About the Author
Neil Astley is editor of Bloodaxe Books, which he founded in 1978. His books include novels, poetry collections and anthologies, most notably the Bloodaxe Staying Alive trilogy: Staying Alive (2002), Being Alive (2004) and Being Human (2011), and now Essential poems from the Staying Alive trilogy (2011). His other anthologies include Passionfood, Do Not Go Gentle, Earth Shattering: ecopoems, Soul Food [with Pamela Robertson-Pearce] and the DVD-book In Person: 30 Poets filmed by Pamela Robertson-Pearce. He has published two novels, The End of My Tether, which was shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award, and The Sheep Who Changed the World. He received an Eric Gregory Award for his poetry and was given a D.Litt from Newcastle University for his work with Bloodaxe Books. He lives in Northumberland.

what a great book! exquisite collection of memorable poems. contains some of the best contemporary work of this century. A bit expensive and hard to find but worth it.

Disappointing selection which doesn't live up to the originals

I am utterly devoted to Neil Astley's poetry anthology 'Staying Alive' and have bought the 2 sequels though not read them much because of business and other reading materials. I was overjoyed that a kindle version of this trilogy was finally available but it has not inspired me. My review may be unfair because I haven't even read the whole kindle book but that is because it doesn't lead me on. When I pick up one of the 3 hard copies and start reading I can't stop. One poem after the other leads me further and further into the book. I have not had this experience with the 'Essential poems.'I find the selection strange but that is probably because of my taste. However, as I have said, I have not had this problem with the original 3 books.
