A new look at an old city...

Coming from the Northeast United States, I've lived in the Kansas City suburbs for the past 12 years. I've come to discover Kansas City on my own terms. I'm not really a short story fan, but Steve Paul, editor, presents Kansas City on his terms with the help of 15 contributors. Kansas City Noir, has all the stylish Hollywood crime drama with large doses of Hitchcock and Outer Limits.
The book is divided into three sections, "Heartland," "Crazy Little Women," and "Smoke & Mirrors" covering `bad boys' and `bad girls'. Each story is complete with great detailed character development, complete story plots, and seamy Kansas City style quirky and unpredictable endings. But in defense of Kansas City, I think most cities could have seamy ending stories. However, it's only in Kansas City that you will find blues, jazz at 18th and Vine, bar-b-que featuring Gates, Arthur Bryant's, Fiorella's Jack Stack, sports bars and crazy sports fanatics (Chiefs and Royals) tightly wound into a Midwest mode. But this collection of stories with its serial killers, police detectives, barkeeps, classic movie theaters goers, and other low life, not only touch upon violence, but also tap into human values although at times a little twisted. A fine collection, I look forward to reading more "Noir" editions.

Every story is not just good but excellent in Kansas City Noir

If you are not a short story reader this is an excellent collection to introduce you to the fine art of the short story. If you live in Kansas City you will savor this tasty literary morsels that aren't overly literary but original and riveting. I was extremely impressed with this collection and hope there will be a second edition. You will not be disappointed if you buy this book.

A Raw Noir of Crazy Bright Insanity and Dark Blues and Barbeque

The cover says it all - a polished Packard in the dim glow of city lights - Kansas City Noir is a classic fusion of film, music and food as true in the 40s as it is today. Set at the crossroads of the country, Kansas City is a jumping off place, and a nexus that draws you inexorably into its guts. Kansas City is a raw noir of crazy bright insanity and dark blues and barbeque.
There's three sections to the work: Heartland, Crazy Little Women and Smoke and Mirrors - I loved them all. It's hard to choose standouts, but I can't help but call out the absolute grief of Rodriguez's Good Neighbor and John Lutz's absolutely nutcase Thelma and Laverne (and Henry too). Last Night at the Rialto by Mitch Bryan is a wonderful tale of nostalgia and revenge and Charlie Price's Last Supper by Nadia Pflaum is spectacularly evil. I read Matthew Eck's The Softest Crime twice, a painful embodiment of fathers' sins visited upon their children.
Steve Paul, you've invited remarkable writers to write their Kansas City stories - thank you! and thanks too to Akashic for keeping them coming.
