The Cossack Myth: History and Nationhood in the Age of Empires (New Studies in European History), by Serhii Plokhy

In the years following the Napoleonic Wars, a mysterious manuscript began to circulate among the dissatisfied noble elite of the Russian Empire. Entitled The History of the Rus', it became one of the most influential historical texts of the modern era. Attributed to an eighteenth-century Orthodox archbishop, it described the heroic struggles of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Alexander Pushkin read the book as a manifestation of Russian national spirit, but Taras Shevchenko interpreted it as a quest for Ukrainian national liberation, and it would inspire thousands of Ukrainians to fight for the freedom of their homeland. Serhii Plokhy tells the fascinating story of the text's discovery and dissemination, unravelling the mystery of its authorship and tracing its subsequent impact on Russian and Ukrainian historical and literary imagination. In so doing he brilliantly illuminates the relationship between history, myth, empire and nationhood from Napoleonic times to the fall of the Soviet Union.

Review
"With its impressive source base, deep analysis, and thoughtful integration into comparative studies of empire, this book offers valuable insights for historians of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union, as well as scholars interested in Ukrainian history and culture, eastern European historiography and comparative studies of empire."
Rebecca Mitchell, Canadian Journal of History

"Serhii Plohky has written one of the most important and captivating monographs on modern Ukrainian history and the Ukrainian-Russian relationship to come out in recent years. For the general reader, the tome is cast as a fascinating search for clues that begins with numerous theories on the authorship, time of composition and purpose of the 'History' before Plohky elegantly lays out his own theories by taking the reader through the steps by which he came to his views."
Frank Sysyn, The Russian Review

Deep and dense
By Jeffrey Huntington
The core of this book is a literary "whodunit:" Who actually wrote the anonymous books from two hundred and more years ago which are seminal to the image and self-image of Ukraine, such as "History of the Rus," "Brief Description of Little Russia," "The Tale of Igor's Campaign," "A Chronicle of Little Russia," and "The Hustynia Chronicle?" In the course of minutely examining each candidate, Plokhy takes us into some back alleys of history where even the google search engine has never been. Ultimately, the question of authorship remains a matter of opinion, but this book has much to say about the sense of national identity of Ukrainians and Russians, an issue so explosive in 2014 that it is taking us to the brink of nuclear war.

This is a scholarly book (as you would expect), minutely documented and reasonably objective, though the author's sympathies lie obviously with Ukraine. Few laypersons could read this for fun. The apocryphal epics themselves are a mixture of myth, polemic and fact, but that is the way people think, and these are important clues to what is politically possible today. Quite a few people need to read this book, and I would hope that a new printing could bring the price down to where those who need it can afford it.

Multi-faceted discussion of the work that launched the Ukrainian Nation
By Michael Burianyk
The "History of the Rus" was an anonymous historical manuscript that appeared in the Ukrainian part of the Russian Empire in the early 19th century. Despite its lack of accuracy, the book has had a long and deeply influential affect on Ukrainians - as well as Russians. That influence has also changed with the times - its meaning morphing as did Ukrainian society. It may be an exaggeration to say that it launched the Ukrainian nation, but in many ways "History of the Rus" did contribute to the creation the Ukrainian national ideal and to its myths - myths that any country, any nation, needs to survive.

There have been many attempts over the, almost two centuries, to discover the author of "History of the Rus", but with little success. Serhii Plokhy tries again and does a good job, if not exactly positively identifying the culprit, in narrowing the field considerably.

Prof. Plokhy's book has multiple virtues. While mainly arguing about the authorship, he does go into detail of the sources, the meaning and the influence of "History". I long wondered, for instance, where the inspiration (and 'facts') for Hohol's "Taras Bulba" and Shevchenko's Cossack themed poetry came from. While all that is interesting enough, I particularly appreciated and enjoyed the descriptions of Ukrainian Cossack society of the 18-19th centuries and the stories of the lives of the various 'culprits' and their families and acquaintances.

While an academic work, I do really think that "The Cossack Myth" is accessible to anyone with an interest in Ukrainian, or even Russian, history. As with many of Prof. Plokhy's publications, this book helps to illuminate the way that Ukrainians think of themselves as a nation and to explain contemporary events.
