I have gone through the process of starting a new venture and I can't think of anything important that isn't covered by Andy Freire's book. He has managed to put together a concise yet complete perspective on entrepreneurship in emerging markets.
I am about to launch a new business, and "Pasion por Emprender" has been a great review of the issues I will soon face again. Even from my recent MBA years, I don't recall a better book for someone who is about to start a new company.
Don't expect to get a checklist of things to consider in a start up, but rather something much more valuable; the experience and advise of one of Latin America's most successful entrepreneurs.

En América Latina, que el tema de creación de empresas con capital de riesgo se empezó a masificar hace uno cuantos años, un libro como este deber ser requisito para iniciar empresa. En el libro Andy cuenta sus vivencias, experiencias, como logró montar su empresa y como la vendió. ...but he turns that trick with pride

Graham Swift, Learning to Swim and Other Stories (Washington Square Press, 1982)
Graham Swift is something of a one-trick pony, actually, but the one trick he does he does exceptinoally well. This is less obvious when you're reading the man's wonderful novels-- Waterland, for instance, which someone will hopefully soon canonize as one of the classics of twentieth-century literature-- but when you get digging into a story collection, you realize that Swift, or a close family member, was in the throes of the nasty ending of a relationship while he was writing these stories. His main characters, at least those of an age to be so,
are almost alwast divorced men, and the tale of the leaving wife is either the main thread of the story or part of the circumstance leading up to the main part of the story. Swift just takes that tale and paints it with different hues.
Any fan of Mondrian or his brethren will hasten to comment here that different hues are usually enough to make the same thing interesting anew. Indeed, and such is the case with Swift's stories. Recognizing the similarity between the characters doesn't make them any less interesting, and it certainly doesn't lessen the top-notch quality of Swift's writing, which has
yet to flag in any book of his I've read even for an instant. The man is truly gifted.
It's likely the publication date will give some readers pause. Yes, it's a collection of short stories published during the nineteen eighties. And yes, that should set off justifiable alarm bells in the reader who's been turned off to eighties lit. But what characterizes the good eighties lit (Vanderhaeghe, Swift, McInerney on his good days) and separates it from the bad eighties lit (Ellis, McInerney on his bad days) is emotion. Rest assured that Swift has emotion in spades. While his stories cover much of the same territory as those of his contemporaries, Swift is not the detached observer who narrated most eighties fiction; he is down in the muck of emotion, and has no qualms about dragging the reader in with him.

Rewarding

Learning To Swim is a set of short stories by Graham Swift. Their focus is fundamentally and repeatedly on human relationships, especially those within the nuclear family. And though it would be wrong to suggest that Learning To Swim and the other stories delve deeply into the human psyche, it would also be wrong to dismiss them as light touches on the fabric of life.

In the title story, for instance, we have a family on holiday. The father is a proud achiever, very much the centre of attention, usually by his own demand. The mother is apparently a self-confident poser, beautiful and both conscious and proud of the fact. We feel there is potential for conflict here if, at any point, life does not work out exactly as these participants demand it should.

And then there's a child. Perhaps the child is the image of both parents, perhaps neither. The parents might compete over the youngster, but the parents might also be trying to impose themselves of on the growing personality. And so the child, itself, becomes a site of conflict, a conflict that is not voiced in any way other than a competition over its very identity. How might this appear from the child's point of view? It may be the case that these particular parents might not seek to canvas this position, since it might just conflict with their presumptions. But then the child might just have a mind of its own, and indeed its own life to live.

It is a simple idea and a small element of what surely would be a larger picture, but, even with its limited objectives, the story really does come to life. In a short space we come to know these people intimately. If we were to meet them, we might already think we can predict how they might behave, or even what they might say, since Graham Swift's characterisation is so carefully drawn.

The author's observations on and descriptions of relationships are consistently perceptive throughout. The pace may not often change appreciably, and the range of scenarios presented might not be great. But travel and new experience feature strongly in these texts and the characters often find themselves in places where they feel out of place, out of context and in need of change. Thus their reactions and decisions often surprise.

In The Watch the scenario shifts somewhat, as we are introduced to a family of watchmakers who, via their own creation, can not only measure time but also control it. This ability is passed from father to son with remarkable results. It seems that any commodity that we can access in abundance is automatically devalued. The science fiction element in The Clock is thus only a minor part of what remains a study of human relationships and aspirations.

Learning To Swim is a rewarding set of stories. In short spaces of time we get to know these people who become truly three-dimensional as well as emotionally complex individuals. Though the stories are not related, their intended similarity makes them better read as a group from beginning to end.

Rational,shrewd and truthful

A collection of short stories which make me wonder about the authenticity of life and living,marriage,relationship,kinship and many more. Graham Swift wrote with intense drama of people and events. His writing rational,shrewd and truthful,sometimes seem dark but also realistic. His stories touched on the meaning of faithful marriage, the importance of finding yourself,your identity and also painful truth of learning to be part of the society--practical versus idealism.
For example, in the title story Swift make readers looked at a couple from their respective point of view. How the husband and wife both at some points of their marriage wanted out but stayed on and continued to pretend as happily married couple. How they used their young son's swimming lesson as their source to avenge against each other... There is also an old doctor vent his anger(of his young wife's affair) on a seriously ill patient. He refused to acknowledge the fact that his patient is very sick,just like he don't want to face with the consequences of his wife is carrying another man's baby... Learning to accept and to live with what you got. Each stories some how convert a message in a painful yet truthful way of looking at modern days. Maybe this is life and it goes on.

Adaptation to Life

I've read ''Adaptation to Life'' several times over the past decade, and I'm not a mental health professional. It's extremely interesting to anyone who wants to learn more about the ego mechanisms of defense, yet is markedly different from the usual self-help tome authored by a psychiatrist or a social worker based on findings from his/her practice. Why? ''Adaptation to Life'' is based on the findings of a study of actual human beings from the time they graduated from college through late adult life (60 years old or so). That long-term view helps to illustrate that what might be construed as good adjustment to life in one's twenties might be less useful when one is over 50. Its main theme, that rather than being absolute and unchanging, mental health develops and matures over a lifetime, is reassuring. I've found the book useful as a ''guide,'' of sorts, to return to again and again as I grow older. The only shortcoming to ''Adaptation to Life'' is that the study did not include women. I'm curious as to whether the development and maturation of ego mechanisms of defense might be different for women than for men. But to dismiss this well-written book entirely for that reason alone would be a mistake; after all, many of the hurdles that must be addressed in the course of human development are the same for males and females. The final plus is that ``Adaptation to Life'' is fairly free of medical jargon and therefore an easy read for non-clinicians.

This book changed my life

This book is amazing. It provides concrete examples based on a wonderful study of a group of Harvard graduates of how different psychological coping methods helped people succeed or fail during their lives.

Its most important finding, in my view, is that peoples circumstances in life play no role in their eventual success or failure. Instead, it is the coping methods that people develop, and the positive effort they put in, that decide their outcomes and happiness.

Most chapters contrast 2 real people from the Harvard study, identifying the opposing psychological methods each used (i.e. one is a procrastinator and another gets things done) and shows how their lives played out. Their behaviors correlated directly with their happiness and success in life. The procrastinator wandered from one job to the next, did not have satisfactory relationships, and did not build wealth. The person who got things done succeeded in business and in personal life.

This book identifies the key mental characteristics necessary to adapt to life, using concrete examples based on a long-term study. It provides a positive message that the circumstances of these subjects birth and background did not matter nearly as much as how much effort they put into life. It is well worth reading.

On the other hand, it is worth noting that these graduates were predominantly white, at least middle-class, often Protestant, and were part of the "greatest generation" that as WWII veterans worked during a time when the US economy was booming.

Adaptation to Life

I purchase copies of this book by the dozen, as I frequently hand it out to friends and associates of all ages. Personally, I have read it at least three times since it first appeared, and I refer to it often.

The book is organized in alternating chapters of theory and case studies. The theoretical chapters are dense, but fascinating, and make a compelling case for the developmental sequence of what Vailliant calls "defenses" - i.e. adaptive mechanisms. The case studies are fascinating and often humorous, and make this an easy book to pick up and read over a period of time. Often I give the book to people who are unhappy with some circumstance in their life or in the lives of their children, stating that the message of the title is that there is no perfect passage through this life - we all face disappointments and setbacks. Therefore, our goal for ourselves and our loved ones should not be a flawless existence, but rather an increasingly mature adaptation to the inevitable setbacks.

Too many of the books on adulthood are depressing formulations of how everything falls apart after age 30. Who wants to believe that? Vailliant is much more encouraging, in that his thesis is that our 50's can be better than our 40's, our 40's better than our 30's. Sounds good to me (and in his follow up book "Aging Well" Vailliant takes the same cohort into their 80's, which can similarly be a time of growth and development.)

Not a bad read, but historically unreliable

The Spear Of Destiny - Trevor Ravenscroft

When I first picked this book up in the bookstore, I couldn't believe my luck in finding such an interesting work on The Spear Of Longinus, written by what at first appeared to be an author with at least some credibility. The subject matter of 'The Spear Of Destiny' is fascinating and the style is compelling. For the first couple of chapters, I thought that - despite the sensationalistic nature of the writing - there possibly may have been some truth to Trevor Ravenscroft's assertions.
In short, the author uses this book to present the beliefs and opinions of Dr. Walter Johannes Stein - who during WWII provided information to Winston Churchill about the supposedly occultic personalities of Hitler and other Nazi leaders - although it is difficult to discern what portion of the book is based on Dr. Stein's somewhat dubious recollections, and what is subjective speculation on the part of Ravenscroft.
One problem came for me, when I noticed that many of the more grandiose statements in the book are not referenced at all, and thus the reader has no way of verifying the authenticity of the author's claims. There are footnotes, albeit rather minimalistic, but these are mostly relating to quotes that can be easily verified or found readily in other common publications. It is also true to say that these (referenced) quotes do not for the most part help to further the cause of the book to anywhere near the degree that the unsubstantiated quotes might do, would in fact they be traceable to a reliable source. In addition to this, much of the evidence given in the book is drawn from the psychic visons of Rudolf Steiner and General Helmuth von Moltke.
Up until chapter five, the story seems almost plausible and is without a doubt a most compelling read for anyone who has an interest in the Spear Of Longinus, Nazi Germany, or the occult in general. However, by the end of chapter five, the book is becoming clearly predictable and filled with clichés; not to mention the fact that there are some obvious historical errors, such as Ravenscroft's claim that Hitler celebrated his thirty-third birthday in 1921 (page 113). The author also takes many unsubstantiated myths - such as Hitler having only one testicle (pages 172, 173) - to be proven fact. 'The Spear Of Destiny' also contains several quotes taken from Hermann Rauschning's 'Hitler Speaks', which according to acclaimed Hitler biographer Ian Kershaw, is "a work now regarded to have so little authenticity that it is best to disregard it altogether." (Taken from Hitler 1889-1936: Hubris)
Whilst Ravenscroft does not proclaim himself to be a christian, the reader gets the feeling that he certainly sympathises strongly with christian morals, and although the non-xian belief of reincarnation is central to the story, he always manages to tie this facet back into christianity or christian politics. One of the most frustrating aspects of this book is the author's tendency to portray all the supposed 'good guys' in the story as being the reincarnations of other 'good guys', and all the allegedly 'bad' characters as having been 'bad guys' in a former life. The fact that the plot of the story hinges around this detail certainly doesn't help to add to the credibility of the book.
For what it's worth, 'The Spear Of Destiny' is a good yarn and definetely quite provocatively written, but in my opinion, this is the extent of it's value. Historically speaking, the book is poorly researched and there are no where near enough references to substantiate the author's extravagant claims.

Incredible! Astounding! On Other Hand...

In the first pages of The Spear, Ravenscroft states flat out that he considers the third eye (AKA the pineal gland) to be a valid primary source for historical research. To complicate matters even further, Ravenscroft was describing the visions of Dr. Walter Stein, his friend and teacher who was dead by the time Ravenscroft began writing.
How you feel about the Spear of Destiny depends a lot on how seriously you take Ravenscroft's ideas on the 3rd Eye. Are you ok with someone writing history as seen in someone else's mystical vision or are you more the footnotesey type? The fact that a lot of Ravenscroft's quoted sources are out of print makes his ideas hard to check or corroborate.
Havng said all this, I really love the Spear of Destiny and I've lost track of the number of times I've given copies to friends. I love Ravenscroft's ideas, whereby WWII was really a conflict between famous 9th Century figures reincarnated after exactly 1000 years. Ravenscroft's WWII was a war between cosmic Good and Evil in their most absolute senses. It's all very Michael Moorcock/The Highlander and if anything, Ravenscroft's book highlights how sorely we need a bit of romance and myth in our times. Read it by all means. Maybe you'll take it seriously, maybe not. But you will certainly be entertained.

Bizarre, but interesting

I first read this book when I was in grade school. Nothing really sank in except that Hitler really was Satanic. Now, years later, with a broad background of scientific skepticism and studies into some Eastern philosophies and so-called New Age stuff, I came back to this book to take a second look.
What it is not is an "objective" (i.e. academic, scholarly) account of history. The author says outright that much of the material for the book came from astral travels or remote viewing or some other paranormal method, performed by a man named Walter Johannes Stein. Ravenscroft claims that Stein knew Hitler better than any other man. Moreover, the whole book is wrapped around a theme of the Spear of Destiny, and a legend that says that any person who possesses it will gain immeasurable power to rule and conquer. Linked with the Spear are such famous dictators as Constantine, Charlemagne, and Frederick Barbarossa.
Ravenscroft describes in great detail Hitler's descent into the occult and into nationalist, racist ideals, tutored by various other evil personalities. Hitler is depicted as a man who became obsessed with the Spear, convinced that he was the reincarnation of Frederick Barbarossa, and ultimately possessed by Lucifer.
Naturally, this is no mainstream history book. Its origins are so wrapped up in the Judeo-Christian mythology, and an occultic one in particular, that it's hard to say what sorts of distortions there might be. (I take it for granted that subjective means of gathering information, like remote viewing, are possible, but I also acknowledge that tremendous distortions can come about.) Ravenscroft asserts, for instance, that Tibetan lamas were recruited and set to work "to harness the powers of Lucifer to the Nazi cause." He talks about Lazarus, the man raised from the dead by Christ, as actually undergoing some kind of occultic initiation which failed.
At best, I can say that this is an extremely interesting story. Without knowing more about the official history of Nazi Germany and the official biography of Hitler, that's about as far as I'll go.

About the Author
Dorothy Strachan is a partner in Strachan-Tomlinson, a process consulting firm based in Ottawa, Canada. She has been a professional facilitator since 1974. Dorothy's practice is in three main areas: process design and facilitation, organizational interventions such as strategic planning and team development, and the creation of customized workshops and learning programs. She is the author of several publications in areas such as leadership development, facilitation, strategic planning, and effective coaching in high-performance sports. Strachan-Tomlinson has a special interest in the health sector.

An outstanding reference for facilitators, trainers, and leaders

As a facilitator and strategy consultant, I'm constantly refining and improving my approach to group decision-making, action planning, and facilitating difficult situations. After a few months of use, I'm certain that this book will remain on the top of my reference list for a long time to come.

Strachan opens with a couple of well-written chapters on questioning techniques and facilitation principles. Much of this has been covered elsewhere, but Strachan's synopsis is an excellent reminder while also being easily accessible and well-organized. The book then delves into how to use different types of questions for specific outcomes, with a wealth of real-world examples that would work in any corporate environment. From "follow-up" and "opening a session" to "addressing issues" and "thinking critically," each chapter breaks down the why's and how's of question design before listing samples, tips, real situations that have direct applicability in any number of settings.

Because every facilitation is different, having a deep arsenal of questions keeps the discussion productive while enabling the facilitator to be responsive, agile, and most of all, effective. Strachan's book does all this capably and comprehensively, without filler or fluff. Highly recommended for anyone interested in improving group dynamics on teams, in meetings, or in formal workshops.

Making Questions Work serves a similar, useful purpose for people involved in convening groups of people in order to help them reach a shared understanding of the nautre of the problem or opportunity facing the organization or community -- a rhyming dictionary for facilitation.

But the most original and intriguing ideas in this book are Sanders's thoughts about words and their meanings, as when he suggests that for a season we make explicit the meaning of consumers by replacing it with devourers, or that wilderness is a Sabbath of space rather than time, and we need both kinds of Sabbath because Earth could use a respite from our demands. A Conservationist Manifesto envisions a path toward a materially simpler and spiritually richer way of life. At present, merchants and mass media, politicians and pundits, agree in defining us as consumers, as if the purpose of life were to devour the world rather than to savor and preserve it. However appealing consumerism may be to our egos, and however profitable it may be for business, it is ruinous for our planet, our communities, and our souls. What I propose instead is that we imagine ourselves as conservers, as stewards of the earth's bounty and beauty.

We need to embrace a conservation ethic if we are to address such threats as the disruption of global climate, the tattering of the ozone layer, the clear-cutting of forests, the poisoning of lakes by acid rain, the collapse of ocean fisheries, the extinction of species, the looming shortages of oil and fresh water, and the spread of famine and epidemic disease.

How might we shift to a more durable and compassionate way of life? What models do we have for a culture of conservation? What changes in values and behavior would be required to bring it about? Where can we see it emerging in practice?

This book seeks answers to those questions. Ranging geographically from my home ground in southern Indiana to the Mount St. Helens volcano and Alaska's Glacier Bay and Minnesota's Boundary Waters Wilderness, and ranging culturally from the Bible to billboards, it maps the practical and ecological grounds for a conservation ethic. The roots of conservation go deep in America, back through such visionaries as Rachel Carson, Aldo Leopold, John Muir, and Henry David Thoreau; back through the frugal habits of the Depression and wartime rationing, through agrarian thrift and frontier ingenuity and the prudent advice of Poor Richard's Almanack; back through Quakers and Puritans, with their emphasis on simplicity; and even farther back to the indigenous people who inhabited this continent before it was called America. Drawing on this heritage, I seek to show that the practice of conservation is our wisest and surest way of caring for our neighbors, for this marvelous planet, and for future generations. --SRS

Very Thought provocative

I was in Bloomington at a bookstore and a friend recommended it to me during a weekend of camping at a near by state park. Very beautiful writing style, evocative, but not wordy. The topic is needed and Prof. Sanders adds another powerful voice to the argument for finding an alternative to mindless devourism.

A Call to Simplify Our Lives for a More Sustainable Existence

I am always interested in what people have to share about reducing our personal and collective environmental footprints especially in such a mad dog material consuming society as we have in most western countries and I was quite impressed with Scott Sanders' take on this. Sanders is Professor of English at Indiana U of Bloomington and writes/teaches quite extensively on conservation utilizing the lives of such thinkers as Henry David Thoreau, et al. to impress simplifying our existence by walking the walk. Sanders relates how he and his wife have settled into a life of community involvement by shopping locally, growing some of their own food and doing without much of the gadget trappings of the consumerist society. I was impressed by Sanders' explanation of expanding a frugal yet satisfying existence beyond himself to the community- "sustainable arks" and time is of the essence because of the "exponential" growth and decay of our hyper-consuming, resource depleting and polluting society. Much of Sanders ideas concur with Bill McKibben (End Of Nature, etc.), Gary Snyder (The Practice of the Wild, etc.), Barry Lopez (Arctic Dreams, etc.) and others. A good portion of this fine book covers writing about the ethics of sustainability. Kindred spirits make for expanding sustainable community arks- and the concept is catching on all over the globe.
