Dine and Die on the Danube Express (The Gourmet Detective Mysteries Book 8), by Peter King

On a voyage from another era, the detective encounters a thoroughly modern murder
The Danube Express was once the most famous train on the continent. Linking east and west, it was the fastest route from the Alps to the Black Sea, until airplanes and automobiles made it obsolete. When a group of savvy investors revived it in the 1970s, it became an Express only in name. A five-star hotel on wheels, it is now a luxurious icon—and it’s celebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary. Some of the most glamorous figures in the world have booked passage on this historic trip, and riding among them is London’s gourmet detective, who has come to sample the Danube’s famous cooking. But when a Hungarian actress disappears from the train, it turns out to be more than a publicity stunt. Soon it is clear that a killer lurks on the Danube Express, and plans on taking it all the way to the end of the line.

From Publishers Weekly
King (Eat, Drink and Be Buried, etc.) delivers mixed results in the seventh outing for his Gourmet Detective, this time aboard a luxury train. The journey begins in Munich, winds its way through the Alps, with stops in Austria, Hungary and the former Yugoslavia, the final destination being the Black Sea coast of Romania. The passengers sample the best of each locale's cuisine, while the Gourmet Detective observes the workings of the high-class excursion. Before long his reputation as an amateur sleuth, albeit one who's worked with the pros of Scotland Yard, gets him involved in the disappearance of a glamorous Hungarian actress. Has she been abducted from the train? Has she been murdered? Or is it some bizarre publicity stunt? Then a body turns up and things get even stranger. As the Gourmet Detective and the head of security work to stop the killer from striking again, the train moves forward more smoothly than the plot. An engaging travelogue and the good food, evoked in the attractive jacket art, compensate only partly for stilted prose and an unconvincing mystery that feels grafted on. Comparisons to Agatha Christie's classic Murder on the Orient Express are inevitable, but King's novel limps along a distant second.

Encapsulated luxury
By Verna Suit
The allure of this book is the allure of train travel in a bygone era: clickety-clacking through the world in encapsulated luxury. I enjoyed vicariously watching the sights and cities of Europe pass by my window while being wined and dined and not gaining an ounce. A few things, however, I found hard to swallow: the kitchen's ability and willingness to offer passengers a wide choice of dishes for each meal, for one; and the train's alleged high-tech features that did away with any track noise or sense of movement whatsoever. Also the size and appointments of the cabins. These details were tip-offs that the Danube Express was purely a fictional train. I also wasn't convinced by the narrator being asked to participate in the investigation on the basis of having once "worked with Scotland Yard."

But Peter King gets points for making what appear to be red herrings actually keys to the mystery's solution. And he has a real cliffhanger of a climax. Still, the rewards of this book are like the rewards of luxury train travel itself: It's the trip, not the destination.

Light and Pleasant Reading
By drkhimxz
Other reviewers, as well as the editorial one, have delineated the setting and plot structure of the book. An anniversary special train, gourmet cooking, wonderful scenery, ancient cities, a distinguished group of travelers, and murder. I've not previously read anything by this author but he appears to be a competent professional, although not in the highest stratum in the detective genre. Notwithstanding that fact, this book has some of the allure of travel on (one would assume) a very expensive, very desirable show train. The amateur detective is a comfortable sort of guy, an expert on wine and foodstuffs, apparently a congenial companion, and, certainly, not a rough and tumble fighter nor an intellectual snob. He does meet some beautiful women but there is no suggestion of his bedding any of them. His forte, and the role to which the Professional who has solicited his aid assigns him, is simply talking to other travelers and sharing any information acquired with the official. There are some moments of physical action and danger but that is by way of creating some excitement in what is basically a novel of talk.
Over-all, I found it a pleasant traveling companion, sufficiently involving to justify the trip one takes, not, however, a vehicle for those desiring intense suspense nor elements of real danger. There is little complexity of character nor great stress for anyone involved save for the necessary victims and killer.

dining with Gourmet Detective
By A Customer
The Gourmet Detective expects a luxurious trip including a gourmet meal as he rides the Danube Express on its twentieth fifth anniversary tour of Eastern Europe. He just sits down at the table ready to feast on the seven-course first evening dinner when security supervisor Karl Kramer asks for his help.
The Budapest Times reports that renowned passenger Hungarian stage star Magda Malescu is dead in her compartment. There is no body yet Magda is missing and the compartment smells of bitter almonds. The Gourmet Detective wonders how the reporter learned about the alleged death almost in a quantum physics way before the event occurred. Not even fully certain that the victim is dead The Gourmet Detective soon uncovers a wealth of suspects until the corpse reappears breathing quite nicely. However, murder occurs as someone kills Magda's understudy and a journalist. Karl and the Gourmet Detective wonder if the vanishing act and homicides are a diversion from an attempt to steal a valuable Mozart manuscript or improved grapevines found in baggage.
This novel needs to carry a warning label for anyone who is on the slightest health regimen as this tale abounds with good food and drink to the delight of the gourmand reader. Though fun, the mystery seems like eating rabbit diet food compared with the menu of dining palette that obviously clogs the blood system of the Gourmet Detective and the reader.
