Autobiography is the mediocre default mode of modern American poetry, yet Roberts, who has mined his dysfunctional family of origin, Catholic schooling, libidinous longings, and other personal tribulations for decades, writes outstanding autobiographical poetry by carefully conjuring the scenes, actions, and sequences of what he reports and letting those details, rather than any stated feelings about them, evoke the reader's empathy. Moreover, his poems are like IMAX films of the imagination; it takes real effort to disengage from them. The reader isn't the father trying to get more than monosyllables out of his scion in "At the Breakfast Table with My Seventeen-Year-Old Son," nor the boy trying to please mother in "Washing the Steps," nor the son recalling dead parents and a mad brother, nor the friend checking in on a much older fellow poet, nor any of the other speakers of Roberts' poems. About the Author
Len Roberts is the translator of two chapbooks and one previous full-length volume of SAndor CsoA3ri's poetry, as well as the author of eight books of his own poetry. The Silent Singer: New and Selected Poems (University of Illinois Press, 2001), is his most recent book. He has received a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for his translation work, and selection of his fourth book of poems, Black Wings, for the National Poetry Series

Has changed my perspective of poetry

Len Roberts is a poet and a story teller, yet he write in a way that readers can relate. He is one of the top poets I read and one of the first I recommend others to read. Even if you are an amateur poet/poetry reader. he is easy to understand yet displays a natural talent to grip and jog your own memory or moment of thought. Reading him makes me feel like we are one in the same and that I have known him forever. Love Len Roberts!

The Greatest Poet of Our Time

This is THE book for anyone interested in modern poetry. The author covers many subjects, his family, coping with loss, and psych. dilemmas. Dr. Roberts unfortunatly passed away just before this anthology was published.
