Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead

Action packed and captivating tale. Captain Gordon is a Tomb Raider. Hired to fly a team of American anthropologists to an arid mountain region now part of Pakistan bordering the Arabian Sea. All goes well until an ancient map is discovered in an old pottery jar, revealing the site of a vast lost treasure that Alexander the Great was bringing to Greece from his conquest of India. More than 10,000 of Alexander's soldiers and camp followers lay buried in the high desert plains along with the loot of India - hidden in a tomb never to be reclaimed. With the map's discovery, all academic pretense is dropped. Now Gordon finds himself caught in the middle of the expedition where murder replaces scholarship as the best method to uncover the valuable hoard. His colleagues have one goal now, to raid a tomb belonging to Alexander the Great at all cost.

Not only was Hubbard steeped in the history of the ancient world, he was also an avid adventurer—both in his own right and as a respected member of the famed Explorers Club.  As such, he brought a wealth of insight, experience and authenticity to all his tales of adventure.
Also includes two additional adventures: The Price of a Hat, in which the key to the Russian Czar’s life is hidden in a most unexpected place, and Starch and Stripes, the story of a U.S. Marine who sets a trap for a tropical warlord that reverberates all the way back to Washington.

“An exciting story told at a brisk clip, with characters and dialogue that keep readers glued to the page: Hubbard at his best.” —Booklist

Review
"The three stories reprinted in this volume are solid examples of what passed for thrilling adventures (not coincidentally the name of the pulp fiction magazine in which two of them appeared) in the pre–Indiana Jones days. In the title tale, an expedition to the Pakistan desert to locate the lost loot of Alexander the Great erupts in murder and mayhem when greed gets the better of its members. “Price of a Hat,” set in revolutionary Russia, concerns a Cossack hat that carries a secret so significant a dozen people die trying to acquire it. “Starch and Stripes” tells of a Marine officer at a Caribbean outpost whose scheme to apprehend a wily bandit is nearly undone by corps bureaucracy. Though minimally plotted and matter-of-factly narrated, all three stories have the action, violence, and derring-do that made pulp fiction the escapist entertainment of its day." —Publishers Weekly

"The title story in this trio of Hubbard's pulp fiction (all of them published in 1936) has a very strong Indiana Jones feel to it, even though it predates Indy by nearly five decades....an exciting story, told at a brisk clip, with characters and dialogue that keep readers glued to the page: Hubbard at his best."—Booklist

This exciting style of production can really bring an audiobook to life, and makes you feel like you’re right there in the middle of the action. L. Ron Hubbard does adventure stories as well as anyone I have read. Don’t miss these three thrilling tales." —Audiobook Heaven

“Hubbard’s trio offer vintage action, adventure, and romance….These full-cast productions quickly become addictive. Their brevity also makes for perfect commuter fare. Anyone who enjoys hard-boiled pulp writing or old-time radio will be rewarded.”—Library Journal

"...stories have the action, violence, and derring-do that made pulp fiction the escapist entertainment of its day.”—Publishers Weekly

“The excellent narrators, sound effects, and music will have listeners imagining themselves traveling the globe in search of adventures.”—AudioFile

“As with any well written story these stories will sweep you away and take you to these lands and leave you on the edge of your seat the whole way. This is especially true if you give the audiobooks a listen.”—Gil Wilson, Gil-T Pleasures Blog

Far Flung adventures from the pulps
By Gil Wilson
Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead"
by L. Ron Hubbard
Multi-cast performance
produced by Galaxy Audio
approx 2 hours

It's time once again to go on a far flung adventure with L. Ron Hubbard and stories from the Golden Age. In the middle of the 20th century Hubbard wrote numerous stories that were published in the various pulp fiction magazines of the time. He wrote science-fiction, fantasy, westerns, war stories and sea & air adventures, and adventures from afar. This time around Galaxy Audio/Galaxy Press have put together their own Hubbard pulp fiction/audio pulp fiction that covers the world from the Arabian sea to Russia to the West Indies.

As with any well written story these stories will sweep you away and take you to these lands and leave you on the edge of your seat the whole way. This is especially true if you give the audiobooks a listen. The audiobooks are produced with excellent voice acting consisting of a great cast of voices, great sound effects that will create the theatre of the mind that was well known to those that listened to the old radio shows that used to be broadcast around the same time these stories were originally published, and the incidental music really gives you a feeling that you are on these journeys around the world.

This publishing contains three short stories;

"Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead," originally published in October, 1936 tells of a search for the lost treasures of Baluchistan, an arid mountain region now part of Pakistan bordering the Arabian Sea, which leads to an ancient tomb, murder, and the obliteration of an entire expedition. Told in the first person by the pilot of the expedition, Captain Gordon, the only man to escape alive.

Gordon is hired to fly a team of American anthropologists to the area and all goes well until an ancient map is discovered in an old pottery jar, revealing the site of a vast treasure that Alexander the Great was bringing to Greece from his conquest of India. At this point Gordon is discovered over the body of one of the anthropologists who has just been murdered. Gordon is not trusted by the leaders of the expedition and is forced to stay behind with the local guide while the rest follow the map. Gordon and the guide find the tomb where more than 10,000 of Alexander's soldiers and camp followers lay buried in the high desert plains along with the loot of India--hidden in a tomb never to be reclaimed. Gordon must then fight for his life to escape with or without the treasure.

"The Price of a Hat," originally published March, 1936 tells of a A fur hat, a Kubanka, with a secret message stitched into its hatband costs the lives of six men in a belated effort to save the lives of Nicholas II, the last Russian Czar, and his family.

"Starch and Stripes," originally published January, 1936 is a story that has a bit of humor at the expense of the Marine Corps brass. A marine captain is trying to ensnare a dangerous rebel leader, but just when the Marines are closing in on the villain, top brass and U.S. senators decide to inspect the base and decide on future funding for the marines.

Some great adventures to be had in this release from Galaxy Press.

Three Tales of Adventure
By Coffee Addicted Writer (Billy)
I've never listened to an audiobook until I started reviewing the Stories from the Golden Age from Galaxy Press. Each audiobook is based on the short stories by the late author L. Ron Hubbard, consisting of one or more great adventure tales that were written back in the 1930s and 1940s, or otherwise known as the Golden Years when these types of stories were published in Pulp fiction magazines. Galaxy Press has been kind of enough to send me a free copy of the award-winning Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead in exchange for my honest review.

Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead was originally published in the October 1936 issue of Thrilling Adventures and it takes place in Pakistan where a pilot Captain Gordon has been hired to fly a team of American anthropologists to the arid mountain region. The excitement begins when they discover an ancient map inside an old pottery jar. The map is supposed to lead you to the lost treasures of Baluchistan that Alexander the Great was bringing from India to Greece. Legend has it that his 10,000 soldiers' remains lay buried in the dessert near the tomb that hides the treasure. The anthropologists want the treasure for themselves. They will even murder someone for it. Now, Gordon is stuck in an unwanted expedition, where he will fight to save his life.

This audiobook contains two more stories, Price of a Hat and Starch and Stripes.

Price of a Hat originally appeared in print in March 1936, where Stewart tells his fellow card friends how he acquired the fur hat Kubanka. The story takes him back to Russia where he explains how the Kubanka cost the lives of six men.

Starch and Stripes was published in January 1936, and is about Captain Eddie Edwards who is gets the sudden news that the senator and a general will be inspecting his Marine Corps. He quickly brings in his men from the field for the inspection, but he breaks his own orders by going after a local bandit that just may cost him his life.

I listened to Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead a few days ago when I was stuck inside the house because of the snow storm. After a few minutes, I could easily understand why it won the Earphones Award, as the voice cast is wonderful and the sound effects are amazing. The main story, Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead, feels like a combination of The Mummy and Indiana Jones. Price of the Hat starts out slow, but left a surprising twist at the end. I was surprised to find a bit of humor in Starch and Stripes, which turned out to be my favorite from this release. Overall, I more than enjoyed listening to Tomb of Ten Thousand Dead and I recommend it to everyone.

The Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead by L. Ron Hubbard – Review

The Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead by L. Ron Hubbard – Review

I had a chance to review “The Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead” by L. Ron Hubbard. It starts off when explorer Gordon is hired to research a dig site for ancient treasures in a tomb located in a desert. While on this adventure, Gordon finds more than treasure on this archeological adventure, he finds that he has to fight for his life as well. The Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead brings you right into the action of the story, which I really enjoyed from the beginning.

I personally really enjoy history and stories that blend into historical archives. The idea of this site not being unearthed since the time of Alexander the Great really sparked my interest. If you like adventure, action and history, then this story might be for you. I encourage my adventurous readers out there to give “The Tomb of the Ten Thousand Dead by L. Ron Hubbard” a chance and embark on an adventure.
