Satisfying

I pre-ordered the hardback...then changed the order to Kindle when it became available. And I am glad I did, because I ended up re-reading parts of this under the covers to keep the light from waking up my husband! It came out on a day that was busy for me so I had to read it in chunks, which I don't like much so I read the last part to know how it ended, then could control myself and read the story. Bad, I know, but I wanted to know what happened with Ruby & Lucas. And it is very satisfying, but no spoilers here.

I really hope Earlene keeps this series going. I like the Benni Harper books, and I enjoyed "Love Mercy" & "The Saddlemaker's Wife" (which is the first Cardinal book). Her characters live real lives and share that life with you.

If I get some money to spend on frivolity I might get the hardback anyway, just because I have a lot of Earlene Fowler books on my shelf, both hardback & paperback. But the Kindle versions make it easy to read them, and that's the best part.

A Must Read Author Produces Another Winner

I have been reading books by Earlene Fowler for years and could not wait for her latest release. It came out yesterday and I had it pre-ordered to arrive on my kindle. I was not surprised that I stayed up very late last evening to read it. It was again awesome. Earlene can take every day characters and convey their thoughts and emotions like no one else. The town of Cardinal seems so real and the situations so believeable that it feels like you are right there while reading the book. Ms. Fowler should be a much wider known author as she really can tell a story. I hated to see the book end and wish to see more of her work in the future.

The Saddlemaker's Wife is one of my favorite books, and this follow up is as good as the first. The characters are flawed but endearing. The smal town life feels real. Earlene Fowler's writing transports you into the lives of characters and their emotions. I'm not ashamed to say: I cried! I laughed!

I received this book free from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book, it kinda had it all! Love, lust, depravity, scandal, sex (a little bit), mystery, and some good ol' "extra senses". The dialog was pretty good, and the flow moved right along. There were a couple, and a very few at that, points that I had the "Stop reading, what is this crap?" moments... probably no more than 4 in the whole book. I.e. guy meets girl, and in that day, he starts thinking "blah blah blah the one" That give me serious pause. But honestly, these little... moments are few and far between. And because the rest of the book moved so well, they really don't matter.

Strong and Likeable Heroine

Cait Donnelly’s new Inner Edge series starts off with a bang. Now You See It combines two differently paranormal talented individuals and lets the sparks fly. Gemma is a strong, likeable heroine and well matched with the equally strong, mysterious hero Brady McGrath. The romance between these two is hot, tender, and emotional. The story line is well developed and even contains a few surprises. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Donnelly, but I have a feeling it won’t be my last. I enjoyed both the premise and the way the story came together. A very satisfying read on all levels.

Gemma Cavanagh is about to be a divorcee. She also has a newfound ability to make things disappear and reappear. She is in the midst of trying to pack up all of her soon to be ex-husband’s belongings when someone breaks into her house and hacks her computer. Calling her brother for help he sends mysterious former Navy Seal Brady McGrath to check out the situation. Brady, who has the ability to read feelings through touch, is at first a bit off putting for her. There is just something going on with him that she is not sure about. When the police show up at her door to inform her that her soon to be ex-husband has made her a widow and sees all the boxes of his stuff packed up they are immediately suspicious. Brady steps up to help her and before they know it they are running for their lives trying to escape a killer. If the two can work together to harness Gemma’s abilities and find a killer before the killer finds them they just might make it to their own happily ever after.

About the Author

Donna Kelly is the author of several cookbooks, including French Toast, 101 Things To Do With a Tortilla, 101 Things To Do With Chicken, 101 Things To Do With Tofu, 101 Things To Do with Canned Soup, and 101 Things To Do With a Toaster Oven. She lives in Provo, Utah.

Anne Tegtmeier has spent most of her life as a modern dancer. After growing up in Colorado, she graduated magna cum laude from the Boston Conservatory, where she received her BFA in dance. Since 2001, she has also worked as a licensed massage therapist. Anne has spent many years as a vegetarian and is a passionate amateur cook.

Vegan Staples

We wanted to include a few simple recipes for homemade vegan condiments, sauces, and staples. They’re easy to make and good to have on hand, whether for use in the dishes in our cookbook or in any other recipe you like. We think you’ll find that they’re much less expensive and much tastier than their storebought counterparts―not to mention far less processed.

Vegetable Broth

Makes 8 cups

This homemade version is simple to make and more fresh and flavorful than many store-bought broths. Make up a batch and keep some handy in your fridge!

2 large carrots, peeled and sliced into ˘-inch pieces

1 large onion, peeled and cut into 8 chunks

2 celery stalks, cut into ½-inch slices, leaves included

2 tablespoons olive oil

3 cloves garlic, peeled and smashed

10 white button mushrooms, quartered

1 small bunch parsley (about 20 sprigs), roughly chopped

2 teaspoons salt *

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper sauce

2 teaspoons pepper

3 bay leaves

8 cups water

Brown the carrots, onion, and celery in oil in a large stockpot over medium high heat, about 3 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and reduce heat to a simmer. Cook for 20 minutes. Turn off heat and let cool to warm then strain. Keep refrigerated in an airtight container up to 1 week.

* For a darker and more robust stock, delete the salt and add 2 tablespoons soy sauce.

My boyfriend and I decided to try the vegan thing, and I purchased this book. Has some great recipes and helps to see that even if you're vegan you can still eat... and well!

A good read

This was a good entertaining music-themed mystery to get cozy with! It is the second book by this author I have read. You don't need to know operas to enjoy it - but I suspect that if you do, you will have even more of a sense of familiarity with the main character than I did. With settings that cross Canada, biker gangs, on to Paris, and opera in the background there is lots of "stuff" to keep you interested. I recommend this book for those times when you want to kick back, escape and be entertained. I would look for more books from this author, because his music related themes definitely appeal to me. The one I read years ago involved a lost manuscript. I found it totally intriguing.

The Fallen One: Murder Mystery with a Musical Twist

Rick Blechta's latest mystery novel, The Fallen One, is another exciting read. Once you meet fragile but courageous opera singer Marta Hendriks and her eclectic collection of friends and colleagues, you will not want to say goodbye to them. Rick kept me guessing right up to the finale.

As a novelist and classical/jazz musician Rick takes his readers on an authentic backstage tour of the not-always-glamorous world of opera and its stars. He also takes you to what appear to be his favourite hangouts in Paris, Toronto and Montreal. The details ring true.

I highly recommend The Fallen One to you and hope you enjoy reading this mystery with a musical twist as much as I did. I give it 5 stars.

A new look at an old city...

Coming from the Northeast United States, I've lived in the Kansas City suburbs for the past 12 years. I've come to discover Kansas City on my own terms. I'm not really a short story fan, but Steve Paul, editor, presents Kansas City on his terms with the help of 15 contributors. Kansas City Noir, has all the stylish Hollywood crime drama with large doses of Hitchcock and Outer Limits.
The book is divided into three sections, "Heartland," "Crazy Little Women," and "Smoke & Mirrors" covering `bad boys' and `bad girls'. Each story is complete with great detailed character development, complete story plots, and seamy Kansas City style quirky and unpredictable endings. But in defense of Kansas City, I think most cities could have seamy ending stories. However, it's only in Kansas City that you will find blues, jazz at 18th and Vine, bar-b-que featuring Gates, Arthur Bryant's, Fiorella's Jack Stack, sports bars and crazy sports fanatics (Chiefs and Royals) tightly wound into a Midwest mode. But this collection of stories with its serial killers, police detectives, barkeeps, classic movie theaters goers, and other low life, not only touch upon violence, but also tap into human values although at times a little twisted. A fine collection, I look forward to reading more "Noir" editions.

Every story is not just good but excellent in Kansas City Noir

If you are not a short story reader this is an excellent collection to introduce you to the fine art of the short story. If you live in Kansas City you will savor this tasty literary morsels that aren't overly literary but original and riveting. I was extremely impressed with this collection and hope there will be a second edition. You will not be disappointed if you buy this book.

A Raw Noir of Crazy Bright Insanity and Dark Blues and Barbeque

The cover says it all - a polished Packard in the dim glow of city lights - Kansas City Noir is a classic fusion of film, music and food as true in the 40s as it is today. Set at the crossroads of the country, Kansas City is a jumping off place, and a nexus that draws you inexorably into its guts. Kansas City is a raw noir of crazy bright insanity and dark blues and barbeque.

There's three sections to the work: Heartland, Crazy Little Women and Smoke and Mirrors - I loved them all. It's hard to choose standouts, but I can't help but call out the absolute grief of Rodriguez's Good Neighbor and John Lutz's absolutely nutcase Thelma and Laverne (and Henry too). Last Night at the Rialto by Mitch Bryan is a wonderful tale of nostalgia and revenge and Charlie Price's Last Supper by Nadia Pflaum is spectacularly evil. I read Matthew Eck's The Softest Crime twice, a painful embodiment of fathers' sins visited upon their children.

Steve Paul, you've invited remarkable writers to write their Kansas City stories - thank you! and thanks too to Akashic for keeping them coming.

Pretty awful. Was purchased as a textbook for a class and it's not very helpful. The subject matter seems unorganized and overly complicated. Maybe as I get comfortable with material it will get better. I rarely use it and instead look up information on the internet for better understanding of topics.

Sparkles with glittering faery magic

I really enjoyed reading Faery Craft by Emily Carding. This is a book that I have been aware of and anticipating for several months, ever since seeing Emily Carding's awesome "Tarot of the Sidhe" and reading her excellent essay in "Both Sides of Heaven". It is clear from looking at her work that she is in touch with the Fey and is instrumental in bringing their energies into the world. I have not been disappointed reading Faery Craft and even reading it on my Kindle iPad app I am happy to say that the work captures that faery enchantment and sparkles with glittery magic across every page.

I have been practicing magic and pestering supernatural entities for quite a few years now, so am not approaching this book as a beginner, rather as someone who wants to learn more about a subject which (at least in my esoteric neck of the woods) is rather obscure.

Faery-lore is something where there are a lot of legends and references however very little actual information. Digging back into history there are more interesting accounts and several grimoires which have sections on dealing with faeries. However usually we are left with folklore and fairytales as the main body of information regarding these entities. It is a fleeting, frustrating subject to research however and the problem with older sources is that our perspective and culture has moved on, leaving some work rather dated. Emily Carding has done a superb job however and is a magical practitioner and a Priestess, so her contemporary perspective and work is invaluable. This book has been needed for quite some time.

The book begins by looking at what faeries actually are. This is possibly an impossible question however all the ideas that have been put forward in the past are discussed and explained with theories ranging from simple nature sprits to ancestors to aliens. Emily makes a great point when she considers the idea that rather than us considering faeries as "aliens" (in the ET sense), could we consider "aliens" as faeries and alien contact experiences as faery experiences? I do not doubt that we are looking at the same phenomena here perhaps seen from two different cultural lenses and turning the usual idea on its head in this way provides much food for thought. I wonder for example whether anyone has tried any of the usual anti-faery measures such as using iron during a UFO/alien experience.

Faery Craft is woven around a seven pointed star, each point corresponding to a specific branch of faery lore. Each point on the star corresponding to the concepts of Knowledge, Connection, Trust, Honour, Magick, Joy and Inspiration, each of these being important keys when discussing and interacting with the Fey.

I have already discussed "knowledge" above, which concerned what faeries are, as well as discussing the rules to follow when dealing with them (such as avoiding Faery Food) and remembering the correct etiquette when dealing with the good folk. Each chapter is quite substantial and loaded with lots of information, much more than I can do justice with here using a few brief words of description.

The second chapter "connection" looks at faeries in our landscape, discussing the types of elemental being out there and also placing some within the context of a year; a zodiac; so we know from the astrological sign behind them what type of qualities we might expect and perhaps when would be a good time to work with that type of being. This chapter led very nicely into the next, "trust" which then considered the underworld journey and using portals and gateways.

The next chapter "honour" then focused on devotional work and how to best honour and work with the Fey, so Carding discusses building a shrine and how to make offerings (including what not to offer for sound environmental reasons). Again I found that this chapter bridged very easily with the next, "magick" which looked at getting started with practicing magic and detailed (among much more) the magical directions and sacred spaces, how to cast a circle and create and use magical tools.

The next two chapters "joy" and "inspiration" then step out into the wide world and look at what is out there today. So there is a discussion on the different faery events and gathering which occur around the world and then a section on crafts detailing how to make your own garments, wings etc as part of a costume. I'll be the first to admit that faery wings do not suit my complexion, however a lot of people will find this chapter very useful as they cast their own faerie glamour! We then move on to the inspiration which the Fey have given humanity so much in the arts so we read about the work of people such as RJ Stewart, John and Caitlin Matthews, and Wendy and Brian Froud as well as the relevance of the work of JRR Tolkien. There is much more here as Emily Carding looks at a wide range of people working with Faery contacts today as artists, magicians and writers.

Finally this is all tied together with a final chapter "balance" which contains a septagram working and a final fairytale loaded with meaning and inspiration

Each chapter ends with a number of activities designed to help bring you in contact with the faerie kingdoms. There are certainly a few spots I know of both in Somerset where I live and also Hertfordshire which certainly feel faerie-haunted to me where I shall certainly go and meditate to see what happens; not forgetting the proper etiquette of course!

The whole book is very well researched drawing upon the work of such luminaries as have been named above (and many more), as well as past authors and Fey-explorers such as A.E. and W.B. Yeats (both with a Golden Dawn heritage), W.Y. Evans-Wentz whose classic "The Fairy Faith in Celtic countries" was written before he went off gallivanting to Tibet (to write other classics) and many others. However through all this Emily Carding's work is a gossamer thread of inspiration running across all the faery realms opening up this hidden kingdom and helping anyone who hears such a calling to enter.

Threaded through with personal accounts, poetry, interviews and stunning artwork this is a book to be read, re-read and treasured forever. Very highly recommended.

Welcome to the World of the Fae

Lately the Fairy path has been calling out to many people, myself included, perhaps even more so then the Pagan Gods and Goddesses. I have read many books on fairy some have been simple and others have been complex. This book strikes a balance often times giving a through review. of what may have been read previously along with new information and insight. To explain the world of fairy the author uses the Septagram or seven pointed star as an out line. The Septagram was held sacred to the Goddess Inanna of ancient Sumeria. Along with a layout of the fairy world there are interviews with such gifted authors as John and Caitlyn Mathews, RJ Stewart, Charles De Lint and a whole bunch of others. Interviews are also given to Brian and Wendy Froud, Marc Potts, Karen Martinez and a slew of others. Singers and musicians are well represented also groups like Dolmen and SJ Tucker are interviewed often giving great insight in to the world of fairy. For those new to the fairy community there are resources for organizations and faerie festival. Alas I am jumping to the end of the book.
Top start with the beginning we must go with knowledge. Chapter one tells us several possibilities of who the fairies are. Some theories trace them back to old gods, other people posit they are aliens and the list goes on to spirits of the dead, fallen angels to expressions of the world soul. Some deities associated with faeries are Freya, Morrigan and Hekate. The first chapter also gives a thorough discussion on etiquette. Faeries hate Iron, be careful as to when you [partake of faerie food. Give them the first offering of a nhewly opened bottle of water, milk or alcoholic beverage. Leave food for them. About thanking faeries well perhaps follow through is very important. Always be honest when approaching the fae.

The other chapters include Connection, Trust, Honour, Magick, Joy and Inspiration. The book gives a thorough how to an doing rituals, finding tools and building a relationship with the faeries. At the end of the chapter there are exercises which help your spiritual advancement. They are worth doing as they help connect you to the environment and the fairy world. The book does not sell it self as a bible or a must do but rather as a gathering of tools as there is no room in spirituality for absolute authority.

For those seeking to walking the path of the fae or build a closer connection to them. I would advise reading this book. What is said there in will not conflict with any previous held beliefs. All hail the world of the fae.

Faery Craft

Faery Craft by Emily Carding is a charming book that looks into the faery realm, and the people who are drawn to it. It is a guidebook on all things faery. It isn't too focused on beginner ideas of the faery, and not too advanced for beginners to be lost on the subject. It really is a perfect balance for both beginners and advanced faery explorers to enjoy this book.

Faery Craft is the type of book on faeries that I absolutely love. It is loaded with information, art, exercises for us to try, and personal experiences. Carding writes with such passion that it really made me as a reader become involved in the book, and want to try out these exercises too.

The book is divided into brilliantly designed and outlined chapters including: knowledge, connection, trust, honour, magick, joy, inspiration, and balance. I enjoyed them all, and found the knowledge chapter to be especially interesting because the fae may not be who or what you originally thought after reading this important chapter.

This is a beautifully crafted book about faeries. It has everything I'd want out of a book about faeries including history, personal accounts, interviews, poetry, artwork, photos, and so much more. I love this book, and if you are interested in the faery kingdom, I think you will like it, too. I highly recommend it.

Great Guide to Higher Education Without Debt

Anyone from a high school senior to a career changer would benefit from reading this book. It is a definative guide on how to get financial aid and choose a course of study that leads directly to a well paying job. Of particular interest are certificate programs that can be completed in under a year and vitually guarantee employment in fields such as court reporting with salaries starting at $60,000.

The author is a community college president who knows first-hand that these institutions are an affordable alternative to getting a four year degreee and amassing more than $24,000 in debt.

Many community college graduates are now earning higher starting salaries than liberal arts majors at four year schools.

This book has the answers to the problem of college affordability and is a must for anyone considering a degree in higher education.

There's no question that the cost of college is well beyond the means of many American
families. The fact is, however, a college education continues to be the most reliable
means of establishing a career and improving one's employability and earnings
potential. It's no longer discretionary. What makes The Community College Career
Track such a worthwhile read is that it helps families bridge the gap between the need
for a college education and the need to fund it without relying on debt. This book helps
demonstrate that there is a better way, and that the community college is the key to
making high education affordable and career-relevant.

Before I read this book, I didn't know much about community colleges. What a revelation! It seems like the four-year, residential, liberal arts college experience is at odds with the realities of today's job market. Wouldn't it be great if every young person read this book before following the herd and incurring thousands of dollars in debt in the process?
