The Formation of Scholars: Rethinking Doctoral Education for the Twenty-First Century (Jossey-Bass/Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement

This groundbreaking book explores the current state of doctoral education in the United States and offers a plan for increasing the effectiveness of doctoral education. Programs must grapple with questions of purpose. The authors examine practices and elements of doctoral programs and show how they can be made more powerful by relying on principles of progressive development, integration, and collaboration. They challenge the traditional apprenticeship model and offer an alternative in which students learn while apprenticing with several faculty members. The authors persuasively argue that creating intellectual community is essential for high-quality graduate education in every department. Knowledge-centered, multigenerational communities foster the development of new ideas and encourage intellectual risk taking.

Review
The book shows how doctoral education has evolved, how graduate programs take a hard look at themselves, and the specific change practices attempted by participating departments… Together, the chapters offer guidelines for surviving and thriving as a college teacher. From the Inside Flap

The Formation of Scholars

In the fast-paced twenty-first century educational environment--with new technologies, mounting global competition for students and scholars, blurring of boundaries between traditional disciplines, and growing pressures for accountability--doctoral programs face fundamental questions of purpose, vision, and quality.

Sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, The Formation of Scholars distills the results of a five-year project to develop creative solutions and approaches for transforming doctoral programs. The authors outline the processes, tools, and opportunities through which faculty and graduate students can turn their habits and skills as scholars--their commitment to hard questions and robust evidence--on their purposes and practices as educators and learners.

From the Back Cover

Doctoral Education for Future Generations

"Improving doctoral education is the lynchpin for higher education reform, and in this spirit The Formation of Scholars was built from an unusual process in which faculty-student teams from corresponding departments in participating institutions were brought together to share experiences. The results provide new guidance toward creating teaching and research scholars who are also 'stewards of the discipline.' This book should be required reading for those who care about higher education."
—DON KENNEDY, president emeritus, Stanford University and former editor-in-chief, Science

"The strength of doctoral education in the U.S. lies in its willingness to continually reinvent itself. That reinvention hinges crucially on performance of both the faculty delivering the program of study and graduate deans who structure the right incentives and generate the right resources to ensure the highest possible quality experience for students. The Formation of Scholars provides extraordinarily rich insights into the thinking of students and faculty across six fields as they reflect on program goals, program effectiveness, and the program's capacity to reinvent itself in positive and productive ways. The CID project has made a lasting contribution to the toolbox of graduate deans as they do their part to reinvent doctoral education to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century."
—DEBRA W. STEWART, president, Council of Graduate Schools

"The ideas in The Formation of Scholars are great conversation starters with faculty and administrative colleagues involved in doctoral education. This terrific volume is delightfully written, informative, thoughtful, and thought-provoking. It will be a wonderful resource for effecting change in one of the most dynamic and important parts of the educational enterprise—preparation of the Ph.D."
—SUZANNE ORTEGA, vice provost and graduate dean, University of Washington

Rethinking Doctoral Education in the 21st Century
By Steven Peterson
The title for my review is the subtitle of this work, sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The focus of this book is to explore what it takes to form scholars from the raw material of graduate students in doctoral programs.

Tasks to be carried out to create effective scholars include the development of professional identities among students, to encourage scholarly integration (developing linkages among teaching, service, and research), development of intellectual community, a sense of stewardship (preserving the best of the past of one's discipline and looking to the future to move ahead in productive directions).

Among specific issues addressed are: What are the real purposes of the dreaded comprehensive exams (and subsidiary questions, such as can we get the result we want in a different way?); What is the purpose of the dissertation (And are there ways to make this process work better?).

One argument raised by the authors is the need to move from experience to expertise, recognizing the importance of "practice." Among means of achieving this might be: Working with multiple faculty, rather than the standard approach of one central advisor working with his/her doctoral students; Expect students to try out new ideas at professional meetings; Have students get involved in "professional service," such as serving on departmental committees, getting involved in service with the discipline; Collaborative learning (Would dissertation writing groups make sense?).

From time to time, it makes a lot of sense to revisit how we develop our next generation of doctoral students. This book identifies one approach (or set of approaches) to accomplishing that. This is not the final word, of course, but this book does provide the possibility of opening up discussion and looking at doctoral education with a fresh perspective. For that, this book is to be commended.

Formation of Scholars: A Formative Text that Fumbles on Follow-through
By Fabrication Nation
One check on the guidance contained herein and a potential (doctoral) research project to boot, is to follow-up on the 80 doctoral programs in six disciplines with whom the writers worked over the length of the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID) and on which the book is based.

Ten years after the completion of the project, would one find that the programs have continued to evolve and renew or have they reverted back to the status quo, which engendered the need for the Carnegie Initiative in the first place.

The main recommendation is that a doctoral program should undertake a process of 'ongoing renewal' by turning its research lens on themselves.

What is needed is an ongoing process for ongoing renewal otherwise virtually no renewal will occur. The five writers of the book provided the process for the 80 programs. The insights gained and contained in this book, like the discovery that the doctoral learner is a 'secret agent of change,' are great guideposts for a doctoral program undertaking renewal.

The book provides many great nuggets yet fails to complete its primary task to rethink doctoral education for the 21st Century. The advise comprises a promised land that could make doctoral education more aligned and responsive to the 21st Century, but fails to show doctoral programs how to get to the promised land without the leadership of a Carnegie Initiative.

The authors assume that their insights transfer directly to graduate education. Without the buzz of doctoral students interacting with faculty in an interdisciplinary context at a highly-anticipated CID facilitation devoted to examination of doctoral programs, how successful will individual efforts at renewal be, even with an excellent book?

The most obvious recommendation the book fails to make should call for doctoral programs with the input of doctoral students to contribute to ongoing public scholarship in doctoral education. In the forward by Lee S. Shulman, he writes that the aim of doctoral education should produce a steward of the discipline. Yet the most logical conclusion of the advice given is that a doctoral education should aim to produce a disciple of doctorate education, before concerning its self with a stewards of a discipline.

Buy it or read it forewarned that to use the ideas, a process involving students aimed at ongoing renewal needs to be put into place.
