Misses excellence on a very important topic

This was a story that needed to be told -- better. The author veers from academic research to dry analysis to anecdotal storytelling to angry screed. Her geographical research area was so limited and the number of people she consulted so small that I did not get a good overview of the lives and challenges of gays in the south. Though there is much of value here, I nevertheless came away disappointed.

Of interest for both academics and the lay reader

Bernadette Barton's Pray the Gay Away provides rare interviews with gay and lesbian Kentuckians about their coming out experiences in a region heavily influenced by conservative, evangelical Christianity. The book offers something for both academics and lay readers alike. As a social scientist/academic, I found this book valuable for both the interviewees' stories of their often difficult -even horrific- coming out experiences and the insights of Dr. Barton who lives and teaches in rural Kentucky. I came away from reading this book with a fresh insight that even for GLBT Southerners who have positive coming out experiences, almost always these interactions with heterosexual family, friends, and public settings take place within the context of heavy conservative religious values and near constant public rhetoric debating homosexuality in the media. It was interesting to see how these interactions play out when condemnation of homosexuality and the desire to welcome and be polite to church guests interact in Barton's visit to a non-traditional evangelical mega-church. Barton also points out that a number of the horrible reactions of straight parents to their gay children become better over time. It would be interesting to see a follow-up book following the lives of the interviewees now and their family members who reacted with extreme actions such as exorcism, suicide, and cutting off their children.

A compelling and enlightening read

I think anyone who lives in a predominantly Christian country and cares about the LGBTQ community can relate to many elements of Bernadette Barton's book Pray the Gay Away: The Extraordinary Lives of Bible Belt Gays, in that we have some experience with homophobia and some of that homophobia is religious-based, often from Christian groups. Certainly not all homophobes are Christian and not all Christians are homophobic, but in the Venn diagram of Christianity and homophobia there's certainly some overlap. And that overlap is probably greatest in certain parts of the Southern and MidWestern United States known as the Bible Belt.
Barton paints a picture of the Bible Belt as a place that, while by no means exclusively populated by people who hate gays (she and her partner live there and have had mostly positive experiences), it does have a culture that promotes religious based discrimination. With religious messaging everywhere--not just in churches but at grocery stores, in schools, on bumper stickers, even in backyards and certainly at the dinner table--many LGBTQ people in the Bible Belt have learned to look for the "hidden homophobia" wherever Christian messages are found. The people she interviews in the book talk about feeling nervous whenever they see someone wearing a cross necklace or with a Jesus fish bumper sticker, worrying that it may not be safe to be openly gay around people who are openly Christian (even if the person never mentions homosexuality). With "God Hates Gays" (or much worse) being proclaimed in many churches, it may be a reasonable fear.
The thing that struck me most about Pray the Gay Away wasn't just the level of homophobia and discrimination that many people experience in the Bible Belt, such as the condemnation of ministers who think that gay people are going to hell or the counsellors who try to get people to "pray the gay away." What struck me was the sheer level of courage it takes for many LGBTQ people to come out of the closet in the Bible Belt. They may face rejection (or in some cases violent rejection) from their families who believe that being gay is unacceptable because it goes against God, but that rejection may be echoed from their entire communities--their church, their neighbours, their friends, their place of work--and they can end up being ostracized by everyone they know. She shares the stories of many people who have lived in such fear and despair of this scenario that they've tortured themselves trying to rid themselves of their own sexual desires so that they don't have to give up everything and everyone they know in order to pursue an openly gay life. And, as she points out, many people raised in an environment that values biblical adherence above all things and interprets homosexuality as against God's will have spent their whole lives internalizing these ideals and believe themselves to be hopelessly sinful just for being who they are.
It's an enlightening read. I feel like I really learned a lot about the fundamentalist groups that I see on TV shouting about gay marriage, and the people who are most affected by them.
