The Road to Cardinal Valley (Berkley Prime Crime), by Earlene Fowler

In this heartwarming follow-up to Earlene Fowler’s national bestseller, The Saddlemaker’s Wife, Ruby McGavin returns to the small town of Cardinal, California, where a year ago she brought her husband’s ashes back to his family’s ranch, and discovered safety, peace, and love...

Back in Cardinal, Ruby is hoping the place and people who gave her so much can give her brother, Nash—who’s been drowning in drink in Nashville—the fresh start he so desperately needs.

Saddlemaker Lucas McGavin is thrilled that Ruby is back. He hasn’t given up on his love for her, despite the awkward fact that she’s his brother’s widow—and that this may be his last chance to win Ruby’s heart.

When Nash starts drinking again and has a devastating accident, Ruby seeks out their estranged mother to help with an intervention, not realizing that Etta Walker harbors a horrible secret that keeps her from reconnecting with the children she deserted so many years ago.

As Ruby, Lucas, and Etta struggle with the present and confront the past, they each learn the power of forgiveness…and reach for a new future filled with hope, grace, and love.

From Booklist
Hoping to remove her troubled, alcoholic brother, Nash, from the temptations of Nashville, widowed Ruby returns with him to friendly, small-town Cardinal, California, hoping for a new start. She soon settles in, with the help of her former husband Cole’s relatives, especially Cole’s aunt and his brother, Lucas, who has developed romantic feelings for Ruby. Nash doesn’t feel comfortable in Cardinal, however, and begins drinking again. Ruby has been bitter since she and Nash were abandoned as children by their mother, Etta, but when Nash gets into deep trouble, Ruby reunites with Etta to help him. Ultimately, Ruby finds acceptance, love, and forgiveness as well as the importance of friends and family. Like The Saddlemaker’s Wife (2006), this sequel, populated by a cast of well-developed, sympathetic characters, is less about mystery and suspense and more about the details of life in a small-town ranching community. --Sue OBrien

Review
Praise for Earlene Fowler’s National Bestseller, The Saddlemaker’s Wife

“[A] sweetly told narrative… [Fowler’s] well-observed cowboys and cattle farmers have colorful quirks and stiff backbones.”—Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review

“A heartfelt story steeped in the beauty and mystery of California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains.”—Lisa Wingate, author of Blue Moon Bay

“[A] poignant tale of a family fractured by the secrets of the past…Fowler, with her gift for drawing painfully real and credible characters, takes the reader along on an emotionally powerful ride.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

About the Author
Earlene Fowler was raised in La Puente, California, by a Southern mother and a Western father. She lives in Southern California with her husband, Allen, and a semi-obedient Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Boudin.

Satisfying
By Nickolina
I pre-ordered the hardback...then changed the order to Kindle when it became available. And I am glad I did, because I ended up re-reading parts of this under the covers to keep the light from waking up my husband! It came out on a day that was busy for me so I had to read it in chunks, which I don't like much so I read the last part to know how it ended, then could control myself and read the story. Bad, I know, but I wanted to know what happened with Ruby & Lucas. And it is very satisfying, but no spoilers here.

I really hope Earlene keeps this series going. I like the Benni Harper books, and I enjoyed "Love Mercy" & "The Saddlemaker's Wife" (which is the first Cardinal book). Her characters live real lives and share that life with you.

If I get some money to spend on frivolity I might get the hardback anyway, just because I have a lot of Earlene Fowler books on my shelf, both hardback & paperback. But the Kindle versions make it easy to read them, and that's the best part.

A Must Read Author Produces Another Winner
By Elaine M. Panzeter
I have been reading books by Earlene Fowler for years and could not wait for her latest release. It came out yesterday and I had it pre-ordered to arrive on my kindle. I was not surprised that I stayed up very late last evening to read it. It was again awesome. Earlene can take every day characters and convey their thoughts and emotions like no one else. The town of Cardinal seems so real and the situations so believeable that it feels like you are right there while reading the book. Ms. Fowler should be a much wider known author as she really can tell a story. I hated to see the book end and wish to see more of her work in the future.

Wonderful!!
By Love2Read
The Saddlemaker's Wife is one of my favorite books, and this follow up is as good as the first. The characters are flawed but endearing. The smal town life feels real. Earlene Fowler's writing transports you into the lives of characters and their emotions. I'm not ashamed to say: I cried! I laughed!
