About the Author
William C. Edwards is a business analyst who spent years meticulously transcribing the documents surrounding the Lincoln assassination trial. Edward Steers Jr. is the author or editor of numerous books about Lincoln and his assassination, including Blood on the Moon: The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln and The Trial: The Assassination of President Lincoln and the Trial of the Conspirators. He is a retired research scientist with the National Institute of Health.

Certainly not for everybody, but a great resource

Both in terms of price and content, "The Lincoln Assassination: The Evidence" is not a book for the general, casual reader. It is an enormous compilation of material from US Government files collected in the aftermath of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln: raw, undigested material both highly pertinent and utterly irrelevant. There are interrogation records, letters from ordinary citizens (and crackpots), detective reports, old letters from and to various suspects ... It is a great resource for serious students of the Assassination, and also provides many hours of happy browsing to capture the flavor of the times. In no way does this book provide a complete history of the Lincoln Assassination, but any future history of the Assassination must take into account this treasure trove of primary source material.

Unfiltered Voices from the Past

Many of the books about the Lincoln assassination are rehashes of earlier works but this is the the real deal--verified transcriptions of the actual documents created at the time of the assassination. This is not light reading, doesn't have a narrative thread and yet the letters and depositions have an immediacy and level of detail that give voice to those who lived through this national nightmare. Even the best researched and written contemporary histories impose their points of view or interpretations but as a collection of primary sources, this does not and lets the reader draw his/her own conclusion. A treasure trove for researchers, authors of historical fiction as well as historians, and anyone interested in Lincoln's assassination as we approach its 150th anniversary.
