetical story that was once considered a "Elseworlds" story, so please don't get uptight over that story plot.

As for extra's, there's barely anything. No introductions and you get the original paperback collection covers. If your one for extras, there's really nothing here, but it's sub-marginal compared to the rest of the contents.

BATMAN: BIRTH OF THE DEMON is a rare book for Batfans: it's good for new readers on Ra's Al Ghul, a must for collectors, has some of the best or if not the best Ra's stories on the market, and it has a price you just can't beat considering what's here. And even if one of the stories doesn't do it for you like the others do, you'll still find something from the other stories. And most of all, this is a phenomenal case study on one of Batman's greatest foes, as well as their deep relationship. Pick this up detectives.

One of the greatest Batman stories of all.

Birth of the Demon is possibly the greatest Ra's Al Ghul story of all time, and certainly the best post-crisis tale featuring him. Batman has discovered a way to use Ley lines to find out where Ra's will have to dig his Lazarus Pits, which are responsible for his prolonged life. This leads to an account of Al Ghul's history, his discovery of the Lazarus Pits, and how he became the man he is today. The inevitable confrontation between Ra's and Batman is spectacular. Denny O'Neil, one of our finest writers, agains demonstrates his complete mastery of the written word, and artist extraordinaire Norm Breyfogle provides the breathtaking painted art. This is a magnificent tale; if you're a Batman fan, it's required reading.

Excellent primer on Ra's Al Ghul

There are three stories contained in this collection: "Son of the Demon", "Bride of the Demon" and "Birth of the Demon". Each story was originally published as a one-shot by DC in the late 80s - early 90s, and they're all very enjoyable. "Son of the Demon" is a tale where Batman and Ra's team-up to stop a terrorist with a link to Ra's past. Throughout the tale Batman and Ra's form a bond in a way and Batman even fathers a son (Damian, who is now Batman's latest Robin). This story strengthens the odd familail element present in all stories featuring Ra's and Batman, showing how they have simiarl goals, but can never really see eye-to-eye. Also, like most great Ra's stories it makes Batman into the globe-trotting James Bond-esque hero of the story, and that's always a fun depature from the grim, street level crime stories he is usually a part of.

However, the centerpiece of this collection is "Birth of the Demon". This story is worth the price of the collection alone. With a story by Denny O'Neil and painted art by the excellent Norm Breyfogle, this story follows the origin of Ra's Al Ghul and tells us of the tragedy that lead him to become the man he is now. I won't give away anything contained here, because I feel it's best to go in cold. You'll appreciate it much more that way. This is a must read for any Batman fan though. Often-times retroactive origin stories tend to be disappointing, or take away from the impact of a character. However, O'Neil is talented enough and has enough faith in his creation that he creates an excellent, nuanced story for Ra's, and it only gives him more dimensions as a character.

Best one yet!

December Dread is a bit darker in tone, I feel, but it's also my favorite in this series so far. Being privy to the serial killer's thoughts and actions was creepy but in a good way. :) Lourey has done an amazing job of making Mira a very believable character with so much depth--and very likable! Mira faces some of the demons in her past, and it will be interesting to see how this affects her in future books. Loved it and can't wait for January!

That said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the books in this series. I grew up in a small town central Minnesota location just a few towns away from Mira James' Paynesville! The books are a joy to read and I spend quite a bit of time chuckling and having to explain certain things to my non-Minnesotan husband. I can't wait for the January book! I recently acquired a kindle and my first purchases were all her books through November. I reserved my copy of the December book and devoured it in just a few days!

Never Disappointed!

I have ready every single book and I still can't get enough of Mira and her escapades.
This was a very good read and of course, I read it in one sitting. I can't seem to put the books down.

Reduced Nekoda makes for a Better CON book

Summary: Nick just found out his girlfriend, Nekoda, is set out to kill him. And with Casey all over him, that is the end to that relationship. When Nick starts hearing voices and chandelier's stop dropping on him... Nick wonders, could she already be trying to kill him? Or is something else going on?

Review: I was dreading this book. I love Nick and every reincarnation of him (squire, DH, Ambrose, kid). But the Chronicles of Nick (CON) series drives me crazy. The last two books were only marginally okay. However, this book is an appreciated improvement.

I think the biggest issues I have with the books is I find Nick and Nekoda's relationship unbelievable. Thankfully, they were broken up through most of the series. Nekoda's absence contributed greatly to the quality of this book as we saw Nick focus on his other relationships. Romantically, he was almost involved with Casey (but was he? ::wink wink::), and there were hints of a possible future with Brynna.

Inferno's pacing was very good. There was a good balance between the action, the history, and the developing story. We see a lot of Acheron in this book, and seeing their relationship develop breaks my heart (since I know what happens down the road). We get quite of bit of history on some of the other characters, like Caleb and Nekoda. We find out what Nekoda is, though, there remains a lot of questions unanswered. We met some new characters and met more Devereaux sisters. Tiyana, we met, and we know of her future... and how it was changed. I wonder if there is something there we are missing.

The ending of the book dropped the book from 4 start to 3 star. The same problem that shows up in the last two books show up here. The plot is wrapped up quickly, and you are left with an annoying cliffhanger. I have no clue on what to say about the epilogue. It's weird, and it's not the kind of cliffhanger that makes you want more. I don't typically read YA, and I wonder if it's a stylistic choice issue.

I am immensely curious about the thoughts of people who read CON books but haven't read the Dark Hunter books. Do they have a different perspective regards to Nick/Ambrose? I know the show/movie that will be produced first will be CON, and I think that will paint a much different picture.

Regardless, I was pleasantly surprised by this installment of Nick's adventures, and I hope the future books continue getting better.

As always I really enjoyed this book. Nick is growing into his new powers and has a new girlfriend. Or, does he? I really hate that we have to wait so long for the next book. I now have lots of questions and I look forward to some answers!

I love all of Sherrie's books, but what is up with the ending? Is this going to change all the dark hunter history as we know it?! WTH?!?!?!
