DALE E. BASYE has been a journalist, film critic, and publisher of an arts and entertainment newspaper. He lives with his wife and son in Portland, Oregon.

close calls bring so much adventure

I have the first Heck book and I didn't even know there were a total of six of them! I am in shock and so super excited to go back now and read them all!
"So life is like shampoo and death is the conditioner." Marlo whispered to the girl next to her.
Milton and Marlo are still up to no good and this time it lands them at Precocia, the circle of Heck where they send kids, just like them, who have grown up too fast. In Precocia, they are expected to dress, talk, and act like little grown-ups and their vice principals, Napoleon and Cleopatra (not joking) would see childhood totally gone anyways. The kids just have to find a way to escape and not drown or get eaten by the giant squid underneath Precocia. Once out, where will they go and what will they do?
I don't want to give too much away about this book because everything that Milton and Marlo do is what keeps you reading. Their adventures together and close calls bring so much adventure and this book truly is really hard to put down.

Where the Smartypants Kids Go

At first I was of two minds as I read this entry in the Heck series as the author really went out on a limb and played out a plot involving alternate realities. It made a good story in and of itself but I kept wondering what the heck (heehee) this had to do with the overall plot of the series and why we weren't in Heck anymore. But Dale E. Basye manages to seamlessly bring it all together at the end; he had his fun with a wild plot and in the grand scheme it makes sense and takes the reader on a great adventure keeping the series fresh and exciting. Remember this is the author who inserted *himself* into two of the books brilliantly! Not anybody could pull that off and I've come to respect Basye as an author who knows how to write a series that the reader never knows what is going to happen next. I love the title of the next book, "Wise Acres', and am thrilled to see it will be published at the end of this year (2013). Yeah!

The Good News

The good news is that the next book is due out later this year. I read the first five in the series all sort of at one time, so it's not easy waiting out the next ones. Of course, the Fausters, Milton and Marlowe, no I'm not kidding about the names, get sent to the place where kids who grow up to fast go after they die. Milton has died twice, of course, but that doesn't make the afterlife any easier. We see very little of Principal Bubb in this book, which is okay, since she's not all that nice to be around anyway. Read this one now, but take your time. The next book, entitled, uh, never mind what it's titled now that I think about it, won't be out until near the end of the year, and you don't want to be deprived any longer than absolutely necessary!
