I stopped and let them circle me, first because it was intriguing and, second, because, honestly, what could they do? Only knives, but all armed, and that made them even more interesting. Interesting. Fun.

Playtime…

Taking on bloodthirsty supernatural monsters is how Caliban and Niko Leandros make a living. But years ago—before they became a force to be reckoned with—the brothers were almost victims of a very human serial killer.

Almost.

Unfortunately for them, that particular depraved killer was working as apprentice to a creature far more malevolent—the legendary Spring-heeled Jack. He’s just hit town. He hasn’t forgotten what the Leandros brothers did to his murderous protégé. He hasn’t forgotten what they owe him.

And now they are going to pay…and pay…and pay.…

A Favorite Author, never disppoints.
By N. Gargano
I was so excited to start this book, I adore Rob Thurman, and I know I am always in for an entertaining read when I read one of her books. Although I read them again and again, I always look forward to a new one.
This one does not disappoint.
First of all, I love the different points of view, Niko and Cal sharing the narration. The first book she did that for, Deathwish, was always one of my favorites of this series, so I was thrilled to see it again. The story not only goes back and forth between the two narrators, it also goes back and forth between two time lines. I really like the stories of the past, all the books have a couple of snippets or stories about the past, but this one really delves into a past timeline, and it adds so much to the history of the characters. So great.....
I don't want to say too much, no spoilers, but there are a couple of twists and turns that are surprising. And if you read the Trickster novels, it goes full circle in one part of the book. By the way, if you have not read the Trickster novels, you must. They are fun as well.
So I will read this one again, like I do all the others, but I must say, this is one of the best.

Fantastic! Marveous! Wonderful! (Except for the Copyediting)
By Michelle K
I love and adore this series--anything Rob Thurman has written, really--but this series especially is a favorite and one where I pre-order each book and devour it as soon as it arrives. (I understand the business reasons for early in the week publication dates, but they're bad for compulsive readers who have to work and get up in the morning to support their reading habit.)

This story is told in two times and two points of view. It begins (and alternates) in the past, with Niko's point of view. Niko is 15, Cal is 11, and Cal has decided they are living next door to a serial killer.

Then we switch to the current timeline and Cal's point of view, where a paien (monster, supernatural, creature, etc) serial killer is targeting humans. Cal is asked to look into the problem, but refuses, until events are taken out of his hands.

So far, so good. We have all my favorite elements, especially the relationship between Cal and Niko, and how they will--literally--do absolutely anything for each other. They save each other, in the physical and emotional sense, time and again, and spending time reading about them always makes me feel better, no matter how many monsters appear.

The problem I had with this story is that I came across multiple copy-editing issues that would--quite literally--throw me out of the story. I'd be happily reading along when suddenly I'd come across a sentence I'd have to re-read three or four times to make sense of it.

Let me be clear, it was being thrown out of the story was that irked me. Having to return to the mundane world where Niko and Cal don't exist to figure out what was happening before I could dive back into their world. That's what knocked the rating down for me.

Leaving that aside, the story was fantastic, and I appreciated both Cal's revelations (and acceptance!) halfway through the story as well as The Big Reveal at the end of the story. Marvelous!

If you haven't read the series, you should be able to start here, because the shifts in time and point of view give you plenty of back story between the characters. Though I think reading from the beginning makes it even better.

Great book!
By S, Campbell
This is a wonderful new addition to the series. I love the alternating points of view in the past/present, you learn a lot about the brothers and little Cal is hilarious. Lots of action, humour, some interesting backstory and a very creepy bad guy. If you're a fan of the Leandros brothers this book can't be missed.
