Good start but you will need more

Used this book for the April 2013 recert exam. I read this book cover to cover and it is definitely a good start. I do not practice Family Medicine ( I work in an emergency room), so I do not use a lot of this material each day. This book brought me up to speed on the basic topics in Family medicine. There are quite a few typo mistakes, however they are easy to catch. Very little obstetrics on the exam (unless you choose that module). You can almost skip that section. However, you will need to review question/ answer format that is similar to the ABFM exam format. This book is NOT at all in the same type of question/answer format that is on the exam. I highly suggest you review every question on the ABFM website from the last three years In-training exams. These questions are exactly the same format (also some identical questions were on the exam this year) as the true ABFM exam. There are hundreds of other similar question on the AAFP website, however you need to be a member to access those questions. Reviewing the ABFM/AAFP questions is probably more important, I think, than studying this book. I did both and scored very high on the exam. However I probably over studied. I started about three months before the exam.

Some flaws with this book

I really dislike the fact that the chapter titles often give the diagnosis away! For instance, a patient is presented with symptoms of weakness, visual loss, sensory loss, and he first question asks what the diagnosis is. The chapter is titled "multiple sclerosis"...

I'm also finding a few errors in the answers. The written answer will indicate one letters but they state another. For instance on pg 252 it asks the most common cause of meningitis in AIDS. The answer is e, cryptococcosis, but the answer key on pg 257 says c, coccidiomycosis....

Outstanding layout, clarity

I am a fourth year allopathic medical student on my primary care rotation.

I decided to purchase this book as a way to help guide my reading after the daily clinics. This review works better than the standard textbook because the format encourages active learning. The questions are answered in full detail with brief references to the landmark trials that set the standard of care discussed. In academic medicine, this sort of knowledge is a must.

I enjoy the outlines at the end of each chapter as well. They condense the major concepts that are to be retained. And everything is extremely high yield. If a patient walks in with arm pain, nausea, and crushing substernal pain, you will know precisely what tests to order and what steps to take. The authors put considerable effort into discussing the interventions that must be taken with a diagnosis--something that a resident or senior medical student must learn.

My only concerns are over the occasional misstatements and spelling errors. However, these are easily recognized by readers with some graduate health professions education (eg: referring to elevated anion gap acidosis as "hypernatremia" in the diabetes chapter).

Furthermore, some updates are needed as well. In question 20 on page 22, there is a reference to the endocannibinoid modulator "Rimonabant." This drug is no longer being manufactured due to concerns over suicidal ideation side effects.

Not specific enough

Good history and background on the breed, but it would have been helpful to have more specific information. For example the need to deter heavy barking is mentioned, but no suggestions are offered on how to do this. This breed also tends to be sensitive, with highly honed training instincts, so information on what training techniques work best would be useful.

One of the best Social Security books ever

I was the Commissioner of Social Security under three Presidents (Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon), I began working on Social Security on January 1, 1939, and I have read just about every book written on the subject. The Battle for Social Security is the best Social Security book to come out in a long time, and indeed is among the best ever written on the subject. It is a lively and highly readable journey through the establishment of Social Security, its expansion, and the present attack on the program's principles. Written in an accessible style, it will inform all readers, nonexpert and expert alike, about the dramatic history of Social Security and why the program should remain as it is currently structured. I urge everyone with a stake in the present battle over Social Security - that means everyone - to read this book.

Clarified choices for American voters and policymakers

The Battle for Social Security reads like a fast-paced novel, but with the unique advantage that you can read it in any order. Skipping way ahead to the final chapter From FDR's Vision to Bush's Gamble (chapter 17) you find a six-page summary of the entire book, while The Ideal, Pain-Free (for Almost Everyone) Way to Strengthen Social Security (chapter 16) outlines the author's favorite plan to keep Social Security solvent for the long term.

Each chapter tells its own engaging story. The All American Program (chapter 10) recounts the Eisenhower years and the Hobby Lobby; Social Security's Grandfather (chapter 2) explains how John R. Commons' groundwork influenced the people who would advise FDR; Bold Woman, Cautious Men (chapter 4) brings to life the audacious role attorney Barbara Armstrong filled amid the economists and actuaries who crafted FDR's blueprint for Social Security; and Aging Gracefully (chapter 13) describes how the deal was struck by Republicans and Democrats on the commission led by Alan Greenspan (who hired the author as his executive assistant). On signing the compromise legislation in 1983, President Reagan said it "demonstrates for all time our nation's ironclad commitment to social security." A Leninist Strategy (chapter 14), cites plans of some libertarian think tank scholars in the early 1980s to wage "guerrilla warfare against the Social Security system and the coalition that supports it" by a strategy to promote private accounts for young workers and "detach or at least neutralize" older Americans. Accessible, well-researched, and inspiring

This book is different from anything I have ever read on this subject (and I have read widely in the field). The Battle for Social Security is deeply researched, entertainingly written, and full of insight about the history and political values of the program. The author, who is very highly qualified, obviously believes in those values, but this book does not involve mindless cheering for Social Security, or knee-jerk Bush bashing. Instead, this work thoughtfully and powerfully details the program's creation and expansion, and explains all the very good (and quite traditional) reasons why it remains popular with most Americans. Chapter 16 has some excellent ideas about how to keep Social Security solvent for many years without going down the destructive road of private accounts. If you want a pleasant path to a profound understanding of Social Security, this book is for you.

Great SF with Human Characters -- or are they?

The title story of this collection, When Shadows Fall, starts out slow and dismally, appropriately setting the scene on Earth, which is depleted of natural resources and barely fit to sustain life. The few remaining humans send out teams to recruit help from colonies on other planets and the story has an ending which is well worth the read.
The other two stories, "Tough Old Man" and "Battling Bolto" are also good and have endings you don't quite expect -- you won't be disappointed!

Fun Trilogy of Pulp Shorts from Galaxy Press!

In a continuing effort to republish the fiction of writer L. Ron Hubbard, Galaxy Press put out "When Shadows Fall," a short anthology of two space stories from the 1940s.

The first story in this anthology, "When Shadows Fall" is an indictment of colonization, where the colonizer, committing atrocities on its citizens, itself gets back the "karma".

In a future where the Earth is dying, both as a planet and as a people, the few citizens left, in an apathy, desire to get in touch with their now-rich colonies across the stars. But the citizens across the stars want nothing to do with Earth's demands to help it. Bummer!

What I liked about the story was not only the clear criticism of those who ruin a planet and therefore their own lives, but also that there is hope. One can rise out of the ashes, if only to remind those who could help that the civilization, though now broken, was once great and could be great again. Well-written.

"Tough Old Man" is about a young recruit who is sent to work under Keno, a constable who is taking care of the law on a frontier planet, known for its harsh environment but also its billions of dollars' worth of diamonds lying around. Moffatt at first thinks he's hot stuff until Keno shows him up. Good ending, with the bad guys captured and a twist ending.

"Battling Bolto" about a guy who works for a charlatan "Professor." This guy makes robot shells and sells them as the real thing, and takes off before anyone else finds out. To snag our hero, the Prof convinces him to pretend to be a robot and win fights. This is fine until a particular population creates their own fighter. Can "Bolto" fight his way out of this one?

Both stories are not badly done, and reflect the pulp fiction mania of the time.

Recommended, and not just for Hubbard fans, but anyone interested in some quick fiction to get through the day!

An Excellent Sci-Fi Story

This is one of those stories that really makes you think about the planet and what would happen when it does come to an end. It is somewhere the mind doesn't like to go, but it also makes you really appreciate the life we have now.

Imagine many years from now, when the planet is dying. There are very few people left living on it. Many are cast away by Mother Earth into the distant stars in hopes for a new, and better life. As the planet sits dying, the Earth's Grand President Makin, hopes to save the planet before it is to late. But finding the resources and others willing to help turns out to be quite difficult.

You would think many would want to do what ever it takes, but it seems no one across the stars is wanting to pitch in. But still with hope in his eyes, knowing what the planet is capable of, Makin pushes forward with a plan to save the planet.

You can't help but feel so much compassion with this story, as it is quite heart-breaking as everyone seems to just be giving up on a planet that still has so much potential. Though this story is science-fiction based, it does open your eyes and makes you want to do more for your planet now, while you still have the chance.

Also included in this story are the short stories "Tough Old Man" and "Battling Bolto". The first is of a planet that has both extreme pros and extreme cons, and the other is an exciting story about a man who builds and sells robot shells. Both are quite entertaining and fun!

So if you are looking for a science-fiction story that really makes you think about our planet's future, then I completely recommend When Shadows Fall.

Good way to do a lot of Micro questions if it's your weak subject.

I had a hard time studying for Step 1. I found this book helpful in allowing me to go over questions that were focused on microbiology itself. The book is organized into sections based on different bugs/fungi so you can work on particular subjects that you are weak in. Also the explanations provided are helpful. The book is good for helping to verify if you are actually grasping what you are learning. I would recommend the book if you have the extra time to spend on Micro. It would be best to work through it over an extended period of time. It is not useful for cramming.

About the Author
Kenneth S. Latimer, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVP, is a veterinary clinical pathologist at Covance Laboratories, Inc. in Vienna, Virginia and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Pathology at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine in Athens, Georgia. He has over 32 years of experience in the specialty of veterinary clinical pathology in academic, research, private practice, and industrial settings.

Absolute gem

This is the most heavily consulted volume on my shelf as a nonclinical toxicologist. Once I had been trained well enough in the fundamentals (clinical pathologist mentorship and Meyer & Harvey 3e, which I still regularly consult), I found the fourth edition of this text absolutely invaluable after I bought it a few years back. Once I found out the fifth was being written, it was all I could do to wait for it!

For those who are unfamiliar with the text (as one complaint reflected for the last edition), it follows a "dry" outline format: this is by design. It is an organization of often highly ambiguous or pleiotropic phenomena into a rational format for interpretation of clin path data- beautifully uncluttered. It is probably fair to say that it isn't intended as an introductory treatment of clinical pathology. For the latter purpose, scientists without clinical backgrounds should read the outstanding Chapter 26 of A. Wallace Hayes 5e, by Drs. Bob Hall and Nancy Everds. Especially if you have never had the treat of working closely with clinical pathologists.

Having received and exercised the fifth edition for several months, I'm very pleased that the transition to the new edition has been the result of seamless improvements. There was considerable updating and augmentation of content without losing sight of the volume's scope. For example, the chapter on erythrocytes has been substantially improved by Dr. Charlie Brockus, with expanded differentials and relevant tables.

Another benefit is that now I have the still excellent 4e at home for less frequent consultation there!

Do NOT get Kindle edition!

I've been using the hardcover version of this laboratory reference book for many years and it is my "go to" book for trying to interpret abnormal values on laboratory tests. Since I work at many different clinics I've been carrying the book around with me. Just got a new Kindle Fire HD and was excited to download the Kindle version so I wouldn't have to haul the book around anymore - but discovered the Kindle edition has NO PAGE NUMBERS. This means the index in the back (which is where I always start my search) is useless. You can't look up "albumin" and then go to the page which will give you differentials for low (or high) albumin. And if you try typing in what you're looking for in the "search" function, most of the searches find nothing. (For instance, I typed in "phosphorous" to see where it was discussed in the book and the search came back "no matches found.") Plus who wants to waste time typing out long medical words?

In short, the Kindle edition is useless unless you just want to do some general reading through the chapters (which I personally don't have time to do). I wish whoever published it to Kindle had thought of how the book is actually used!

Great Reference

At first I did not like the note-style outline and lack of pictures, but after reading through a few chapters I found that the layout made organization quick and easy to understand. I definitely plan on taking this book with me after I graduate because it is a good reference text.
